I received some devastating news yesterday. My father, who had been a near-lifetime smoker, had a stroke sometime between Wednesday night and Thursday morning. I woke up to a few missed calls early in the morning from his number. When I called him back, my step-mom started telling me that he was done with his MRI and cat scan. I had to stop her and ask what happened. She said that he had suffered a stroke and was unable to move to pick himself up off of the floor.
He is able to speak, but has no movement in the right side of his mouth, can't move his right arm, and does have mobility in his right leg, although it is weak. He was coherent and able to correctly answer most of the questions he was asked. He is very frustrated and emotional... which is the hardest part because he had always been a rock solid kind of guy.
I have only ever known one other family member that had a stroke and she passed away when I was just about 10. I am lost. I have no idea what to expect, other than to prepare for the worst and hope for the best.
My dad is a sheet metal worker by trade, an amazingly talented wood worker, and loves to ride motorcycle and his ATV among many other things. I'm hoping that he will be able to enjoy most, if not all, of the things he loves to do, but I'm scared that this will impact him otherwise.
I'm not asking for money or donations. All I'm asking for is support and kind words and thoughts from this amazing community. I need my dad to get strong again and make a full recovery.
Thanks for reading - Chris
