This week’s SHIELD began with a major plot point that was a stretch – that Skye, after one dinner with Cal, was feeling much more daughterly and sympathetic towards him. On a season that has commendably upped the pace, it was one of a couple of times when something actually would have been better off taking a bit longer – just one or two more episodes to show Skye seeing Cal in a new light, to better sell her new perspective.
Still, putting that aside, what followed was a lot of fun. Kyle MacLachlan was all over this episode, which is always a good thing, and his delivery of lines like, “How about next time we grill?!” and “Big overdoer!” was hysterical, even as he showed the manic, dangerous side of Cal always lurking below the surface – one he’d later unleash on those Hydra agents.
