Just like the title says, this is for brand new vapers who are thinking they might like to try building a coil. Consider this learning to take your first step. Even the fastest runner on the planet had to learn to take that first step. This is the basis for all other coil builds, therefore the first thing anyone interested in building their own coils needs to know. Don't worry, it is easy. I used only tools you already have. A wire, a screwdriver (that comes with the rebuildable atomizers) and wire cutters. (Nail clippers work too)

And no complaining about the video quality. I'm showing how to make a simple coil, not how to win an Emmy. LOL.

if enough people like this, I will consider adding more coil builds, gradually increasing in complexity.
Since this is for brand new vapers, I made the coil to run on regulated mods using 80 watts as the max limit, as this is what a lot of starter kits can do. This coil runs well around 30-40 watts. (well below the 80w max)

You can use http://www.steam-engine.org/coil.asp to adjust the properties of your coil, such as resistance, wire gauge, wire type, core diameter, etc. The video is just the method.

Coil Wrapping for beginners, Lesson 2.
Slightly more advanced than a single wire staple coil, a single wire clapton will give better flavor. You can make your own clapton wire or buy it already claptoned. It is more fun to make your own, and the more you do it, the better you get. All it takes is practice.
Start with short lengths, they are easier to work with. If you make a mistake, just reverse the drill, take the mistake out, and reverse the drill again to continue on. Plan on messing up a few times. You might just want to count your first attempt as a "throw away"

Single core clapton wire. Wrap exactly the same as the simple coil in previous video.

A parallel coil build, for beginners.
A parallel coil, is simply wrapping 2 or more wires into a coil, without twisting them. It is exactly like the simple coil except that you are now wrapping 2 or more wires at one time into the same coil. This allows you to increase the total surface area of the coil while reducing the resistance.
Lets look at this hypothetical example..

18 wraps of 32ga Nichrome = 6.72 ohm (to high to use)
6 wraps of 3 strand parallel 32ga Nichrome = 18 total wraps, but only 2.24 ohms which is within the operating range of the majority of regulated mods.

Remember, don't overlap the coils, keep them as tight and straight as possible. This is slightly more advanced than the simple staple coil.

Last in the series of coil building for new vapers. The fused clapton. This is a flavor coil. 2 core parallel wrapped with 32ga stainless steel. Notice, there is no resistance mentioned. That is up to you to decide. This video is for method only. You can build for resistance using Coil wrapping | Steam Engine | free vaping calculators. You do not include the wrapping wire in the resistance calculator because any actual current across the wrap is very small. Current flows across the path of least resistance and paralled 24 ga NiChrome has much less resistance than the stainless steel used to wrap the coil. Use the resistance of the parallel core wires for your resistance calculations.

    Edit: Posted incorrect video. Fixed.

A note to new coil builders. Don't worry if you mess up a few times and have to try again. Look at the bright side.. at least you didn't make a video and show your mistakes while you were doing them. LOL. I left those in on purpose, to show how to fix minor mess ups, the larger ones I edited out, to cut the video time, but the fix was the same as for the minor ones I left in.
These 4 videos are for new vapers wishing to learn the basics of coil building. They are also the 4 main coil types you will need. Once you can make a fused clapton, you never need to buy another coil unless it is for show. Sure, a 3 core fused zipper clapton coil may give slightly better flavor, but it is worth spending $15 per coil for? I can't imagine it would be.

I probably should have thought to add this earlier.. How to tune a coil and get it ready to use. (wicking is not shown as there are to many atomizers and wicking methods)

Just don't go into info overload. Watch them all if you like, but only concentrate on the part that applies to you now. Like don't worry about building a clapton if all you need to learn now is a simple staple coil. Concentrate on single coils, then ask about dual coils. It's pretty easy, just divide resistance by the number of coils. 1x 0.5 ohm coil = 0.5 ohm resistance. but 2x 1.0 ohm coils = 0.5 ohm total resistance. Concentrate on single for now though.

Great videos for new builders there @gbalkam , I am sure they will help a lot of people out.

