Maybe you should try a different Kanthal supplier. Make sure they're reputable so that you're assured that you get properly prepared A1.
Let me rephrase what i said, using a conductive wire of the same gauge as kanthal will require a lot more wraps in order to reach the same resistance, which will cause it to heat up much slower, which will require you to raise your wattage in order for it to function properly. No, you'll need a lower voltage - and a higher amp rating for your mod. The power stays the same.
The problem with wire that isn't designed to be heating wire is how well it fares at higher temperature. And also whether it'll oxydize at the post connections, which will break the circuit.
This^^I always buy Tempco wire from ebay from Tempco - it's annealed already, and I've never had a taste from it!
I use titanium wire every chance I get. I bought my grade 1 ti wire online from a place called Etsy. I bought what is 24 gauge and 30 gauge, but they measure it in mm. I only use the 24 gauge, the 30 gauge I havent had luck with. The same diameter and number of coils in 28 gauge kanthal is approx 0.9 ohms and in 24 gauge ti is approx 0.3 ohms. So it may not be for everyone. I build to .3-.4 ohm coils on kayfuns that are drilled and dremeled out and it's all I need,,, most times,,,
This^^
I ONLY buy my wire from Temco. Great pricing, and definitely legit wire for sure.
I don't 'anneal' my wire per se, but I do pulse the shit out of my coils before wicking
Iv'e heard of some guys over here, trying titanium wire with poor results.
It's much more conductive then kanthal, it's super springy and does not soften when heated, it breaks and it's close to impossible to do anything other then a mesh build with it.
I am currently researching the same thing: platinum or 24k gold wire. When studying microbiology, we used platinum wire as the best temperature resistant metal. I am interested in building a coil with 30 gauge Pt wire. Ebay has excellent options to buy the platinum wire. I am just not sure what to do.has anyone here use platinum wire at all? im looking to loose the slight metal taste i get from kanthal.
would SS or platimun wire be a better option? anything for else to look at?
Damn dude, you sure your name isn't Bill Gates? 24 gauge platinum wire is about 20 bucks an inch. 32 gauge is about 10 bucks an inch.I am currently researching the same thing: platinum or 24k gold wire. The platinum suppose to last a lot longer, that's why. No replacement for a long time.
Lasts for months and costs a whopping 5 cents for a set of coilsAt $20 an inch it would have to last years LOL My kanthal coils last for months!
Interesting user name, by the way!

hey everyone... i suppose i should ask the mods to change the name of this thread. i totally meant for it to be "titanium wire" and not platinum. not sure how i screwed that up.
