1st DIY - Tweak Advice

Hi Folks,

Y'all got me started on DIY and hopefully someone can point me in the right direction.

I made my first batch 8 days ago and am totally shocked at how well it turned out. Thought their would be some serious trial and error...maybe that comes later ;)

Mixing by weight (thanks for that) and followed a couple of simple recipes from ELR:

http://e-liquid-recipes.com/recipe/104221/Mustard+Milk+-+Simple+Strawberries+and+Cream

This one is good....will try some other similar recipes as I like a bit more fruity/tangy type flavor for this type of vape. But still a winner.

My biggest fear in not being able to purchase any more juice shipped to my state as of 7/1 was/is RY4...RY4 from Mr. Vape and then Ohm's has been my ADV for the past three years since I started vaping and has been a big contributor to 3 years of no stinkies. I was informed over at the "other" site that I should just purchase as much commercial RY4 as I can because I will never be able to duplicate it. Well booey on that! (PS---80%+ of vendors still ship to my state although I don't know if there is any additional enforcement with the various age verification services after 8/8. Don't plan on any more commercial juice purchases anyways.)

Anyways, I tried this one as a 1st stab at an RY4 type vape:

http://e-liquid-recipes.com/recipe/202670/Custard+King

After a week steep time, it is freaking delicious. I feel like a boy again with a cool new hobby this is so fun!

All of the RY4 flavor notes are there, I mixed it at 6mg 70VG/30PG and it has that nice bit of throat hit I so love. This juice tastes EXACTLY like the RY4 from Verde Valley Vapes. I think they used the same recipe as I cannot tell a difference at all.

Here is what I need advice on:

The caramel flavor is heavier than I prefer. Not overwhelmingly so, just subtly more caramel than I prefer.

Any advice on flattening out the caramel....Add some vanilla, EM, or AP? Being that I am trying to follow the recipe exactly (with good success) I am not sure what to try.

Thanks in advance for any advice. I think Rocket Puppy's RY4 will be the next one to try but this Custard King is sooooo close to what I like I kind of want to tweak it if possible.

Did I mention that DIY is seriously, seriously FUN!

Glad you're enjoying it! Oh yeah, RP's recipe is really good, and I'm really not into tobacco types at all. Can't remember off the top of my head if she added more caramel, so you can leave it out, if so. I don't normally do AP, but it works in her recipe. A tiny bit, like less than 1% of EM might smooth RY4 out for you some. Try it out in a small sample size and see if that works, maybe.

Glad you're enjoying yourself. Mixing already created recipes helped me out a ton when I started out.

to me FA's Burley remind's me of ry4 without any sweet and a bit stronger.. i like the caramel of the ry4 but if I was gonna 'tame' it .. i'd start by cutting the ry4 by 1% and adding .5% FA Burley.. then re assess . Might only need .25 burley or may need to go higher etc.. ymmv

RY4 mixes are a great way to break into DIY imo, as the TFA RY4 Double is a fairly easy, forgiving, and flexible base flavor to work from. My first 6 months was pretty much spent exclusively trying to perfect countless versions...the worst of which all still came out vapable at worst :).

Like you i initially struggled with a "too much caramel taste" issue. A longer then one week steep time there will tone it down some though, or maybe adding in a speed steep on top if you can. My own preference on the latter there used to be mix, sit with the cap off overnight , then 3 hours in the ultrasonic cleaner or crock pot. 5-7 days latter...good to go.

Adding additional flavors that both fit your own taste profile and make the vape more "complex" can help as well. My advice is don't be afraid to experiment. As you advance in your DIY what you think you love now can and will get a lot better. I haven't vaped RY4 much over the last year, but I made one of my last versions I was pretty satisfied with public to give you a general idea:

Hell, i even kept the extra caramel to round it off in that lol. Basically was a frankenstein'd version of RP's (aimed at replicating portions of what i previously liked about other popular vendor bought RY4's) , which is also good in it's own right as well.

son of a gun!! @Huckleberried - you called that one! ... I had completely forgotten that caramel was added in.. makes the whole "less caramel" question mute i guess... funny thing is I had just made up a batch of this a couple weeks ago and didn't even recall that it was there ;p

8% for TFA RY4 Dbl seems high to me.
I'd actually try 5-6% instead, as RP's version is using just 5% and it's quite good.
And yes, a longer steep may also help.

Thanks for all the advice folks. I am just ecstatic that I made not only vape-able but decent juice by following a couple of recipes! Quite enlightening.

Going to try RocketPuppy's recipe this weekend. I see the version on this website and she posted a newer one on e-liquid-recipes.com. Going to have to read the thread here to decide which one to use.

I think the comments about the % of RY4 Double are spot on. When I purchase commercial fresh made RY4 it takes a couple of weeks to go from clearish to a dark amber color. The Custard King recipe went from clearish to dark amber in just 3 days. It is probably the level of this flavoring that is causing me to think too much caramel when that may or may not be the case. When I make it again, I will try it with 6% but I am just going to follow recipes as written for awhile to avoid discouragement ;) Gotta get my "sea legs" before I try to tweak things on my own.

Huckleberried, Here is a link:

http://e-liquid-recipes.com/recipe/110767/RocketPuppy%27s+RY4+

The only difference I can see is FA Vanilla Classic instead of Vanilla Bourbon. The date on that link is older than some of her posts on the thread here. I think I will make the recipe here as I am not sure that the one one e-liquid-recipes was posted by the real RocketPuppy.
Ohhh. Well she and I did a flavor swap some time back and she mixed up the vanilla bourbon one and surprised me with it, LOL. I was happily surprised how much I REALLY enjoyed it. I never bought that because of it's tobacco rep. I hope you enjoy as much as most here, that have mixed it.