I must ask though, the first video is titled as a single staple coil, is that just another name for a standard Micro/Macro coil? I never have delved into the really insane builds myself so am unsure exactly what stapled is lol.

I'm with you, Conan. I build simply. Clapton or kanthal. I'm moving up in my temp and desire to get the most out of my rebuild-ables. I'm going to purchase more advanced premade coils to study them and try to replicate them if possible, with experience. I've built so many micro coils that I'm ready to attempt something on a larger scale. Titanium is out for now.

Not sure, apparently the term staple comes from the shape of the coil.. like a staple like you might find in the center of a magazine or belly button, depending on what magazine you were looking at. :)

Single just refers to the wire.. single wire, double parallel, triple parallel.. ( I like triple parallel on mini rba builds... massive surface area and lower ohms.)

the micro, macro, mini, etc is actually referring to the inner core diameter. For example, a nano coil you might use 28ga wire wrapped around a 20ga needle or 20ga wire, then remove the wire you wrapped it around.
    WIN_20170409_045405.JPG

Top... nano coil. 3 strand parallel 32ga stainless steel
Middle.. 20ga stainless steel wire which i used to wrap the coil around
Bottom.. 3ml needle and syringe used for size comparison. I use the syringe to measure nicotine.

A macro coil, is like 4.0 or larger, which i might use on my temple rda (30mm base)

Ok then, thanks for the explanation, I can see the resemblance in that the legs make it look kind of like a staple before it is pushed into place.

I understand the other parts, just when someone mentions something like a double staggered stapled fused clapton or similar I have no idea what that means lol. I tend to use simple builds most of the time myself, either single or parallel. I haven't used triple parallel myself as I find a standard one to be more than enough for me.

I haven't made nano coils in a while, although they was a fun part of my learning to build progress. I was really surprised how much they could chuck for their size!

The only time I use Macro coils is if I am using a series mech and find I need the larger coils to allow fast enough wicking, and also to fit enough wire mass in there.

I do own two of the Big Buddha RDA's, although I haven't found a build I like in them yet. I find them to be a bit too airy for me even if I am throwing a fair bit of power through a pair of fused claptons. What do you find works well in the bigger RDA's?

Simple double and triple parallel coils are very useful when you want to put a lot of wraps on a single coil and need to meet the resistance limitations of your mod. For example.. a single coil, 32ga stainless steel coil (21 wraps) on a 3.0 id core is roughly around 5 ohms.. (21 wraps for surface area / cloud)
Now, by comparison.. 3 strand parallel 7 wrap of he same 32ga stainless steel wire on the same 3.0 id core comes in around 0.58 ohms. Well within the limits of your mod. Same 21 wraps, same surface area.. but one coil works the other doesnt.

Im going to try a couple of these on my mechanical mod.. just because I am curious. If I do and it works well Ill post some pics

Great idea to help the news guys! This needs a sticky

First post though agree with Conan a staple coil is an advance build using ribbon wire stacked on top of each other then wrapped with a thinner gauge ...when complete looks like a row of staples like the below example (not one of mine just pulled this from google)...definitely not one for the newcomers hehe

I always refer to vid one as a simple wrap personally don't know if that is the right term or not

Same here.. i just figured it was bc it looks like a staple. Maybe call it a simple single core coil. IDK..

I agree this should be stickied for the new builders who may be fearful to build there own coils, thinking they may be too hard to make themselves. So many people could save money, and also get a better vape, by switching to RTA's or RDA's.

I just call the first video a standard single coil, or a Micro coil if I am within that size.

Props to @gbalkam for making this, it will definitely help many new builders :)

Thanks for all the help guys. Here's a picture of my first ever coils. 24g kanthal, 9 wraps. Didn't waste any wire either. I found using needle nose plier to pull together and tighten the wrap helped a lot. Any advice from here? Just gotta get the multi-meter out and check the ohms on it.

Mount them and position them like that coil in the bottom left of the pic? then use an ohm reader to check the resistance ....dry fire them check they heat evenly from centre outwards (adjust as necessary)

You might get better results with 7 wraps than 9. I find when using 7+ wraps the cotton burns out of the middle of the coil rather quickly. Also, it looks like those are some rather large coils, so will take a lot of wattage to heat up. Wrapping looks pretty good though. Mount and tune them and they should be fine.

