Plastic organic?

Honestly I wouldn't have thought it was such a bad thing, but plastics in our consumption chains are a plague.

Anyway, 55 minute vid from a true organic grower who does it the real way:

And just another example of how government bureaucracies (USDA) are lying liars and cheating cheaters.

@Jimi , have you started anything for your garden yet?
On a sidenote: will be heading up to the mountains soon to look for wild Morel mushrooms (last couple years have been a bust)
Also... peppers are doing fine but Mom's tomatoes are not doing well. This is the third season they seem to have a disease (that started when we used some crappy garden soil... if I had read reviews before buying it, I would have avoided it) It seems some plant diseases can stay in the soil for 3-4 years. It's a small garden and no where else to plant them. "New Zealand spinach" seeds have sprouted but it's cold and rainy today so they will go under a light until tomorrow.

I sure have just haven't had time to take pic's yet, my wife has been pretty bad lately physically so it has slowed me up but I do have 24 broccoli plants, 275 onion plants in and about 30 pounds of tader seed in. I have peppers that I grew from seed and maters from seed goin but not time here to put them in yet. Soon as I get some spare time I'll try to post pic.s

Glad your peppers are doin well and yes you haveta really watch soil for soil borne diseases, the better is worth the extra money. @gopher_byrd might be able to shed some light on the disease, he is studying to be a Master Gardener, sure he will help you but this week he is deep in study for a final so he might not see this for a short while.

Since moving is not an option, consider grow bags or pots with quality soil. You can still trellis them in the bags. I would go with a minimum of 5 gallon, but would prefer 10 gallon bags/pots. Here's a good site for diagnosing https://ipm.ucanr.edu/ that's what the Master Gardeners use. No login required.

Medicinal plants?

Growing healing herbs is so easy that I used to have a calendula and mint garden on the balcony of our apartment when Rowan was little.

And it's so empowering to be able to grow your own apothecary.

We only grow herbs that do well in our climate. Often, the more stressed a medicinal plant gets, the better medicine it produces. A little weeding and watering is all we ever do.

However, there’s a little more to gardening than simply sticking a seed (or plant) into the ground.

My friend, and fellow gardener and herbalist, Sue Kusch has an amazing amount of gardening knowledge. I often turn to her myself for gardening help!

This week Sue is presenting...

“How to Start Growing Your Own Medicine”

Sue shares lots of tips for growing a successful garden whether you have a big yard or live in a small apartment.

As Sue says, “There is no such thing as a brown thumb — just a gardener who needs a lesson.”

Join Sue for a knowledge-filled webinar to help you successfully grow herbs!

See you there!

The Ultimate Guide To Transplanting Seedlings

I lived in Phoenix, Arizona for nearly my entire life. Growing food in the desert is not easy. Heck, growing food ANYWHERE can seem like a daunting task...until you know the rules.

Do you know the rules?

Sometimes, people ask me if there’s a secret. They want to know one thing they can do that will dramatically increase the health of their plants.

The secret is in the compost.

On that note, I would like to introduce you to the new Worm Composting Bin that I found while searching for a new system to set up here at my new place. Check out Urban Worm Company's easy-to-use system. The food waste goes in the top, add a few worms, and the compost comes out the bottom. Go to UrbanWormCompany.org/UrbanFarm to see what our friend Steve has to say.

And to continue your learning, let these articles be your guide to great compost:

What happens when you pick a fruit or vegetable, Jimi?
It starts losing nutrients...more and more each day.
So if you buy blueberries that were harvested weeks ago, transported across the country, then sitting on grocery shelves for days… do they still have all those precious nutrients that are supposed to make them a “superfood?”
It kind of defeats the purpose of buying a superfood if it's been depleted of nutrients before ending up on your table.
On the other hand, if you grow blueberries yourself and pick them straight from your field, think about how much more nutrition you're getting!
If you've ever thought of cultivating your own superfoods, we've got the event for you! Our friends at Grow Your Own Vegetables are hosting the online LIVE Superfood Garden Summit May 14-17 to help you know exactly how to choose and grow superfoods for your farm or garden.

Jimi,

How many times have you heard the term "superfood"?

But what defines a food as a superfood?

Most people agree that these foods pack a greater-than-average nutrient punch.

Here's the scoop according to Harvard's School of Public Health:
"There's no scientifically based or regulated definition for superfood, but generally, a food is promoted to superfood status when it offers high levels of desirable nutrients, is linked to the prevention of a disease, or is believed to offer several simultaneous health benefits beyond its nutritional value."

In other words, they may be the missing link that helps you "eat your way to better health."

Perhaps you assume you need to import these "superfoods" you've never heard of from some remote place.

Nothing could be farther from the truth.

Remember, the nutrients in a "superfood" boost your immunity, prevent disease, and/or have several health benefits beyond nutritional value, increasing longevity.

But here's something to consider: Once a blueberry is harvested, it starts losing precious nutrients. Essentially, it dies a little bit each day, right?

If you buy blueberries harvested before peak ripeness, in some cases picked weeks or months early, that may have been chemically "ripened" during their long road-trip across the country, only to spend days on a grocery shelf… do they still have all those precious nutrients that are supposed to make them "super?"

Sure, they are probably still "healthy," but they should be full of life and vitality!

Let's face the ugly truth head-on. Nutrients being lost daily in the logistical process could be the exact answer to some of humanity's most serious illnesses.

For example, new research shows that blueberries lower blood pressure, improve memory and brain cognition, promote neuroplasticity, improve mental health, and reduce the risk for dementia and Alzheimer's.

So imagine growing those same blueberries in a container on your balcony, patio, or as landscaping bushes in your backyard.

How much MORE energy and nutrient-dense would those fresh-picked berries be?

And how much more fun and rewarding it would be knowing you grew them yourself!

Marjory is participating again in this year's Superfood Garden Summit hosted by our good friends over at Grow Your Own Vegetables.

And they want to offer you a FREE downloadable eBook that will show you how to grow 12 incredibly healthy superfoods, no matter where you live!

There's even a quick video for you that shares the five things you'll need to consider before growing your superfood garden.

Inside this quick guide, you'll see how to grow 12 of the fastest, easiest, and healthiest superfoods you can grow right now. You'll learn why growing superfoods is a more nutritious option than buying organic at the grocery store like...

  • Six reasons to grow superfoods (instead of buying them at the grocery store).
  • The easiest superfood to get started with, even if you haven't gardened before.
  • The most nutrient-dense vegetable that produces pounds of produce per plant.
  • Superfood plants that you can plant once and will return with BIGGER crops every year.
  • And how to decide which superfoods are suitable for you and your garden.
