Xbox One's backwards compatibility feature was one of the biggest surprises to come out of E3—so naturally, when I finally got back to the office after the show, I wanted to test it out.

To my surprise, it works exactly as described. (That's not a dig at Microsoft—I'm just accustomed to pre-release software that tends to be, well...pre-release software.) After logging into an account with Preview Program access, I popped a Mass Effect disc into my Xbox One and immediately got a prompt to download a roughly 7GB file. A little less than 10 minutes later, the Xbox 360 startup screen flashed across my TV; the Mass Effect main menu followed shortly after. My screen did black out between the boot animation’s fade-out and the BioWare logo’s appearance, but we are still in a Preview phase of this feature, so it's possible that may not be the final experience. I repeated the experiment with Viva Piñata, and that went smoothly as well.
