Earlier this week we reported on how Windows 10 could be sharing your activity data even if you had told it not to. In response Microsoft has released a statement from Marisa Rogers, privacy officer at its Windows and Devices Group. Microsoft is committed to customer privacy, being transparent about the data we collect and use for your benefit, and we give you controls to manage your data. This doesn’t completely disable telemetry by the way. Only on W10 Enterprise can you disable telemetry in Group Policy Manager, which is not included in W10 basic or Pro. Even then, an ARS Technical study revealed that even with telemetry disabled, windows randomly communicates with several hundred IP addresses, many owned directly by Microsoft, some by companies owned by Microsoft. Previous versions of windows did not exhibit this behaviour.

TL;DR if you like W10, you’ve gotta put up with telemetry. If you don’t want telemetry at all costs, W7 ultimate is your best option.
