I'd like to follow this thread for the same reasons as Matt.

What I do wonder is if some unregulated mods have safety features, for those more used to regulated mods.

For example, a safety switch to prevent auto firing, maybe a fuse, and other things more experienced vapers can suggest.

I only have a FuHattan that I am timid about using, unless in the company of experienced vapers.

As for what to put on top, the Ijoy Unlimited looks easy to wick, sort of an RDTA. I hear Genny's can be a PITA, but an RDA with some tank capacity is interesting. Never got into the motion of dripping, just feels unnatural to me.

@Mattp169, now that I'm not on my phone, let me expand a bit. The construction on the clone is pretty solid and very simple. Strip down and maintenance is very easy and and the performance is quite good. Doesn't feel as nice and the authentic, but at a fraction of the price is not bad at all. I am considering a few more of these for backups should I ever need them.

@mikeyboy74, I'm not an expert in this area, but here is my basic understanding. I have seen a few unregulated boxes with fuses, but commonly they will just have a mosfet protected switch. This doesn't really add anything in the way of safety compared to a straight mech mod. The whole reason they are needed in an unregulated box is because the switches are not rated for the amount of current generated in a mod. This is not a feature that will protect you from doing something stupid. What might be worth looking at is a simpler regulated mod. Something like the Hexohm or similar. These will not have screens outside of a possible voltmeter, but can contain features like reverse polarity protection, on/off switches, and fuses. A few terms to search are OKL-T20, OKL-T10, Raptor 120W, and PWM (Pulse Width Modulation). The chips in these boxes are inexpensive and available for purchase. You could order few to keep as spares should you have one fail and get the mod up and running again.

VaperVenue.com has the MLA Trigger Happy's on sale for $50.00. They're normally $125.00-$150.00. @StereoFreeze turned me onto that sale. They're built like a tank and side firing button is really cool. Not too small, and it hits hard. Super easy to take apart and clean.

Ugh, now I have another thing I have to buy :gaah:, I have the Haze, Theorem and Avocado, those bottom tank/top coil/RDTA/whatchamacallits are nice. They all have their own little quirks, and you do have to tip them upside down sometimes to get juice into the wick but they are nice.

Anyways, for the other question, I can think of one that is an unregulated but protected mod. CF Mod, it's a tube but it has a cutoff fire time, and won't fire below ~.15Ω and will stop firing when the battery is low. But, it gives the no variable controls, just the strait voltage from the battery. I like the little guy and was my travel piece for a long time. No need to worry about any bad things when my brother sits on it (happened more than once).

To Mattp, you already had the dos equis recommended, but give the tres equis a look. If you like the reuleaux design it's very similar and you get an extra battery. It's very easy to take apart and clean, clone is like $25. More battery life and available current but still in a pretty small package for what you're getting. It has a few little quirks but once figured out it's a great toy (I loved the first one I got so much I ordered a second).

How did I forget the Trigger Happy!? Got to be one of the best buys in mech mods right now.

So...I'm the third person to recommend the dos equis clone...I've had mine for over a year...and stripped it down just the 20160202_170310-1.jpg 20160221_180926.jpg once to keep it healthy....

The noisy cricket is an amazing series box, very small and sleek. I know you said parallels, but this is not a bad box for the price.

Third for the Dos Equis and second for the Tres Equis. Both feature simple designs coupled with ease of maintenance.
