I’ve been vaping 1 week today and haven’t touched a cigarette since, after smoking one pack a day for 24 years. I am proud of that! And to top it off, I no longer even have any cravings for a cigarette.

I’m enjoying vaping. It is a fun hobby with all of the different gadgets and juices available. I am already noticeably breathing much better in just one week. My question is, In the past few days, in the morning shortly after I wake up, I do go into coughing fits that I never experienced when I smoked cigarettes. There is no discharge, just coughing. Is this most likely a withdrawal symptom from smoking, my lungs clearing out, or is it a new problem caused by vaping? I’ve been vaping about one 8ml tank of 6mg nicotine per day for a week.

I’m thinking it’s normal as well. There’s no way you can smoke as long as I did and stop suddenly with no side effects. I just want to make sure the vaping isn’t causing a problem. I really doubt that it is, but if my issue persists I will go to a doctor.

Keep yourself well hydrated ...throat soreness is very normal to begin with if it continues you can look into the VG / PG ratios in the juice mix to help ease it ...there is no one standard magic mix unfortunately you’ll figure out whether you prefer high VG or not

I personally found at that start 70/30 (VG/PG) was a good mix for me

Welcome and congratulations. What you are experiencing in the coughing fits is normal. This is your lungs thanking you for stopping smoking by clearing out some of the crud. Its the cilia in your lungs coming back to life and doing some house cleaning. You are about to experience all kinds of awesome body restarts like smell, lung capacity and taste.

Yeah 70vg/30pg is good. I currently have 3 liquids and two of them are 70vg/30pg, the other one is 75vg/25pg.

One big health positive so far in no longer smoking is I don’t wake up with lung pain.

There is one major side effect.

Your sense of smell comes back!

One day about two weeks after getting off o stinkies, I got into my car and it just REEKED of years of smoke and Cigarette Butts.

Took it to an auto detailer and after two hours and $125 it was spring fresh again.:vino:

Also in extreme circumstances, your pecker falls off.:p:D

I shared exactly that same experience ...also not feeling puffed out walking up a few flight of stairs :)

Just be wary for thicker mucus to start with ....that comes with the higher VG and crap clearing from your lungs, it’s ones of the reasons keeping well hydrated is important

    First off.. congrats on quitting
Next, that coughing will go away in a week or 2. Just drink more water or use a higher VG ratio. You will find, you will be drinking a lot of water.. but.. it is good for you. It helps flush all the bad stuff out of the system.

Thank you all for the replies. The coughing has subsided, the past two days I haven’t coughed at all. And still the best things are that my lungs no longer hurt when I wake up, and the smell of cigarettes now repulses me. I won’t go all evangelical on people who smoke and preach how awful it is, but I am showing off vaping to as many people as I can. I’m loving it! Not only am I not smoking cigs, but I found a cool new hobby.

Awesome and congratulations. One day at a time and keep up the great work. Now you can begin the process of healing in places smoking killed off and watch the miracle of recovery unfold on your very own body. You are about to embark on a journey of greatness internally, enjoy it. Cheering for you.

Thanks man! My short term goal is to drop to 0 nicotine liquid, I started with and still am using 6mg, which is still way less than a cigarette. After that, I want to step down the vaping. I’ll admit I’ve been hitting it heavily in the past week and 3 days. Probably not unusual for someone transitioning from cigarettes to vaping.

Wouldn't sweat too much about chain vaping right now. Do it and keep away from the stinkies, once that craving and desire to smoke is farther and farther from your mind; then start the process of tapering down. Try not to give yourself any excuses or avenues to want to pick up a cig. You are in the honeymoon phase right now. In a couple of weeks you could get stressed and then run right to it. Baby steps is your road to victory here.

That’s exactly my plan, and I need to keep a “one day at a time” mentality. So far, I haven’t even thought about smoking an actual cigarette in a week, which is a milestone for me. I’ve tried other methods to quit smoking, and all I ever thought about was smoking a cigarette, which is why the other methods didn’t work.

The plus sides to chain-vaping is that it doesn’t stink, it doesn’t make me feel like shit, and it is very inexpensive compared to smoking. I haven’t found any negatives of vaping compared to smoking.

At this moment, right now you have a bunch of random internet people cheering for you that have been right where you are coming from and have been where you are going. There is likely 100's of years of experience collectively in quitting the death sticks. Leverage that and use it man. Cheering for you full throated on this one.

