For anyone that knows me, I've made no secret about being diagnosed with COPD in 2015 and finally trying vaping because of that diagnosis. I also worked as an OJT Respiratory Therapist from 2001-2008 and was licensed in respiratory in 2006 (grandfathered in). That background gave me a huge insight into the deaths of people smoking and things that could have been avoided if vaping has been presented as an option. I watched dozens of patients die under my watch because they couldn't quit that deadly habit!
My background with COPD and vaping has been so positive, that if I was working in the field today I'd recommend every single smoker with COPD to try vaping to stop smoking. I was able to quit the very first day I started vaping and that was because I had a great community of people that knew what I needed to beat the addiction. I started vaping with an 18mg nicotine liquid, and a mouth to lung tank setup. I'd failed (and almost died) with "acceptable" nicotine replacement products and drugs. Chantix had me on the brink of suicide!
Within a few months of vaping completely, I stopped coughing all the time, no longer needed inhalers and was able to exercise and sing again. My pulmonary function test after two years was almost unheard of in a person diagnosed with COPD, it's almost like I never smoked! For someone that smoked 30+ years, two packs of Marlboro red 100's a day, I can only say vaping was my miracle. I've talked to several people just like me with COPD that had similar results, so it wasn't just that I got lucky! My diagnosis of COPD came from Chronic Bronchitis. Since I quit vaping in 2015, I haven't had bronchitis or pneumonia. Prior to vaping, I was being diagnosed with pneumonia at least twice a year after 2014.
The bottom line is, even with COPD, vaping can make a DRAMATIC difference in your lung health and we should be promoting this for every smoker diagnosed with it.
