Need suggestions for complex coil builds for flavor and if I can buy a spool of it?

Okay...I want to try to keep this relatively simple. I'm currently using a Sigelei 150W, no TC, but I'm getting a new box mod soon. One that can run TC, and SS, TI, etc..just for a reference. Also, I'm not up on the terminology and technicalities. Was vaping about 2 years ago and got out of it, recently started again a couple months ago and holy shit, a lot has changed!!!

1) I'm trying to figure out what the best style of coil is for flavor? Fused calpton, Alien, Transformer, etc.?
2) Second question, can I buy a premade spool of it?

Please be nice...I know I don't know as much as you. Thanks :)

Welcome back, the 150's a good box. Take your time if you want to get a new regulated Mod. Personally, I'm not into TC, to much busy work for to little gain. But it is popular so it's worth taking a look at, just take your time and don't be in a rush for you've got a very good Mod already.

For me SS fused claptons are where it's at and I spin my own, it's actually pretty easy. Also spinning your own opens up a very wide variety of options. Like I spin all the way to 34x2/40 for my Tootie Puffers. I mostly stick with 28g - 30g for core wire and 26g-38g for the wrapping wire. Aliens do give a little bit better flavor, but for the effort I've just been sticking with Fused Claptons.

Yes you can buy Fused Clapton wire by the spool but options are limited thus why I spin my own and again they're pretty easy to make. The other like Alien, etc. not so much, you'll either have to buy premade custom coils or spin your own wire.

Thank you!! I've heard that the putter wire should be smaller than the core... like having 2 28ga core wires with, say a, 40ga outter wire? What's your opinion? Mind you, I am interested in flavor builds. As much flavor as I can possibly get!

I use 317L SS, slightly higher resistance than 316L but since 99% all I vape on are Mech's it makes a difference. SS is a almost 1/2 the resistance than Kanthal so yes you use smaller gauge. My go to as I mentioned was between 28g - 30g for the core. 36g-38g I've found to be best for me for the wrapping wire. I won't use anything larger than 34g for the wrapping wire even though for the premade spools 32g wrapping wire is everywhere. The thinner/higher gauge wrapping wire heats up and cools down faster, much faster. => 40g is very fragile thus I only use it when I have 34g core wire.

Flavor, fused clapton is where it's at IMO. You can get gains in flavor using Alien and fancier builds but the improvement is slight. The jump though from basic or even twisted wire to fused clapon is huge.

IMO try out the different wire and find what you like. I still do recommend trying spinning fused clapton wire yourself, it really is easy. Just get a drill, some good quality ball bearing fishing spinners and some good wire and have at it.

My go to Wire is
  • Atomizer Wick (317L SS and excellent Kanthal)
  • Temco (Kanthal)
  • Kidney Puncher (316L SS and excellent Kanthal)

Their SS is Smelted in Sweden and milled here in the US, their Kanthal is real Sandvic kanthal (they invented and hold the patent on it)

Here's an excellent vid on making fused claptons, for me it was what got me going.

Awesome vid thanks for the link, makes it look so easy (bet it's not lol) guiding that thin wire up on full speed gonna take some practice :) must admit I use pre made coils at the moment really want to give this a go though Will be using this when I do

Actually it is pretty easy, it'll take a little bit of practice for things like getting the feel for having the right tension. But after you do it for a few times it just clicks. With this method I'm able to make fused claptons with 34g core wire ;)

Get some cheap practice wire (Pure Atomist works great) and you'll get it.

What are some good websites to order wire from? And I've heard kanthal core with SS outter... What are your thoughts? As much flavor possible

For Kanthal
  • Temco
  • Pure Atomist
  • Atomizer Wick
  • Kidney Puncher

For SS
  • Atomizer Wick - 317L
  • Kidney Puncher - 316L

Keep SS together, fine to mix 317L and 316L.
Kanthal, you can have NiChrome as a wrapping wire if you choose instead of Kanthal

I Prefer SS, much better flavor IMO along with being more responsive.

Kidney puncher, you have to get it from Kidney Puncher. But the other brands you can find on eBay, Amazon or directly from them

Any big difference between 315L and 316L?

You mean 317L and 316L, I think so. I prefer 317L over 316L, not quite as low of a resistance and it seems to work and last longer for me. I like it, best advice is to try them all out. There's 304, 430 and 321 also that I have tried, they don't work as well for me and 321 along with 304 also tasted like shit IMO.

Best is to play with them all and find out which you like best.

Out of interest what resistance will you end up with using 317? I ask because I'm aiming for 0.15ohm

Not much above what 316L has, but a little. Sometimes it's a wrap or two (maybe) less than what is needed for 316L

Let put it to you this way... If this half blind, shaky handed, old fart can build fused Clapton's then you can also... :giggle:

My go to is SS316L 26 x2/38 7 wraps with 3 mm ID. Dual coils come out to 0.14 Ohms when cold. I have built as small as 30 x2/38 fused Clapton's to use on my REO Grand mechanical squonk boxes to keep the resistance from getting too low. I like to use the 38 gauge for the Clapton wire to keep the ramp up/down reasonable and it creates more channels for flavor. For the fancier coils, I just don't have the time and mostly the patience to even attempt them. I do like to look at the coil porn though.

Hahaha thank you for the inspiration!
So I don't mean to sound like a dumbass but it's written out as 26×2/38, I'm assuming that means two 26ga core wires wrapped with a 38ga? Just needing to clarify? And do you use SS for the inner and outter wire?

Yes to both. I just use a drill I already had, bought some decent swivels and some nylon jawed pliers to take the twists out that happen no matter how good your swivels are. The first few times you try won't be perfect, but once you get it down you get the satisfaction of a great vape that you created yourself. Enjoy and ask questions if needed.

Until I get a new mod that can run SS, I think I may just try doing a kanthal core with nichrome outer as you stated. Again I'm using the Sigelei 150. Do you think I should try that or just go full on nichrome and use it for the core wire as well? Just wanting to be sure before ordering a bunch of wire... I also want to try to get as much surface area so I was thinking about maybe trying a 40ga or 42ga for my wrap wire. Thoughts? Again, I really appreciate the help!

Yes Nylon Jawed pliers are a must, I'm trolling beading and jewelry tools all the time.

You don't need anything special for SS, it'll run in power mode just fine or temperature control. I'm hardly ever on a regulated mod these days and mostly always on my Mech's. I love SS for it's clean, crisp flavor and how responsive it is. Your Sigelei will run it just fine

Get some wire from Pure Atomist, it's inexpensive and actually decent quality wire. Get various gauges, play around a bit and find what you like. Once you get Kanthal down I recommend start messing about with SS, it's actually a bit easier to work with. I recommend practicing on kanthal a bit first just because it's cheaper. As for NiChrome, give it a whirl and see how you like it, me I don't like the flavor cause I'm spoiled with SS ;)

There's cheaper wire out there but it's usually dirty, doesn't hold up as well and honestly a waste of money IMO. Quality wire isn't that expensive, 100ft 26 gauge around $6 and 500ft of 38g for around $19...... You might save $2 for cheap Chinese wire that turns your fingers black, is $2 worth it?

Temco is also inexpensive and good quality, check Temco's site, Amazon and eBay you can get the wire at a decent price.

Also for just starting out, try 24x2/32 kanthal just to start out with to get an idea what you're doing. Get like a 50ft spool of 24 and a 100ft spool of 32g, it's cheap and good for you to get the hang. I'd then move to a wrapping wire of 34g and 36g, play with those for a bit. You can then start progressing to smaller wire.

Play around, it's fun ;)