Thank you very much, I appreciate it! This forum is a great resource. Very friendly as well, as long as you’re not a total dumbass troll, lol. Much friendlier and helpful than most of the other forums I frequent on various topics. I know it’s random people who I don’t personally know, but I do know a few people who have quit smoking by switching to vaping, and they give me encouragement as well.

This is a big one and worth noting. In my smoking life, I would stop at a convenience store at least once a day to buy cigarettes, and I would usually buy something else while I was there.

In my vaping life, the only thing I’ve stopped at a convenience store for is gasoline.

I bought my first setup with a weeks worth of smoking money and still using that same MOD and tank to this day~! The last weeks worth of cigarettes was gone in the wind years ago. And those assholes on ECF told me my purchase was not a good one~! Paid for itself years ago and still returning dividends......................... Is it actually making me money?

A common misconception among smokers is that vaping is expensive. In reality you could buy several high end mods, coils and e-liquids with just the money from a couple of months of smoking a pack a day.

I do know that with vaping, at least for me, it is important to buy a good setup and e-liquid. In the past I tried the gas station e-cigarettes a couple of times, and they discourage quitting smoking more than they help. It’s kind of like playing guitar. If you buy crap to start, you won’t want to play it and will give it up right away. Buy nice equipment, and you will look forward to playing it and become better.

It’s definitely subjective. For me I found that the nicotine delivery from a sub-ohm tank eliminated the need or craving for a cigarette, where the cigalikes just weren’t cutting it, and I could never get the hang of inhaling from them. They were always not enough, or they made me cough, never a perfect hit. I do know now that there are good cigalikes available. Everyone’s experience and preference is different.

I quit cold turkey and got nic sick a few times when I was in withdrawals. Everyone has a different experience but I had over 20 boxes of cartridges and multiple batteries for me to vape. I also refilled the cartridges. When the Cartridges almost doubled in price I switched brands to the Logic and then they got more expensive so I said fuck this and never looked back. With DIY and Factory coils if I spend $5 a week that is a lot.

Now I have so many MOD's and 2 4 Bay battery chargers but still use the On Board Charging because I can't keep all my MOD's ready to go without it. DO NOT Listen to the assholes who say you should not charge in a MOD. This isn't the last decade you know technology moves faster then their asses.

2 weeks and 2 days in, I’m still loving vaping and haven’t even thought about smoking a cigarette. I don’t think I’ll ever smoke a cigarette again. If worst came to worst and I didn’t have access to my mod, I would buy one of those crap disposable e-cigs from a convenience store before I I smoke a cigarette. Another health positive I’ve noticed is that I used to get regular acid reflux, at least a few times a week. Since I’ve stopped smoking cigarettes, I haven’t had it once.

Congrats on quitting cigarettes by vaping-
I coughed a lot in the beginning too-
I figured it was clearing out 30+ years of cigarette smoking as I coughed like that when I quit smoking cold turkey ( no vaping) in the past.
It does take a bit to transition with vaping, just make sure you are drinking some water, it helps.

I can second that. I had second thoughts for about 3 weeks after my Joyetech eVic Primo Mini broke down. I smoked again for about 3 weeks, not a lot, it was 3, maybe 4 packs of cancer sticks. The coughing and phlegm was already coming back and i said no more, went to my local vape shop and bought another mod. Have smoked exactly 2 cigarettes since buying the new mod 2 weeks ago and i'm feeling great. I have started building my own SS316 coils too. Temperature control is awesome!

Breaking down the cost, i ended up to the conclusion that even if buying a new mod every 3 months, taking in equation the price of juice and everything (i mix my own juice), it is still HALF the cost of smoking even just 10 cigarettes a day, and that's not even getting into the health benefits at all.

One day later after buying my second mod, i repaired the Joyetech, but the issue i had with it is a design flaw which would require some spot welding to fix (atomizer screw is simply pressed into the base, that causes it to stop making good electrical contact when it gets hot). So now i keep it just for light use, planning to buy a smaller MTL type atomizer for it.

My daily use mod is now an eLeaf iStick Power (what a complicated name!) :D I like it a lot, good high-capacity battery, nice form factor and a faux wood finish that looks great on any bar table.

