I've heard amazing things about ultrasonic cleaners. Supposedly 30 mins in one is equivalent to a traditional 1 week steep. And it doubles as a cleaning device for mechs/driptips/whatnot. :)

I hate to admit it, but if I need something in a hurry, I put it in the microwave. Lid off, 15 seconds, shake, cool, vape. The results aren't as good as letting it sit, but it makes things pretty vapable. I don't do it very often though. Usually I have 8 bottles on my desk. 4 are being vaped, 4 are being aged. As I finish a bottle, I go over and make something else and add it to the end of the line.

Does that really work well? Only time I've microwaved anything was to warm up my pg/vg to mix in vanillin.

Try it once Kuraudo. I feel that it works fine in a pinch. I would probably pass on doing this with tobaccos though. I think time is the only way to make those right.

Most plain fruit flavors taste pretty good right away. Creams, bakery, tobaccos, and complex mixes are the things that I like to let steep.

Gotcha. I mostly need desert flavors to steep anyway. I usually just boil some water and let the bottle sit in a bowl of hot water with the cap off for a while then let it sit somewhere dark for a few days, but if microwaving can get me vape-able results in seconds, it's worth a try.

CAW! I never steep in the microwave. That is because of the threat of plastic fumes being dispersed into my e-liquid or solution is too high. If I do use heat I use an old, large, soup can, and use a triple hot tap water bath. I let the e-liquid/solution stay in it until it is cool, remove, shake thoroughly and repeat X 3. I have a DIY recipe that calls for this method. I have heard the Ultasonsics are good for steeping. Otherwise I old school steep. I DO, however, steep any e-liquid, with that "je n'est cest quoi" taste or aroma, without the cap for one day intervals. My rule of thumb re: steeping is: 1.) try from the bottle and if it is a tobacco I like I will steep it. Fruits or other flavors I will vape immediately if they are good. 2.) I have the tendency to old school steep (1 week in a temp controlled environment away from light), cap on, and well shaken daily. To each his own. My experience -without having an Ultrasonic- is most other methods to speed up steeping do not work so well. CAW!

Fruit stuff is usually good to go out of the glorious vape mail package you received. Cremes and other more savory flavors sometimes need a little bit of time. Best thing to do is store the juice in a dark place for a few days to a week. You can do a couple light squeezes vertically to get air out if you have the room for it.

The only time I ever take the top off is if it has a alcholish type of flavor to it.

If in a rush you can shake your bottle and put it in a cup of hot (not scolding) water for a bit with the top off. Don't let water into the juice though for obvious reasons. Repeat this a couple of times if needed as water gets cooled, shaking between each time.

I'll place about 10 bottles next to one of my windows that gets really good sun for at least 60% of the day, for about 2 to 3 months! Los Angeles doesn't get too cold but gets nice and warm, specially now that it's summer!

My steep procedure:

  • Open package and shake
  • If not already in a sealed bag put in two zip-lock bags (in case one leaks). I use a straw to suck the air out.
  • Soak in hot water until water cools then repeat - Shake in between soaks
  • Put in the direct sunlight for a few hours then shake
  • Then I put them in a drawer in the bathroom with the lid off for a few hours
  • Put the lid back on, shake and let sit for a few days or up to a week
  • I will usually give them a shake once or twice a day while sitting if I remember

There is no rule here about threadjacking, so a quick derail. What ultrasonic cleaner do you use / recommend?

I use the microwave method, Only with glass bottles. Be careful, 4 seconds on high will do for a 15 ml glass bottle. Any longer and the liquid will shoot out the top of the bottle. You don't want to cook it. You just want it to get hot. Then shake it for 30 seconds and let cool and shake again.

It's just one from the jewelry dept. nothing expensive. It doesn't have a timer so I can let it go for 30mins no problems, just put hot water in and go

I use my nebula mark VII and fire the ion drive condensing unit.... No really my view is "why hurry greatness" if you have taken the time to make it let it sit and breath once in awhile until it is perfect.

I use an ultrasonic cleaner- the one I like is the Black Hills Gold Source model 890 at amazon - it has a 30 min. timer, I push the button once and walk away, I usually do 6 bottles at a time. the water gets pretty hot (not boiling) but since I use a lot of VG it's a good thing. I don't know if everything is good to vape then and there as a lot sets on a shelf until I get to it

I DIY a lot, but I don't steep. When I mix a bottle, I close it and set it a cup of hot tap water for a couple of minutes. Not to steep, but to warm it enough that the liquid is very runny. Then I shake it well by hand, vape right then and there.

I mix small batches and generally use them within a day or two. Occasionally one sits longer. The only flavors that taste much different to me after "steeping" are some tobaccos and spice flavors. Spices like cinnamon tend to change strength as they age - some stronger, some weaker. Tobaccos seem to get mellower (but I don't mix many tobaccos, so that might just the ones I've used). The nic base you use can also play a role. The lower the nicotine strength and the 'cleaner' that nicotine is, the less time it takes for flavor changes to occur. Steeping a really spicy recipe in peppery-tasting nic can take weeks to get to its final flavor, in my experience.

Ok gang... steeping is something I know well. Im the guy from ECF that nailed down the most used method for crock pot steeping. So rather than heading over to that other vaping forum and reading thru hundreds of pages and thousands of posts on testing using crock pots or UC's Ill keep it simple for you. Also adding some recent scientific tests to my info done by another member of that very forum.

First off those tests. They show that a HEATED UC and crock pot steeping will offer nearly indescernable results in the same amount of time. My advice is if you have a crock pot at home dont run out and buy an ultrasonic cleaner to steep juice. Its just not necessary. Im still waiting on more info regarding nicotine concentration loss when heating juice but it looks to be negligible, if at all, based on the temps we are using. So have at it. Ill update with more info if I find out that changes at all.

