I just can't get it right I coil pretty good but suck at wicking .. I've tried 1000 different ways thicknesses thinesses... it's that a word? I just can't get it right wick loocks soaked but tastes burnt after a small hit or two!
Here's a trick I use: I made a small wick shaping tool that has holes of the same inner diameter as the coils I usually wrap (2.5 mm or 3 mm) and beveled edges, to give them a conical entry.
When I make a wick, I roll it between my fingers to get close to the diameter I want, as usual. Then I draw the wick through the tool:
- If it's too thick, it doesn't go through so I remove it and shape it some more.
- If it's just slightly larger than the desired diameter, drawing the wick through the hole makes it longer and just thin enough to go through.
Once the wick has passed through the tool, I know it will go through the coil with just the right amount of effort, consistently the same wick after wick. The tool takes the guesswork out of wick making, and it only costs a few pennies and a few minutes to make.