You know your videos helped me a lot, found them a bit late since I never look in this section, thought its just for beginners that want to build their own fancies. Guess that's my fault for assuming things lol. You would also assume coil building is simple and common sense, well not in my case, easy dry burning of the coil I was doing wrong, till I saw that video. Was doing it like the guys on YouTube, crank up to 50 w and hold that button, then strum strum and well strum. Had hard time getting two coils to glow evenly, blamed it on my ss316 wire. Its still hard to wrap tho or maybe I just need some practice. Didn't try other materials because most of my devices had issues with tc unless you use just ss. Now I got the hohm wrecker, might give kanthal a try or use some different ss or gauge. Great videos tho, please keep them coming :)

SS is tricky. You have to use higher ga wire to get the heat needed to make vapor. You get more vapor from lower gauge wires but this requires a hell of a lot of power with SS wire. Resistance wire like Kanthal heats better. SS is more conductive. SO you would get much better results with a kanthal or nichrome core wrapped in SS wire. (core heats the ss which is highly conductive and transfers the heat to the wick)
SS is useful if you need more wraps in a small space, such as in an RBA. (I use a triple parallel coil 6wraps in mine) *works out to 21 loops of 32ga ss at 0.50 ohm aprox* (This is a cloud build for an RBA mini *I use a 28g nichrome core clapton for flavor build*)

LOL I should maybe add videos as I try new coils, especially for my RBA Mini (kanger toptank mini rba)

It is very true. Building coils is not hard. Everyone seems scared to try it until they do the first one. You don't need to build really fancy coils, just coils that fit your needs. Maybe you are tired of buying premades at $4.00 each. A simple coil works for this. A single core clapton works well for extra flavor. Start simple and build more complex as you learn. Even the tallest building starts with a good foundation.

By the way.. I never use TC. It's just another method of doing what I am doing now. I know what my temp will be when I build the coils according to how many watts I push through it. I find watts / heat flux to be easier. Calculations are here...

    http://www.steam-engine.org/coil.html?s=dp&r=0.12&hf=260&awg=20&id=3.5

*that is a cloud coil I just built* :)

If you all don't mind, the subject of this thread is "...build your FIRST coil....".
Kingpin you had sound advice on positioning the coil.

However, a first time builder should be using just kanthal 26g with 5-6 wraps at 2-2.5mm. I preferred to have mine spaced vs. having them all bunched up in the center. It made my wicking burn way too fast.

For the beginner, keep trying this method with the kanthal in wattage mode and tweak your wraps and if you like them spaced or micro tight.

When you feel confident with your ability to build with kanthal, then try claptons. You'll like the change. Claptons are typically 2 pieces of 24-26g kanthal wrapped in a much thinner wire - say 36g. The heating is different, the flavor is different and again, you can tweak your build to get to your sweet spot between your wattage and resistance.

Always check the resistance and for hot spots before you wick your coils. And never stuff your coil so hard with cotton that you choke and burn it. One taste of a bad build will be an eye opener. Watch a few beginner videos, too.

After that, take heed to what some of the other threads are talking about. Buy pre-made coils if you want to sample semi-exotic (larger) coils. And remember, if one coils says .50Ω, that means if you have dual coils installed, it reduces the resistance by half, meaning you'll be vaping a .25 resistance build. Always, always, always keep your resistance between 2.5 and .50Ω until you again feel more confident. And DO NOT start your building journey on a mechanical mod just because you feel all the cool guys have one. That's a disaster waiting to happen - like blow your face off disaster. Stay with regulated until you know ohms's law, battery calculations and safety.

That's my 2 cents but I hope it's worth a million bucks to you.

    PART 2 OF POST
Then I ran accross another youtube channel (NO OFFENSE TO Hometown Hero he's got good tutorials but could go more in depth in videos an objects an idk it seems now he just reviews mods idk if there biased or not whatever let him do his thing.)