So my tried and true, tested for two years and counting method. Also done by many many others with stellar results.

1) Fill crock with hot water to below the level of the neck of your bottles.
2) Put crock on low heat setting to heat up. It should be at or near 150° F for steeping. This is your target temp and what you want to maintain for the duration of your steeping.
3) Mix your juice. I personally use glass boston round dropper bottles.
4) Cap it, hard shake it by hand till mixed thru.
5) Once mixed if you prefer to "off gas" any alc base flavoring or heavy aromas in your juice (liquor flavors or heavy floral scents for example) place it in the crock pot with the cap off for the first hour. Then cap for duration. If thats of no concern, cap it and put your juice in the crock.
6) Let it sit in that crock at 150° for a total of four hours. You can go longer but you will likely find it unnecessary.

This four hours will shave about 2 to 2.5 weeks off your steeping for ANY juice. All tobaccos included. Even the most stubborn of them. Shaking is absolutely unnecessary with this method. The heating causes the juice to mix and all on its own.

Yes, you can put it in the closet for weeks. On a window sill. In a hot car, or even in your bra and itll be just fine.... in time. A crock saves time, and effort. Plus this is a hell of alot easier than dropping bottles in reheated cups of water over, and over, and over again (how I started using my crock was because of that).

Ive been mixing juice over two years. Im a mostly VG guy too btw, 80% VG usually. Its the method I use and Ive used all the others as well. It is the best way to do it.

But, use any method you like and gives results you prefer. I just dont like waiting weeks on my tobacco flavors and I vape alot of them. I used to closet steep when I first started mixing, never again will I do so. Even if I know a juice needs four weeks for full maturity itll still go in the crock for four hours just to shave a couple weeks off it, and it works for that as well.

And no, microwaving juice is a bad idea esp in plastic bottles. More so if the flavoring is a tank cracker containing triacetin, a plasticizer used in making flavorings. Use glass folks. Its better and lasts longer, looks nicer, and preserves juices better.

Have fun!

As you can see there are many ways to do this. As a newbie, you will find which way works best for you in time.

I sometimes steep and sometimes not. Tobaccos always get a steep whether I put it in the UC or I put it on the shelf. If I use my UC, I do so for 4 hours in 30 minute cycles. 30 on and 30 off so steeping this way is a days job. After those 4 hours I let it set for a week. Most of the time I am not in need of it that fast so the shelf works for me now. Good luck to you.

Even a resolute steeper ought to have a little sample right after mixing. If the flavor does indeed change over time, best to know which version you prefer. If it doesn't change over time, you'll know you won't have to wait next time you mix some.

I kinda found this out by accident.

This time of year, seal them up tite, place in the glove compartment of your car and leave them there for 24 hours. You may be surprised.

But since you are not doing this by accident, take them out, and shake them when you are out for a drive.

The only time I ever take the tops off is to get rid of any perfume type flavor and 24 hours will do that. Just make sure they are in a safe place away from kids and pets.

And other vapers of course!

I do the crockpot method as well. I do have a UC but pushing that button every 8 minutes is a pain! I use pretty low flavor percentages, though, so most of my mixes don't need much if any steeping. I do agree that tobacco vapes need the most, but most of my others are ready in a day or two. If I don't want to wait a day or two then I stick them in the crockpot for about 30 minutes (fruit/cream flavors).

Amanda and I were two of the test vapers for the UC vs SC cooker method. Save your money, and get a slow cooker from a thrift store or steal one from someone's grandma.

Like HIC says, test a mix after a good shaking. Otherwise, you won't know if steeping had any effect.

I have two now! I had a bigger one which took up too much counter space, but I recently got a red one for $11 from Target which is much smaller and still fits 30 ml bottles with the lid on. And they both stay at 150 with the lid cracked!

I think steeping is all relative to the amount of flavor % I use almost all FA, So I use a small percentage flavor to base. So for most mixes it's 5 mins in rice and 2 mins on paint shaker. Heat just thins. It is only going to get so thin. Let it clear, Then vape. But for darker mixes I like to do 2 cycles and sit over night.
I think it's everyone's taste buds,Quality of nic and base. That determines personal steep time.

I absolutely agree with you. Most of my recipes don't need steeping, but I do steep my few tobacco mixes.

Mix. Test. Shake. Shake. Usually within 3 to 5 days all flavors come alive for me and friends I mix for. I tell them shake each day. One friend tasted a little each day. On day 5 she said all the flavor appeared!

I'm still not sure whether heating helps or hurts the true flavor. In some ways I think it changes it totally. And unless temp of heating and time is exactly the same each time the mix will be diff each time. Like eating a raw tomato vs cooked.

For me blend, shakity shake. No cook.

Ditto. Yep. That was a great project. Blind testing for those that are not familiar with it. Before this study, I purchased this UC which is currently on sale:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/290604862797?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649

With the shorter basket and properly filled it's just about silent. I sit 6 feet from it and can't hear it. Also the 60 minute timer is great. Using the UC, a few of my mixes need to settle for a day or two after 4-6 hours in the UC. Kinda like scrambled eggs and then let things get back to normal. Of course, if I were new to the issue, I would probably opt for the CP.

I have some very nice juices which I thought turned out wrong or just tasted awful. So I shrugged my shoulders and stored them away thinking one day someone else might come along and like them. Months later many of them now taste good so I'm glad I kept them. But some are now much higher than my nic level. Do you think that nicotine itself requires steeping? If not then if making large amounts it might be better to wait until you vape to add the nic.

Ok thanks. Do you think adding more pg vg much later on can ruin it or would it go through the steeping process once again? I have to admit I've stuck to the same juice making method for two years without any alteration to my technique other than less nic and more flavour. Well, maybe more vg too
