So there's a chain B&M that I believe has many locations along the east coast. Their business model has them catering more to the new vapor. Nothing wrong with that. However, a guy I work with decides to try vaping to give up smoking for his New Years resolution. My coworker goes to said shop and asks for advice on how and what to get started in vaping with. They set him up with a Kanger Cupti. Nothing wrong there. Then they set him up with nickle coils, put it into temp control and don't explain anything else about how the mod works, about temp control, just here you go and you should be fine. Is it just me or is this bs?

A little more help would have been nice. But, with that said, at what point does the responsibility land on one's self? You must take the reigns and do a little digging to find what's what. There is a manual that comes with the mod as well as search engines. It would take days to explain all the ins and outs of that mod and tank and vaping in general.
To summarize, some more information would have been safer and better but at some point it's up to the person to educate themselves.

I agree with the personal responsibility but if someone were to come to me that was wanting to get into vaping, I wouldn't push them right into temp control. Temp control just seems like something for a some what more advanced vaper.

No disrespect to your friend is intended by me.
Did he feel like he didn't have all of the information he needed when he left?

If that is the case why did he pay and leave without asking as many questions as he needed to until he felt confident?

If he did feel confident, was his plan to use the mod exactly as shown until he learned more about it? Nothing wrong with that idea as long as he plans to do the necessary research/follow-up.

Curious as to when he felt he was led wrong.

we also must remember with the reg a shop can not even show you how to use your mod. so buyer must be informed before hand. at least he has a co worker who can train him up not everyone is that lucky

He thought it was pretty much just plug and play. He definitely didn't do much home work which is on him but after I filled him in with information on temp control and power mode, he said that he felt for him being a brand new vapor they should've stuck him with some kanthal coils. With the way the laws are now I guess there was only so much the store could have told him, which he was unaware of and led into a whole other conversation.

They shouldn't have set him up with Ni coils, knowing they couldn't advise him on the danger of using them in power-mode. I mean, it's got buttons...people gonna push buttons. Human nature.

All they really wanted was the extra couple of bucks they charge for Ni coils anyway.

I have a local B&M here that teaches quite well, even to more veteran vapers like me. I could be wrong, but perhaps the regs were lifted a bit in the regard to education. Or perhaps my B&M are rebels, I'm not sure.

From my understanding, they can explain how the mod works, they just can't teach you how to build or build coils for you. I could be wrong though

Nope, sadly you are not wrong.

I have a good friend that operates a couple of B&M's.

All you can do is provide some links to the better Youtube videos and places like Steamengine

I think upcoming regs basically limit, what shops can assist customers with.

Yep, in doing so it helps them with killing Vaping and Vapers or to get them back to Tobacco which serves their masters, Big Pharma.

No offense. Theres plenty of blame to go around. But from a different pov it's possible that b&m might have been staffed with temps and at this time of year, more than likely they were busy with new years sales.

Possible but if I'm in a hurry and I don't want to take the time needed with a new vapor, I'm throwing in a kanthal coil, 5 clicks to turn on, wattage up and down, there you go.

If anyone deserves the blame for endangering the public it is the FDA...From what I could tell the B&M is only allowed to tell you the model, color and price, they can't go into any detail or give you any useful info besides youtube links and the like

Sounds like avail. I know a guy that was working as a meat cutter in wally world before and now is in runnings to be a manager. Smh. Probably knows less than your average vaper.

    Interesting ---
So, the B&M that I bought my first "good" setup at ... Pico 75W Kit.
I had to pay for the item, and then open it up myself (in the store). Once I opened up the package, he then showed me how to put coils in the tank, operate the MOD, replace batteries, etc. I purchased some juice and he then showed me how to prime the coil and fill it up. I then took a few vapes right then and there.

    This was Sept 2016

IMHO, the FDA is so freaking ill informed that they don't have a clue about what can happen.

That being said, Ohio Congressman Steve Stivers is one of the few that is with us vapers in the war against the FDA.

I have wrote him before and he has always answered.

Tomorrow I will write him again in particular about B&M's not being allowed to help new vapers build safe coil/battery combinations.