I coughed for over a month after 30yrs and 2 packs a day, not to mention most juice was 50/50 back then. In my 4th yr of Vaping and usually use 70/30 or above juice I make myself.

Have noticed that high PG juices only made me cough for a short while, and likely had more to do with my lungs clearing from all the tar than with the juice itself.

After i broke the smoking habit I have tried 50/50 and even 95% PG with no ill effects other than a sore tongue and the need to drink more water.

    Here's what I know.

When I vape, I usually chain vape (3MG @ 80-85 watts). I keep water with me at all times, but I still get dehydrated. I vape A LOT. Some side effects include cramping on my middle abdomen - Right AND left side, but mostly right.

I put the vape down for 36 hours & drank bottle after bottle, cup after cup of water. The cramping almost went away completely. That's either some crazy coincidence, or chain vaping affects the body in more ways than we know.

I can guarantee you that I vape more than most average vapers, but I didn't know the effects until recently. I've been vaping & off cigarettes for over 3 years now, and my advice is this:

Take regular breaks, and don't vape unless you're really REALLY craving it.

Vaping may be better than smoking, but inhaling anything other than air is not good for you.

I'm not trying to be a downer, it's just that after these cramps, I started to reassess my habits, and the result is the same. I started vaping to stop smoking, which worked 100%. Now, it's time for phase 2. Slow down the vaping. This is followed by step 3. Quit.

Vaping is the best substitute for smoking, but even vaping should only be a TEMPORARY substitute.

    My advice is simple: Quit.

I always assumed most people knew that water is human lube and we needed to drink it (lots of it actually). With the people dropping in whining about cramps and failing organs, teeth falling out and shit, it amazes me that some people still do not have enough sense to lubricate themselves, much less not go see a doctor when body parts start falling off.

My advice is simple: Quit Chain Vaping!!!

    Get a pod system.
Vape 1ml a day instead of doing 24/7 lung punches of some sweet shit with almost no nic in it while going through 20ml's a day.

    Nicotine has benefits.

Inhaling 20X more flavoring agents to get that nicotine doesn't

Many People start smoking because of those benefits and most of us are just looking for those benefits without a side order of lung cancer.

Harm Reduction is like doing a cost benefit analysis.

Nicotine and a small amount of harm (vaping) VS Nicotine with the most harm humanly possible (cigarettes)

It's your body attempting to clean itself (lungs) I do it too, but after a month I am finally coughing crap up and I am feeling/breathing even better than before. You have to keep the VG/PG about 50/50, give or take, because too much VG can coat your lungs and cause more coughing. Also making it more difficult to cough up the crap that is in your lungs.

    Actually.. no.
First off.. only 10-20% of the vapor ever gets to your lungs, the majority of the nicotine is absorbed in the mouth, throat, airway.
2nd PG is much more harsh than VG.. so would be more of an irritant when inhaled. 50/50 is ok for mouth to lung because there is very little vapor produced.
3rdly.. Both PG and VG are absorbed by lung tissue within 2 hours. So there is no "residue" like there would be with cigarettes.
4th both the PG and VG coat and trap any gunk attached to your lung and the small hairlike fibers called cilia. This also makes you drink more water so you keep hydrated and don't get a sore throat from the additional coughing. If you find your throat still gets sore, try a 40pg/60vg ejuice.

At first you will notice you cough up a good amount of brown - greyish looking phlem but after a couple weeks the color changes to a more white or clear color.

One of the main proofs that the pg/vg is not coating your lungs is that after 2 or 3 days you will find you are breathing easier and don't get out of breath taking your socks off at night. :)

Same here, stopped coughing on the morning after a couple of days. I also eventually found that high VG wasnt suited for me causing tight chest and wheezing, went to high PG and issue solved.

I get what you are saying, but 1st off, my 50/50 comment was give or take. I didn't say to stay at 50/50. 2nd, I didn't say anything about VG being an irritant causing coughing. The coughing I was referring to was the body's natural way of expelling what didn't belong in the lungs. So, I think you may have misunderstood what I was saying. No biggie though. I think he gets the point.

Actually, it was more about vg coating the lungs. The rest was just more info on pg/vg. LOL fact is, if it did coat the lungs I would have ended up drowning myself long ago.. I used cloud chasing as a hobby to take my mind off cigarettes for about 6 months.