Anyway back to other channel I ran across OhmBoy Josh he goes more in depth it seems an on items kinda.
    Note:
Now I know it matters on individual preference and the style coil you are trying to build etc.

Start small and grow you don’t need all this list day one ..I don’t have everything on that list even now

To start coil building buy some wire obviously 26g, 28g, 36g, 38g and some ribbon 0.4x0.1 is a good place to start

the coil master V3 kit helps but there are others out there (I have the geekvape tool kit myself)
In it you’ll normally have flush cutters, screwdrivers, resistance reader, ceramic tweezers, scissors, toothless pliers and if your lucky a coil jig (some sets you have to buy this separately)

A drill certainly helps but you can start just by hand and keep it all simple. The fiskar hand drill is a nice to have at some point it’s not mandatory day one.

If you want complex coils you’ll need a drill, some swivels, hair pin which help for the chuck on the drill, an area to set this lot up, extendable clamps help as does a wooden block so you can attach the swivels to something. I still don’t have a vice to this day because I secure the wooden block in place with a clamp

nylon pliers help to not damage the wire wrap but aren’t mandatory at first, toothless pliers will at least get you started

Spool tamers help definitely worth a buy cause there’s nothing worse than the wire unraveling on the spool

Erm think that’s all of it

    Clapton
    Premium Specialty Wire
36k (with green circle next to it)

26g, 28g, 36g, 38g of what type? ribbon 0.4x0.1 Also heard of ribbon coil builds but idk what they are do you have a link?
I dont really understand how to use Spool Tamers ill get em though.Oh ya theres Spools then there spool tamers? Really shows I'm really have no idea. (Also on youtube no one goes truly in depth on everything an very few youtubers I find most I find is people using the coil master coil twister its likes jeez easiet thing to use ever..) But a hair clip for the builds I just wanna build? Also just saw "chuck on the drill" is that the black thing stick wires in in the video or link to one of those.

Again doubt be able to be able to answer some these questions (no offense I don't know skill level) also English second langeguage so its hard to tell if im being insulting I apoligize if so but you did help and know your stuff, I am grateful for your help. Maybe a pro will hopefully come in here and help I need this.

But ya if I just cant get any help from a pro what list do you give to me if you dont mind? Hopefully I can I'm not giving up but if you can't learn you can't do it.

Thank you again.I asked a lot in this post. I would really really really appreciate the help if not busy etc I still appreciate the help.

Also wanted to add this came to mind it seems waste of money an it breaks an has problems so this would be a no idk if the pro would be better has good reviews but I think there rigged - https://www.lightningvapes.com/products/avidartisan-daedalus-clapton-wire-tool?variant=36140275536

Again start small and grow this is a list I did for myself to progress through a checklist of builds (done all of these now)

start just with a simple build see if you can build within a target resistance using just one single wire

Next try twisting 2 wires together

    Try a single wire Clapton

After that put two wires side by side and wrap around them (Fused Clapton)

Now try three wire together and fusing them (tri-core)

Try an alien coil (big hurdle take a while to master technique)

Learn staggering techniques and attempt a staggered fused Clapton

Now you have those foundations try working with ribbon .......

Staple coil (stacking ribbon and fusing)

Framed staple (as above but with two round wire frames)

    Now combine skill sets

    Staple Staggered Fused Clapton (SSFC)

    Half SSFC

    Framed alien (Fralien)

    Staggerton

This list goes on and on ....

By the time you reach these builds you’ll know what all this means ...don’t try to run before you are walking is my advice :)

The Deadilus you can use but it won’t help you learn to coil build not when it comes to the later stages anyway

Spool tamer you wrap around the spool to stop the wire pinging of, can also use them outside of that

Yeah the chuck is the black thing at the end of the drill

Those gauges of wire you have kanthal, Stainless steel, nichrome (n80) pick whichever one interests you the most ...do some research with the three of them

So lost on that. Also swivels get confusing even watching videos. But I found a video that keeps it simple but still its like jeez man I just want to get started ON SOMETHING SO I CAN PRACTICE HAVE THE RIGHT THINGS anyway came accross this video talks kinda how you were talking an how you build maybe could you watch this not entire video or if not if you want but appreciate if take peek or so, just want the gear to get started an knows what they are talking about getting me going an links or where to get the best stuff I will even pay someone at this point.
Also I know theres a wire thread I guess just depends many different places? Is that what you do?

