The X-Men movie franchise is a peculiar beast. Even as the continuity linking these films becomes increasingly labyrinthine and downright nonsensical, their actual quality has increased dramatically in recent years. X-Men: First Class may not have been the total reboot the franchise needed in 2011, but it was still a welcome change of pace that made the most of its retro setting and new cast. 2013's The Wolverine had its problems (mostly stemming from a goofy final act), but compared to its predecessor (2009's disastrous X-Men Origins: Wolverine) it was practically Citizen Kane.