I will report back on this.

Most of the good vape shops where I live went out of business when the state got all draconian with ejuice tax. a few still exist, but they are staffed by minimum wage drones who simply punch a clock and sell what ever stuff the boss wants moved.

That's kind of nuts that vape shops can't even show people how to use the device. Especially if it would improve the experience or potentially make the experience safer. That's about as dumb as banning driving schools or gun safety courses. Nope, it's on you. Just drive it, if you bounce off enough shit you'll learn. Government inefficiency at it's best again.

I really don't see the big deal with starting a new vaper off with temp control. That's how I started. My first mod was a Sig 75 TC with a Kangertech STM and factory Nickel coils. The guy showed me how to install the coils, navigate the menu system and warned me to never ever run it in power mode with the blue coils. He told me if I want to run it in power mode to buy the red coils. Funny thing is I bought the mod and tank online and had no idea how to work it. I walked into the B&M told them I know I didn't buy this here but if you help me I promise you I'll be great customer. After they helped me out I dropped $100 there in coils and juice. I still use this exact B&M till this day. Temp control is really not this big mystery that everyone makes it out to be. With the right mod, tank and instructions it's really not that hard.

There in the lies the problem. This guy comes in, doesn't know a thing about vaping other than it might help him quit smoking. The worker shows him how to turn it on, sets up the device without explaining anything to him other than where to fill his juice and how to fire it, then send him on his merry way. No, hey this coil is bad if you fire it in power mode, nothing at all.

Oh definitely, no doubt he should have been given more instructions. My point was I don't see the big deal with a new vaper starting off in tc. As long as the said vaper is instructed properly.

My favorite local vape shop has no problem helping me with anything vape-related, be it rebuilding or whatever.

Maybe those regulations everybody is talking about don't pertain to (Southern) California?

Maybe your vape shop is just saying fuck it, we're helping our customers. As far as regulations go in California your state is almost medieval about it.

A lot of shops will still help people out as much as before, as long as they know the person. For somebody new coming into a shop they will probably be less accommodating because that's how they have to be to stay out of trouble.

I live in the heart of tobacco country. Tobacco farms are everywhere around here but the vaping industry seems to be thriving here, which is sort of ironic.

I love my vape shop. Friendly, helpful, straightforward and good prices. All the prices in the shop are basically the same as buying the items online and paying for expedited delivery. But instead of waiting for delivery I can just drive 2 miles to the vape shop. :)

This is the exact reason why I purchase everything online and no longer go to the local BM shop. The asshats who work there are too busy playing Xbox on the plasma screen with their buddies in the lounge to help an average guy who just wants to make a purchase, ask a question or two and leave.
Granted, this is a specific problem at my local BM and not a complaint about every shop out there.

He did not get any instruction nor is he allowed to, by law, receive any from the place he bought the gear from....

Does that clarify the problem any?

No one is disputes that. My point again, is I don't see it as an issue for a new vaper to start off using tc. Providing they do get the proper instructions.

Does that clarify it for you?

The people that do the work before starting, come here asking question and do other research before picking up their first mod, sure they are more equipped to deal with TC, but someone walking into a vape shop and has no clue, hellz no, they should never be sold NI or TI coils. Give them SS or kanthal and remove the risk of them doing harm to themselves

Whats the matter with a new vaper starting off with SS coils? This way they have a choice to run in power or SS mode. When TC was new and everyone was running Nickel I would have been more apt to aggre with you. Now though, most people that run in TC use SS. In fact I would venture to say that most vapers use Kanthal or SS overwhelmingly. At least that's what I see in the vape shops I go to.

people working in almost all vape shops get paid very little......you pay peanuts you get monkeys.....a newbie goes to a shop looking for expertise, that is why you are paying so much more than buying online..... to consult with someone knowledgable...I'd say in about half the shops I've been in the expertise wan't there.

bussiness owners are not entitled to our bussiness or trust...if they don't provide a service ..namely an educated staff to help a newbie, then they deserve to be called out and the community warn people off from their shop...you want workers of quality then pay more for them, or invest money in their training...
