Well, for once I have something pretty cool planned!

Courtesy of the Vaping Underground I got wind of a new B&M kinda sorta near me if a 45 minute drive counts.

So tomorrow, I am heading to Top Notch Vapors to check them out.

https://www.facebook.com/topnotchvapor/photos_stream

From the pics on FB it looks pretty damn good to me.

So I am bravely venturing from sedate rural traffic though the perils of Columbus, Ohio traffic and armed with a credit card hope to find some vaping bliss!

@Drone is going to come over this weekend and give me a manny petty. She is so gentle with my toes, she does the "this little piggy" song to start things off and makes me giggle every time....Then I'm gonna vape till my wheels fall off. Oh yeah, doing laundry too....

Me, I'm learning my new camera, eating pizza and watching some Nascar. Terribly exciting. ;)

None of it. ;-P

Hell, Kasey Kane is from my state of WA. And, the next race is at Watkin's Glen. In NY.

The old stereotype of Nascar being some hillbilly sport is long-dead man. :)

LOL...I resemble that remark !! (Georgia Boy)

Nothing wrong with that. But Nascar won't survive in the modern media world without a wider viewership and technology.
So, I'm glad it's reaching a wider fan base. Hell, they have UK FB groups for it and show it on Premier Sports over there. :D

It's just fun.

Rain here, too, so looks like I'll be spending time indoors keeping the pup away from the cats and pulling out my hair. That was her cue to bark in my ear.

Taking your credit card hey lol good luck with that.
I'm gonna sit at my desk all weekend, tv on, and tinker and do very little. Might do some experimental cooking.

I gotta go help my friend shoot another wedding. Really friggen not into it anymore. I get to stand around for hours at a big huge party with good tunes blasting and I can't cut loose, grab a drink, & join 'em on the dance floor... Watching other peoples' normal happy life moments wondering when my turn will be to have a normal happy life moment... Not to mention the shit goes sooooo late into the night and I'm just a grumpy old woman who just wants to be home. It's not worth the free meal.. I'd rather be in jammies, eating Cup O' Noodles & watching Mod Envy with my cats on my lap tonight. Yeah, this is the last wedding I'm doing for a while. :)

I want to make a stew today. How do you make it thick without adding flour or gravy granules? I'm not much of a cook btw

Who doesn't love rubber chicken!

Two weddings ago I had a steak taller than my apartment. I shoulda taken a pic. But I'll never forget that steak.
But that was a rarity. Usually it's overdone fatty/gristley prime rib that's cold by the time I get to eat it. And last week NO FRIGGEN HORSERADISH for it, wtf even??

You got any cornstarch or nah? Mix half a small glass of COLD water with a few spoonfuls of cornstarch and slowly stir it into the boiling stew.

That's what I meant by flour actually. I was wondering if there's another way to thicken stuff other than using something fatty?

You could toss in some rice so it will overcook and basically disintegrate?

you can use tapioca powder, if you live in a medium sized city, you can find it in asian markets or the asian isle in your food store. Check the baking isle as well. It is not a fatty substance...it can upset some peoples stomachs and such sometimes if they are not used to it.

you can also boil some lentils, then whip them through a blender till smooth, this is called dahl in India, it will thicken your gravy and add flavor. It is still better than adding flour or cornstarch too. I use Dahl for butter chicken and in curries.

Oh thanks. They're both good ideas guys. I have a cupboard full of rice (microwave rice lol) and our city has all those kind of shops. What's tapioca made from? [edit: ok just google it] We have a large Arabic mart 10 mins walk from here (good music in there too)

I would suggest you use some dahl, flavor is off the hook, and it thickens like crazy. Tapioca is made from a root that was originally found in Brazil and is very popular in south east asian markets for food and drink.

Just as I was thinking to myself arghh he's using ghee he starts saying ghee is fine and you should do regular exercise and not live a sedentary lifestyle :) he kinda read my mind and answered it. But wow. He made making that look easy. My Saturdays are generally filled by watching a lot of cooking programs on tv, youtube, netflix.. I think a walk to the mart is coming up

ghee is a religious thing to the Punjabi and to many Hindu and Indians alike. For making the dahl, I use around a cup of lentils and about two cups of water to boil it in, I strain any water that is left. I put the boiled lentils in a blender and add small amount of water while blending to get a smooth consistency, then I add it to the sauce of choice, nomnomnom. I cook almost all of our meals and i only use whole foods, I have fallen in love with Old Japanese Ramen recipes and Punjabi food. We are a family of Celtic descent, and in our mythology and religions, the Celts were supposed to wander from your tribes and join, teach and marry into other cultures, in order to gift other cultures with our practices and to learn the culture of others as a gift back to those that came before us. We fallow this principle, my whole family tries to speak in multiple languages, eat food from other cultures and experience all that others have to offer....

I'm not that adventerous yet. I'm still learning how to make things thicker. Flavouring is another thing. I really don't like using anything that's high in starch or fat or has any unnecessarily added. Sorry :p I know this is a thread about what we're up to today so I'll make this my last Q. When I've boild a big pot of veg it seems such a waste pouring all that hot water away. I feel like I should do something with it while it's hot and full of the vegetables nutrients. Do people generally just tip it down the sink?

I keep the broths from that sort of thing in a glass bottle to cook other things. Esp. nice for rice or pasta or instead of water in recipes. :)

One of my fave methods of thickening is just reduction. It really concentrates flavors.
If you're making stew, you likely to have potatoes...which are a starch and will thicken things too.

If using meat,a nice sear and braise will leave bits to caramalize and will also thicken a sauce.

I like this recipe, it's slow-cooked and has beer.

Thanks for those links CaFF. Yes I'll look for something to keep the broths in. Funny thing happened. Just before I went out my neighbour came round and she gave me a tin and a packet of lentils. So before I read this I've been tipping out the water and the lentils are thickening it. And using some marmite for flavour. You ever heard of that stuff?

:D I hear Guinness is nice too

Nice bit of serendipity there!

Yeah, I love marmite/vegamite. Can't get it very easily here though. My damn Aussie ex-gf gave me some and nommmm.

Yes, Guinness makes everything better.

mmm Guinness beef stew. Like steak in a glass. Lovely

Well, I probably can find it, it's just not in normal grocery stores. We have all sorts of Ethnic shops and grocers, but UK/AU really isn't included. ;)

I don't go to all the fancy shit like Trader Joe's, World Market and Whole Foods.

Hmm, I wonder if any of the local micro-breweries make it? After all, that is where it comes from eh?

Cornflour mixed with H2O, probably too late for this stew, maybe useful for the next. Pearl Barley also works well,

Wedding cakes are over rated....

I like the home made cakes that look like they have been dropped on the floor where they bake out of the pan because you put to much in. Frosting so thick you have to run your finger through it twice to hit bread. The kind you need 2 big salad spoons to put a peice on your plate because a normal cake spatula is just to big of a pussy to even attempt to move that slice.

You all know exactly what Im talking about.......
