Picked up an unregulated box, what am I doing wrong?

Ive been running my RX200 for months now, love it, but wanted to try an unregulated mod. People seem to make them out to be so much better, plus like many have noted, theres a lot less components inside to fail/break.

I have a mod I picked up online from (forget sellers name) but its a unregulated with a mosfet. I am running it with two (authentic) Sony VTC4 30a batteries that were brand new.

The tank is the Ohmega Calypso (Its a monstrous 30mm). I have tried two different dual coil builds. One was just a standard kanthal coil, probably 8 or so wraps, with a total ohm load of (I think it was 1.2?) and a dual but smaller clapton coil build which totals out to .37 ohms. The .37 build will actually get glowing hot on the box mod, but after nearly 10 seconds. On my RX at 75w it takes a matter of 2 seconds tops.

So I wicked it, primed and juiced them, put them on the box, and I get vapor production, but its so underpowered it feels like. I can hold the button, and slowly exhale while it ramps up, and hit it and still its not enough.

I threw it right onto my RX, and half a second after I hit the fire button, its popping like bacon and ready to hit, and its a powerful hit.

What am I doing wrong? I work with a few buddies who vape, and one guy used to run this tank on an unregulated box, and as soon as he'd hit his button, it would be sizzling like my RX.

The box has solid large gauge copper wiring from the batteries, fat daddy 510 connector, etc. All pretty good stuff from what I have read.

Did I just get duked and buy a cheap POS box mod? Lol

is it a series or parallel box?
do you have a picture of it?

You need to build lower on a mosfet protected parallel box mod to get the desired effect.

They aren't "better" but they can potentially last longer.

An RX200 at 75 watts will put out 75 watts steady until the batteries are dead.

An unregulated mod at 0.37 ohms is putting out 47.67 watts at 4.2 volts and then less and less as the batteries drain.

ok, so you want to build it, like you would for a single battery tube mech.

keep in mind ohms law and build safe. also keep in mind ramp up time.
you're firing at 75w, so a 0.37ohm build at 75w is an applied 5.2volts.
you're only firing at 4.2 volts on a fresh charge which is going to equate 47w on that same 0.37 ohm load.

all that mass of metal in your Clapton coil is taking some time to heat up.
look at going to 24g at a 0.2-0.3 ohm load and watch what happens.

also make sure you have all you need to build SAFE
UNDERSTAND ohms law, battery safety, how to build safe, and get an ohm meter.

Gotcha, so unregulated really shines at extremely low builds. The description said it's safe down to (I would have to read it again to double check) but I think it said .06 or .04 builds. I've never went to a .0X before.

I'll look around at some coil building tutorials. (I have the means to build, just not familiar with what's what when actually trying to build to a certain ohm load)

I've been either running my TFV4 with manufactured coils, or using my Avocado 24 and this Ohmega tank with prebuilts I've ordered online, but finally picked up a cool building kit and ohm meter and such.

*Phone auto corrected "coil" to cool lol sorry

check here for some basic ideas on what wire and wrap and check your tube for some tutorials.

just remember you're going to have battery drain and sag; also, watch your current demand on your battery to ensure safety.

good luck, man and congrats on the new mod

umm that's gonna be the mosfet not the battery... super subohm like that is not something I would call safe. youre going into serious red zone terrirtory buddy.
Personally I never drop below 0.17ohms with those same batteries.

Thanks for the heads up. If I can't get a good build around .1 or .2, then ill just stay away from this thing. I like my RX anyways, just wanted to see what the unregulated world was all about.

Thanks for all the tips and links guys, much appreciated!

Try building a nice .2 Ohm Build in the Calypso..26N80 Parallel Dual Coil Build (7 Wraps/3mm ID)
That should living it up and give you the vape your looking for on a Mech

Just got home, built that dual coil build (7 wraps, 3mm ID 24g Kanthal) on my Avacado 24 (Would have used the Ohmega, but I just rebuilt it before this thread, with some claptons, didn't want to waste my last ones)

It came out to .24 ohms, ramp up on my RX at 75w is literally a split second (Of course) but on the box, its only about 2 seconds, so I think this might be the perfect build! Gonna go wick it now and ill post back how I like it. Thanks raymo2u!

Love this build! Its got great cloud production, and the flavor is amazing. Only a second or two ramp up time, and then its good to go for a few hits.

I just added a digital volt meter to the box as well, trying to decide how I want to wire it though, im thinking straight to the battery sled, since theres no master power switch, it'll be a reminder if I have the batteries in or out, plus I can see my resting AND firing voltage.

If you want it to ramp faster and have slightly more heat then add a strand of 26g for Staged Heating....this is popular for us Mech users as it cuts down ramp up and helps the rest of the build, it also gives a smoother draw as its not coming on all at once.
Just take out the build and put it on a bit then wrap the strand tightly between the wraps.
Like this, but instead of just doing wraps in the center of the build like picutred have the wraps on the edges of the build also to keep the resistance up and a smoother draw:
