At the end of the first Avengers movie, fans were given their first glimpse at Thanos, who smiled knowing that by challenging the Avengers, he was courting death. This was a reference to the comics where Thanos is obsessed with gaining the favor of the Grim Reaper-like figure of Death herself. The tease was done in a way so it could be taken as literal or figurative, leaving fans wondering how Thanos' motivation would be handled in Avengers: Infinity War. But those who have seen Infinity War know that they went a completely different route.
