So I'm running the risk of sounding really dumb here but here goes I'm new to Clapton recently just made my first Clapton wire which led to my first Clapton coil now does it matter more what the core is or more what the covering is? Like if I wanted to use it in temp control does both wires have to be temp control or just the outer wire?

My understanding is it is only the core that matters. The wrap isnt carrying current, the core is what heats the wrap. This is why some people use another coil in parallel to help heat the clapton faster.

What would happen if you did a ss core wrapped in kanthal, could you still run in TC?

I've heard that mentioned before. Am I missing something? It seems to me that if two conductive wires are both connected at both the positive and negative terminals of any device (vaping related or not), they would both carry current.

I guess my question really was more about the temp control aspect I guess I'll stick to Ti wrapped in either Ni or SS or a different combination but basically stuck to temp control wires for temp control and nichrome and kanthal for vv/vw thanks for the advice

Never tried before but I would think of the core was TC wire, then the wrap would need to be. Just need be able heat the wire to vaporize the juice. Should be fine with kanthal since it is thin enough.

I will order some 460 stainless today... not sure what guage I should get though... and do a fused clapton wrapped in 32 Guage kanthal and TC that and see what happens.

Brought to my attention I used the wrong grade. I meant 430 and not 460... haha long day at work today!

I don't know yet. I built this to fit a Buddha v2 but I have a fresh set of fused Claptons in it and didn't want to take them out yet. It won't fit any of my 3 post rda's and both of my 2 post velocities are broken. I'll most likely have to stop in at my local shop and pick up a new deck. This coil would fit a 4 post 22mm deck very good.

My third build, fer the Golly, first of 24 g. 'bout .6 ohms, liking it immensely. Cotton almost ready to change, and quench-clean the coils. Damned MuffinMan...next set get spun a little cleaner. Two day old Gladiator build Optimal.JPG

Had a second try at a fused clapton. This time with dual 26 gauge nichrome wrapped in 32 gauge kanthal. Took my time with this one. Used the nylon pliers and rolled the drill back slowly to get out the twist and flatten out the clapton. Had a couple stubborn twists I had to straighten it with two sets of pliers. Wrapped it at 2.5mm and it wrapped good and flat. Still need to work on keeping the wrap tight. So there are some gaps in the wrap... oh well.

This thing running at 75 watts had flavor for days and makes a solid dense cloud. VERY happy with this build.

Third attempt at a staple coil. The first 2 were atrocious. I can't figure out why there isn't more definition to the staple effect. I used 8 pieces of 0.5x0.1 kanthal ribbon and wrapped it with 36g n80. Staged it with 26g kanthal.

Weird lighting made it all look gold for some reason.

We few are so skilled as to make works of art from wire. Hard & Easy to do. I'm just poor, so I have too.
Some are easy but this and the Alien Clapton variants are the ones my fumbling fingers hate trying to replicate...took me almost 2.5 Hours to make one of these damn coils:

Thats not Ribbon wire...Thats 5 Strands of Flattened 24g Kanthal as the Core

For some reason, I have to try 3 times as hard to make shit work than normal people. But that would be boaring. I like "Lets make one & see if it works"

I know a Dude that makes Electronic Boards by hand. I have seen him do it. Way to painful for me.
I dabble in hardware and script/batch edits for various boards, search my username on google and you'll see some of my work, The one thing that is easier is not needing a magnifying glass for soldering or seeing what goes wrong ;)

This is new. The lock people sent me this. The code for the door lock that was installed today will be active on 11/15/2015. Your lock may not function until that time. Please make sure other locks are in place until we up grade our security software.

I rely on older model Dead-bolts/Chain Sliders and drive a 84 Cadillac Fleetwood Brougham...I dont trust anything for security if it wasn't written, built or installed by me. One reason I dont use OnStar either...You really gotta have faith in those types of companies because with one click or scheduled event you could get remotely hi-jacked or worse...I also carry a Kimber Crimson Carry Ultra for better doorman protection but thats another story ;)

I don't miss surface mount diode soldering. Nothing like targeting the leads on something the size of a pin head with an iron! Coil building is easier on the eyes and with these shaky hands!

You want tc inner wire. To be safe I would use both but the inner wire is what your ohms will read on.

The first Clapton I made I grabbed the Ni200 instead of the nichrome but the core was kanthal so I just ran it in power mode and it was fine I didn't want to put it in temp control until I knew one way or another

I just ordered some 430 stainless in 28 guage. I am going to do a fused clapton with that wrapping in 32 gauge kanthal and run it in TC mode. What temp should I start at? Will snap pics of course but should look like my last round of fused clapton shots. Have to do so few more before I try and alien fc! Hah

I would start around 400/420 and go from there, all depends on your taste and what wire, I like my tc temp usually around 480/515

Have to say this rda was a pleasant surprise running her with dual 24g kanthal coils 12 wraps coming in at .58 ohms
6c5ed1686ad261ad86b445be11387ca5.jpg

I'm really liking this rda it's a cool idea to have the LED's that can be used it the build to make the rda light up but I haven't personally tried them yet. I think they come in blue, red and green

The 430 stainless I ordered in 28 gauge. So that will be my core wires. I will therm fuse with 32 gauge kanthal. I will start around 400 degrees and work my way up! Thanks for the insight!

@Dawn0810 nice build. I dont think I could use that RDA though. It looks like a nipple, the guys at work would have a field day with that. It was bad enough when I had a tube mod. LOL

26g 316 SS 12wraps and a 3mm screwdriver at
.43 ohms running her in temp mode @335 degrees great flavor and I'm using my own juice of frosted cinnamon buns.

When using SS if you don't have the option In your device for SS choose Ti as your coil and the rule of thumb and which I find to be pretty accurate is go 80degrees cooler than your normal temp also I've asked around and everyone has said to use all temp control wires if using in temp control because the core is what gets the power

I loaded the upgrade for ss on my cube 2 as soon as the app worked again.

So even though just the core gets the juice you should wrap in TC wire as well?

Bummer... gonna have to find some 34 or smaller gauge SS...

I'm sorry I have a case of dyslexia apparently I thought you said the core was going to be 24g kanthal but I'd try instead of Clapton just twisting the SS because I did ask a few people and I'm just going by what they said stick to temp control wires but hey try it and let me know because I basically just asked about what you're trying to do with it.
