So I picked one of these up for cheap, and as soon as I tried to spool out the wire, the spool itself spun in place and made a gigantic stupid mess. I can't figure out a way to make this not happen, hugely reducing the functionality of this device.
I checked a couple of youtube videos, but while they are idiotic, constantly blowing vapor into the camera, at no point does anyone actually seem to address setting this up.

Anyone have any tips here?

Did you try putting rubber bands around each spool?

Yeah, the fat blue ones on broccoli work best.
See there was a reason your mom told you to eat your broccoli.

Ive got a UD box o wire, and it is kind of a bitch to get them to stay put in the box. What I did personally was pull the wire through the hole and then put a little piece of tape on it to hold it in place, then I set the spool in place in the box insert and just let it go buck wild. It spun and let the tension go. I just made sure the wire didnt go far off the spool left or right. Did that for all the spools and then just took the tape off and put the top insert in and closed it up. The wire stays put ouside the box and with the box closed it doesnt really matter if the spools look unkempt and loose.

+1, try the wore tamers. You can get them in a hobby shop or bead store if you want to shop local.

I put those tamers on all my wire. They work great! You can still use your box... just wrap your spools with the tamers and you can feed the wire thru the box. Get yourself a 10 pack of em and thank me later :)