You don’t need to go crazy, you don’t know yet you’ll even like it, so get something cheap to start you off you want it so it sits flat (instead of angled upward) something like this one below - it doesn’t have the rotation speed of some but it’ll do

    https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B01I2XDICS/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_awdb_t1_DO1vBbMXT1JQS

I use a dewalt myself but that’s overkill and not needed

Swivel wise ...get some “Ball bearing Snap Swivels” size 2 will do everywhere sells them a lot of the peeps on here like the Tsunami Pro ones though they are tricky to find

I just leave the corded powerdrill on the bench on the left, and ziptied a swivel off the reloading press on the right.

You can work left or right, (reverse switch); long or short. The trick is getting wires aligned/tight for cores, and managing to focus on the damned wrapping wire - with or w/o bifocals, I almost can't see the 40awg now. Best-case for me is tilting head and getting the light to glint off it periodically.

Oh: aligning the cores - plural.. Get it twisted to swivel, draw it away and toward drill. HOLD TIGHT, and use pliers to bend or twist just past where you are gripping (and toward the drill). Mount it into bit. (you can loop the wrap several times first).

That drill is almos the same price oh ya forget your in UK. Wow must be the first person to have such a hard time even getting the right stuff to start. And of course got to get it exactly right or its done deal. Eh we will see. Also do the drills or specific drills have the spot where you bend the wire an insert in last part of drill then tighten it? I think it was in 2nd video below first first post did this bent each end like L shape or something

If cant find those swivels what other kind should you get? Also starting basic that video I posted ealier seems the way to go get a block of wood or whatever from store an set up like he has it. Also the c-clamp he's using does it have to be a specific type like which is one type the uses to hold the wood black down? What c-clamp do you use by forget his name recommended this one hometown hero thats it i cant find the one he is recomending on amazon i hate ebay would this be good if link does not show well your in UK so its different amazon but its
Goplus 4" Mechanic Bench Vise w/Anvil (Swivel) Table Top Clamp Press Swivel Base Heavy Duty $27 99

Im seeing its not neccessary to get this one but its good an easier for holding drill but best for future cause all that guy in video used was one thats just holds down the wood. Idk the different names you would give them though?

Btw video Im referencing in case forgot https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GG8Ospi1GN4&t=

Also I very very muc appreciate the help :) Also another thing it could wired drill instead of wireless Im sure that wireless is worth an makes it easier so thats why I'm going to get one.

My work bench so you can see the kind of set up I have easier that ping ponging matey

Though that long plank of wood on the base I later took away realised I couldn’t get the drill closer and it was throwing my mojo off when wrapping aliens

That clamp you pictured is ample for holding a block in place

You’re over thinking it all ...buy a bit of wood that will fit in the vice you buy ...buy some ball bearing fishing swivels doesn’t have to be a brand any will do ...screw them into the wood and chain 3 or 4 together

Use whatever drill you want cordless or corded doesn’t matter just make sure the swivel is at the same height as the chuck so if you lay it down orientate the wood differently

Done ....not rocket science mate don’t try to make it that way

Thanks bro ya I'mEXTREMELY over thinking it big time. Now on ball bearing fishing swivels what weight people have used 45Lb ones but recommend 90 or 120lbs swivels. Also on C-Clamps vises whatever you wanna call it is it best to just go to store an get c-clamp vise there or online? Like posted before. Also which is name difference for the one on top and the one goes under table hold block of wood in place I mean both can do that but it seems big youtube builders have one where drill is at an other side goes under table hold block of wood. Also what do you mean by "make sure the swivel is at the same height as the chuck so if you lay it down orientate the wood differently" I get the swivel part I heard same height an 90 degree angle but anyway the other half orientate the wood differently?

Also thanks for your patience I apologize with all the questions I just want to get right items an set up an start beginner building then move on from there.
