I see a lot of builds on here with wide SS316L wires, such as framed staple, aliens, quad core fused claptons, the builds are not contact and not spaced. Can anyone using a build like this comment whether or not they're using temp control or not? I'm thinking of getting some wired wire such as the types listed above, but I vape exclusively in TC and have always thought that coils should be spaced for a stable build.

I've gone both ways, but I'm using some flaptons with a little space of late. Thing is, I could care less about TC - I've tried it with DNA200's and a YiHi, and frankly - I prefer Wattage mode.

You vape with SS wire in wattage mode? I thought that because SS is a non-resistance wire, that temp control was a must?

Not even. SS works fine in mechs and wattage mode - Just build your resistance and go. I originally vaped kanthal, but when I realized 28awg SS was calculated at the same resistance I switched - that was... 2? 3? - well, years ago.

You absolutely can NOT use titanium or Ni200 w/o TC - that crap is nasty.

TI and NI, yes that I was aware, I always thought that SS was in the same category. Learn something new every day!

A lot of people use ss in mechs for faster ramp up. Just ohms a little lower so gotta watch that

Put the coil on the mandrel and using your finger nails on the end wraps slowly pull apart a few times until you have a nicely spaced coil. Definitely works better with TC imo.

I know how to space out my coils. My question was that I see people posting pictures of coils with wide wire, such as framed staple, that were not spaced.

When vaping on SS in wattage mode, do you lock resistance on a regulated mod? With the resistance drift in SS wire, it seems that sending a constant wattage to a coil that is changing its resistance would cause issues.

I personally never lock the resistance because the change is minimal.

I've personally seen builds jump from .19 to nearly .35. Nearly double the resistance isn't minimal.

I would guess that maybe there is another issue like a loose screw causing that much of a difference. I have never seen more than like .05Ω change.

Yeah good question since accuracy of the device can also account for such a large change.

I have 2 DNA chipset mods, and a Hohm Slice. I've been using them exclusively in TC, they so far have been very accurate.
The reason I'm asking all these questions, I want to get another mod but there are few that do TC as accurate as DNA chips but the DNAs are really expensive. I have a ton of SS wire and really don't want to buy any Kanthal just for one setup.

I'll have to do some testing today. I'm putting a new build in my Axial, which is on my VT Inbox. I'll try it in wattage mode for S&G's.

You can run SS316L in wattage mode.

Regardless of Temp or Wattage Mode the change in resistance should be the same.

I'm not sure exactly which pics you're speaking of, but a couple things to consider.
Not all, probably not even most, complex builds are used for TC. So spacing or not, is not an issue.

Depending on how complex we're talking about, it's at least as much an art form as it is for actual vaping. Nick Devine, a VERY expert builder whom all other builders know, was asked that question a while back.

"Does anybody actually even vape these incredibly intricate, painstaking and time consuming builds?"

His answer was that his favorite coils for vaping were a lot simpler and the highly complex ones didn't vape as good, but are for the friendly competition and artistry (paraphrase).

agreed. I think that the best vape comes from aliens, fraliens, staggered staple, fused claptons . I never space my coils and am using them in TC on my dna250c right now. Same on the dna250 and the 75c. No issues. To the OP I wouldn't overthink it too much. IMO worrying too much about what you are "supposed" to do (outside of battery safety of course) only limits the possibilities of you finding the best vape for you.

Thanks for putting so clearly, @gsmit1 .

The pictures I refer to, in the Cloud Chasers and Flavor Chasers, and what led me down this train of thought and ultimately this thread, was builders posting pictures of really wide wire builds, stuff like alien and framed staple SS316 wire, in a contact coil build. From everything I've read, for temp control spaced coils are better because you don't have to worry about any hot spots... therefore I assumed these weren't being used in TC... but because SS wire resistance changes when being heated, how were people accounting for that in wattage mode or unregulated devices?

For cheaper tc mods get an Eleaf, Wismec, or Joyetech mod and download arctic fox.

    If you're a tinker, you'll love it.

Make sure you get the latest build and you'll need a PC for the toolbox for sure.

I wish I knew about this firmware before I spent $150 on a Drone and nearly $300 on a Rebel...

I was going to buy a rebel until I talked to a bunch of people on here and was told they have some issues they shouldn't have for the price. $150 on the drone is a good deal. I got a $120 3d printed dna 250c squonk mod, dual 18650 and couldn't be happier. I like it's construction because it lends itself well to taking the squonk bottle out of play and just putting and rta on there as well. It's great.

I don't think it won't look nice, or not be in good condition. The issue I heard about was the battery door not staying on all that well. I hope you don't have that issue because they are really nice looking, but that would drive me absolutely insane if I paid $300 for a mod and they couldn't take the time to get the battery door to stay on properly.

haha I don't need any more mods dude. I've got 6 that I really like, 3 DNA, a couple mechs, and a minikin v2. I don't plan on buying anything for a bit unless I snag a Defiant Designs DS mech squonk.

IIRR you got the 250C Rebel? DNA "C" is my go to for TC. Replay is simple to use and accurate at reproducing a vape. Evolv won't let on how it recreates. They do indicate it does more than just setting the temp.
I use a lot of ss. I haven't tried the spaced/contact using the same build same atty, for the purpose of testing.
If I have room to space it, which is usually at least a little, then I'll space it.

Replay is amazing. It gives a whole new vape that is IMO superior to just regular tc. Don't get me wrong I have an older DNA 250 and run it in tc and IMO that is still better than wattage mode when set up correctly.

I have the therion 75c bf and I wish it was a 2x700, but I have 2 solid batteries I use in it and I get decent battery life out of it. It isn't an all day mod, it is more for at home. Which I don't mind. I roll with my 250c and I'm fine with that.

I got the single battery Rebel because I wanted something small-ish and lightweight, and better battery life than a single 18650. I'd rather have a spare battery on hand than a larger mod.

That's the one I would have got ! A P42A or 40T would be great for that one.
If you like TC you'll love Replay. I'm partial to it for TC and wouldn't by a non C for it.

Yep I bought a quad of 40T's. Mind you the one I got was the single battery version, not the dual.

I have not yet messed around with Replay. I imagine I will at some point.

To set the mod up for use, you can use escribe. There's a couple YT's on it. Easy. If the mod doesn't come with the latest International Firmware version, you'll want to do that first.

It's really easy. You have to download the international version of escribe though and install the patch. From there just set your profile up for replay through the escribe software and start vaping. dial in your settings how you like them and click save puff.
