Comercial smoke alarms

I see why people set them off in Hotels but not at home. Residential ones are tuned to go off with more smoke present. Which quite frankly is dangerous. So I went ahead and installed commercial units with micro processor controlled dual sensors. Photo and ion. The Photo is what is going off of course. They are monitored but luckily I have them in test mode so as not to notify the alarm company to call the FD. Unfortunately from 30 feet away they go off in 20 seconds. they are interconnected so you can imagine the noise. Now i am relegated to vaping in the bathroom with the fan on. You do not put smokies in a bathroom but there is a heat sensor. That is unaffected. I feel much safer with these but of course they are inconvenient for my "hobby". On the other hand I feel they are a darn good idea. Fires are no laughing matter. It goes to show a residential unit never went off the commercial units must meet different standards and go off almost instantly even if i am not right near them. I can deal with it because i feel it is worth my life. Most homes do not have these so they do not go off but if there was a real fire they can take up to 15 minutes to go off and that can mean your life. So i am just pointing out this is why they go off in Hotels but not in most homes. On the positive side at least an Ecig is not "lit" like an analog. Which is how many tragedies occur in the first place. So even though now I have caused my self a nuisance Ecigs are still safer in that respect. Just another reason to be pro ecig. In fact I would think of all people the FD would get behind them. Safe for your health or not they are much less likely to cause a fire. Just a pain in the ass for me now but I am glad I went and did this quite frankly. I just found it very interesting the difference. Residential units may alarm much too late.

Not a bad idea unless I forget the fucking thing which is inevitable. Do not ever do that in a public place! Tampering with public fire equipment is a jailable offense. Plus if you do it in your residence it voids your insurance policy.

Okay, I have to admit you are probably much smarter than me. I would never have thought of that. It is a great idea. Thank you

:teehee: No, I just use the hell out of them. Hope it works out for you! Oh, hey. Put one on the back of your front door, too. That way, when you leave the house, gentle reminder. ;)

I'd be smart if I had created post its!

Not sure down there, but here in Canada, we can get both type for residential.
Photo type are more expensive, better for smoldering fires, less issues with false alarms from bathroom steam etc,
Ion type are cheaper, better for flaming fires, but can be triggered by kitchen/bath steam and such.

Im curious then, that it's the photo section thats triggering from your vape ? Is there an indicator that shows which section triggered ?
We usually compare vaping to steam/fog, so I would have thought an ion type would trigger sooner.
What are you vaping ? A diff juice may not trigger it as much ?

Thanks for posting this though.. I felt bold enough vaping in a no-smoking (and no vaping!) hotel recently, figuring that hey I wasnt smoking.. man I would have SMP (shat my pants) had the entire hotel been evac'd due to my vaping.. lmao. Maybe a shower cap and good reminder system is best, yep.

That's got to be annoying :( . I agree though better safe than sorry. I must not vape much, I've vaped in several hotel rooms without issue (would assume they're using commercial devices). I've also vaped at my neighbor's which had me a bit nervous since they just had all new alarms/sensors installed. Something like 8 of them (in a single wide mobile). 2 of them in the kitchen which is maybe 10x10, they have the ion whatever it's called, the photo sensors, co2 sensors, the whole works. I've never set off the alarms there sitting around bs'ing for a few hours at the kitchen table.

Maybe a reverse water pipe for the exhale? Lol. Blow the vapor into the pipe and let it get trapped in the water.
