Wicking with kGd

I have been using Koh Gen Doh Japanese cotton since I've started dripping, have'nt tried anything else. I find wicking can be a pain trying to get the right amount. I've been peeling the skin layers off each side and then cutting bout 1/2-1" per coil. I'd like to know do you want it to be slight resistance but still easily slide through, or is it better to have it pretty tight, but still able to move back & forth, ive found if i do slight resistance it spits or pops more then if tighter. How do you guys wick your KGD cotton. Im using a haze rda, 24g, sigelei 150.
