But I Don't Want a Dual Coil!

vapemesilly

Member For 4 Years
I started building on my Kanger Subtank Mini RTA recently and really like the coils I am building so I thought I would get another RTA to build on. I bought a GeekVape Griffen RTA online. It arrived and I opened it up and looked at it a went online to watch some youtube vids on building on this deck and realized that it is for dual coil builds only. It was a case of not knowing enough about this stuff before I went and made a purchase.

I'm really into chasing flavor, not clouds. Not interested in blowing ginormous clouds so i really want to stick to single coil decks... at least for a while.

Not sure what to do. I kind of hate to return it...I mean, I opened it. I should have ordered the GeekVape Ammit RTA instead.

I've been messing about with the Merlin Mini for about two weeks, it's awesome. I'm going to be writing up a review on it in a couple of days. I also have the Geekvape Ammit, good single coil RTA but IMO the Merlin Mini is much better.

But there are Youtubes out there for building single coils on the Griffin, might try that.

Another great single coils but with a much more restricted air flow is the Kayfun V5, I recommend the SXK clone.

From what I gather, the new Griffen 25 will take dual coil or single coil, but the standard Griffen is only for dual coils.

I'd also like to add the alpha one. they are still 10 bucks on vaporworld (so around 17 bucks shipped) have a large capacity so you don't have to refill often and give great flavor

I don't really use many tanks but like you, I'm after flavor. My go to tank is serpent mini and I also enjoy my Subtank mini with the RBA from time to time. I'm really interested in the Merlin mini and will probably pick one up at some point.

Fasttech has the plug & ceramic blocker, for the Griffin, I got them, they fit/work. When I got them they were 2 different sku numbers.

I really only use it when driving or if I'm gonna be somewhere that dripping would be a pain, otherwise I'm RDA all the way.

Since we're talking dual coils. Wait for the Bellus 25 to drop. I'm beta testing it right now and the flavor is just fantastic. It may be my favorite dual coil right now.

Variety's the very spice of life, that gives it all it's flavour.

How is the airflow compared to the original?
For whatever reason I couldn't get the first one not to leak and the few times I did use it the airflow was kinda wretched to me.

The Griffen 25 Plus so easy to wick. No dry hit and great Flav. No leaks at all. I used to be into RDAs a lot. Still have a couple and use at home sometimes but I'm always on the go with 2 businesses. It's almost impossible for me to drip. Having a tank is just so much more convenient for me with what I'm doing each day.

I've tried a few SubOhm rebuilds and couldn't wick those things. Then moved over to RTAs and wanted nice easy builds and a nice size deck.

Tried the Serpent Mini which is nice and I like the Ammit a good amount and put that on my DNA75. I wanted more capacity since I go through a lot of juice and decided on the Griffen 25 Plus and love that thing. Put that on my Alien with some dual Claptons and have amazing flavour and nice big clouds. What I also love is that the Griffen is pretty quiet. Don't need the wife nagging me because she hates the loud tank sounds ;)

Airflow fully open is like an Aromamizer Supreme 3/4 open. I normally vape it 3/4 closed. Beautiful conical chamber and a Merlin style DT. Trust me this one's a winner. Bone dry, no leaking at all. It has the same mesh in front of the airholes like the original. Every once in a while I get some condensation there if I chain vape the hell out of it.

And some. I almost picked up a Therion 166 the other day just for the hell of it. Those aren't cheap here in Canada. Almost dropped $230 CDN when I honestly don't need to lol. I turned my car around halfway to the store and said no. Was able to refrain myself lol

I wouldn't get so hung up on single vs dual coils for flavor vs clouds. I've got an Aqua V2 that's running dual coils, 31 gauge Kanthal at 1.5 ohms and around 16 watts that's giving me great flavor. The Aqua is a very different beat compared to your atty, just wanted to give an example of a dual coil setup that's designed for flavor rather than clouds and does it very well.

If you want to try a build in yours, I would suggest something like this to start with. Dual 28 gauge Kanthal, 2.5mm, 0.6 ohms (each coil is 1.2 ohms). I would start with the watts around 25, adjust as desired and see what I get. I don't have a Griffin, but I'm running Aromamizer RDTA's with similar builds and power and loving the flavor. My guess is you're going to do pretty good somewhere between 25-30'ish watts.

Best of luck with it and let us know how it goes if you decide to try a build.

So, you're talkin' the full size? I have that one, and the mini. They both just sit, but I never did build the full size. I got that one in a trade, but the SS tank isn't my thing. I need to see my juice level, lol.
Are these in order of preference? Your review have been fantastic!

I have this tank, and it does give good flavor, but the plastic tank keeps me leery of tank crackers, and honestly, I really do prefer the flavor from a glass tank. Mine didn't come with the screw for the single coil option, but I had an extra from my Lemo Drop, and it fit perfectly, so I managed a single coil with that one. Definitely a nice vape, regardless, and I like the look, and weight, of the tank.

For an mtl vape the full size kf3.1, kfmini 3 and the aqua v2 are still my top flavor rtas.
Fasttech used to sell some clone plasma caps and also quartz tanks so you can have glass with the kf3

I don't know about that bro. Granted, I've only vaped it with the tightest restictor pin in so far but this tank seems to have a much tighter draw than the Serpent Mini. I gave it a few pulls with no pin in it and it was still tight. It's got a real narrow chimney. I'll be running it wide open in a few days.

I don't notice any difference in taste between plastic and glass tanks Huckleberried. I think after 37 years of smoking my taste buds are probably fried, if I ever had any to start with that is :wait:

I love the Aqua for work. It's small, never leaks in any position, is very dependable to wick and does really well at lower power. I had a Merlin at work a few weeks ago, dropped my mod and broke the glass. I was able to tape it up for the rest of the day and drip, but I'm hoping the plastic tank is a bit more forgiving next time I do that.

The only down side to it is I find clamping thin wire without breaking it a bit tricky. I ended up twisting the ends of the 31 gauge I've got in there now and that worked well for me. That's just a minor point though, overall it's a keeper for me :)

FT has a replacement plastic tank for the Aqua too. I just got one and still have to see how well it fits, but I think the reviews were good. One of these days I'm going to have to take a look at making a SS tank for this one.

the only issue with plastic tanks is that some juices can eat through them. I learned the hard way years ago with my original kaifun

Yep, I won't buy a tank that is plastic. Insane $150 + Tanks like the Hurricane, Doggystyle are plastic. What a scam IMO.

I have a plastic and metal one.
I'm not sure FT still sells them; but, when the v2 dropped, they got ahold of some of the authentics from the manufacturer and we're selling them as authentic for 27$.
Footoon had a shitfit; and rightfully so. After that they kept stocking the same tank but labeled as "otm" for about 3$ more than the "clones." At that time you could buy just the SS tank and just the rda barrel.(to replace the tank and run it in RDA mode)

I first noticed the taste difference, back with my first Protank 2, lol. I really do notice QUITE a difference, though. The aqua does give me good flavor, just not from bakery vapes. Fruits, no problem. I won't be putting cinnamon in it, LOL.
