Johns Hopkins Physician and Vaping Opponent Urges Parents to Lie to their Kids About the Hazards of

Unfortunate. I have been using the Johns Hopkins system for all of my health care needs for the past 15 years. About 3 1/2 years ago, my doctor gave me a referral to the pulmonary specialist for a lung function test. I never went. Instead, I quit smoking and started vaping. Just a few short weeks ago, I had a physical. My doctor listened to my lungs, and asked me when I had quit smoking. I told him 3 years ago on my birthday (which was an exaggeration by about 6 months). He said that he was amazed that my lungs sounded so much better. He asked why I never went to the pulmonary specialist and I told him that I didn't need to spend a bunch of money to find out that smoking was messing up my lungs. He asked how I quit, and I told him that I used e-cigs. He asked if I still did, and I said occasionally if I felt the overwhelming urge to have a cigarette. He turned around and got on the computer, and said, "I guess we can take this smoker status off now.". So... It appears that some of them haven't gotten the message, but the physician discussed in the article works with child care. He has limited exposure to adults suffering the effects of smoking. Given his lack of experience in the area, he should have just kept his yap shut instead of sounding like the uninformed dolt that he is...

That seems to be OVERWHELMINGLY the case, with doctors, "public health", and then idiots like Glantz et al, who don't really know ANYTHING AT ALL about vaping, but feel competent to offer their massively uninformed opinions. It's GOT TO BE the case that someone, I'd guess someone involved with BP, is PAYING these clueless idiots to spout their ignorant drivel. BP, because they've got the deepest pockets, and the most to lose -- sales of their wildly ineffective NRT products, AND sales of drugs for cancer, COPD, asthma, etc. I simply don't see BT as being our biggest enemy in this; they're a competitor, certainly, and definitely not shy about playing dirty (collaborating with the FDA to make closed-system vaping the standard, for example), but BP and the gov't itself are our biggest enemies.

The only thing that surprises me about this is that the physician in question openly encouraged lying. But, I am unfortunately familiar with a particular pediatrician in the practice we go to who is of this ilk. Her particular abrasive expertise is in condescending to "you people" (yes, she said that, and is of a very recognizable religion to which we do not belong), and telling pre and peri adolescent girls that kissing can get them pregnant. My daughter thinks she's retarded. I wonder how the hell she ever got a license. We request anyone but her when we go now, after seeing her three times.

They need a younger audience to carry on with anti vaping campaign. Hard to believe people like this hold the positions the have.

Shit like this makes me so glad for the reasonably competent doc I've seen for the last 19 yrs. I dread the day he retires, and I have to start seeing some young turk who'll think I'm stupid just because I may be 30 yrs older than he is. I started to say "he/she" but I mostly steer clear of female MDs, the chips on their shoulders get in the way of good medicine.

Nah..I'm not going to do that I tell my daughter the truth...the Fedral goverment is fucking evil, and the people who work for the goverment are mentally ill who get their twisted rocks off by inclicting pain on innocent people, and whose deformed souls are terrified of other humans being free.

This reminds me of growing up in the 60s and my parents, schools and church lied about a certain subject we are not supposed to talk about on VU.

That was a terrible mistake on their part and led to many years of problems of me as a teenager and young adult.

I never lied to my kids about adult topics and I'll tell you what, they had a much easier time of facing reality than I did...

Ditto, and likewise. I even finished my son's education about "the facts of life" (about how that "seed" got in there) when he was 7, because he was hanging around with 9-10 yr olds, and I didn't want them telling him *wrong* shit and messing him up for life. My mother was APPALLED. Then when he was 14-15 and reading some adult-level book, my mom's all "but there's SEX in there!" He just looked at her and said "I know what it is, grammy." :giggle:

As for that stuff we can't mention...his opinion? "It smells like ASS." :giggle: :giggle: :giggle:

Yeah, isn't it amazing what openness, honesty, and above all, a principled moral stance that you don't hypocritically disregard, can do?

This post reaffirms just how dishonest the ANTZ posse is.

We all know they lie and distort the truth about vaping, and to have one of them encouraging adults to lie to children shows how low and misguided they are and how their morals and ethics are almost nonexistent.

Right, then when you figure out they were lying about that one thing you think "Fuck it, they must have been lying about everything else too"
Then you end up with a "monkey on your back" for a decade.
The fucking D.A.R.E. program pretty much took ten years of my life.

Same story, I was already old enough to be an addict by the time DARE came along but the exact same kind of crap.

I fought with the schools to keep my kids out of DARE.

I read an article a few yrs back that said that kids exposed to D.A.R.E. were TWICE AS LIKELY to use drugs as kids who weren't. Thank god, I don't think our son is amongst them.

It's like those misguided "virginity pledge" numbskulls.

That one big study they did on those poor kids found that they did hold out on having sex later than their no-pledge counterparts, but that when they did have sex they did so unsafely, and had incredibly higher rates of STDs and unintended pregnancies.

Withholding information from kids is on par with lying to them. The consequences are devastating and can be very long-lasting.

That would be because they lied to us saying that the green substance was just as bad as the hard stuff.
Then we got to high school, found out they were lying about the green stuff, and then figured they were lying about everything else.
BAM! - A decade wasted to addiction.
Bam! - Close to a dozen people from the neighborhood dead from OD's in a decade.

Bam! - 10 - 15 year prison sentences for childhood best friends and cousins.

Yes, exactly; when you tell young girls that "good girls don't", so they don't need to go on the pill or have access to condoms, naturally they wind up pregnant and often diseased. Because hormones don't give a shit about "good".

I instructed my husband, when our son turned 16, to put a supply of condoms in the bathroom drawer, and instruct our son to take as many as he'd like, because we cared far more about his health and future than whether or not he was sexually active. When he was 18 and informed us that he was "maybe gay, or at least bi", I was even more glad of that decision to provide him the means of safe sex. Whatever he decides, at least he won't die of it.
