Building lower gauge coils

Hello all,

I got my first dripper and am loving it (plume veil clone), however I tried to build with my 24 gauge and it takes forever to heat up (dual 4 wraps with .17 and 6 wraps with .27). I vaped at 30 wats on a Cana RDA30 and with a panzer mech with a 3.7V YTC4.

My question is, does anybody out there vape under 28 gauge while being able to get the near instant heat? If so, what is your build?

Sounds like you have connection issue or weak battery. Those should heat very quickly. Check your screws in your post maybe they are a little loose. Are you using a 510ohm reader? If so does it hold on your value or jump around. If it jumps around issue is in the atty. If it holds true then maybe your battery needs charged or the contact pin needs adjusting. Good luck.

I vape all my dual-coil drippers with 34 gauge kanthal: two coils, 7.5 turns over 2.5 mm silica rope, yield around 1.6 ohm. At 13W, flavor production is great and vapor production is good - without being fabulous, but I'm not a cloud-chaser.

The real problem with thin-gauge wire is, if your atty has posts with a hole that goes through them, you have to be very, very careful not to cut the wire by tightening the screws too hard. I much prefer posts onto which you have to loop the lead around the screw because of that.

The resistance doesn't jump on the ohm reader. I've been thinking of getting a voltage meter that I have seen on youtube that attaches between the mod and the post. May be worth while. The screws aren't loose. The Plume Veil clone I have is awesome, tho it took 3 trips back to the store for replacement pieces... The battery was fully charged and I tries 3 different ones so if it should heat up quickly then I imagine it is the panzer mod.

Thanks.

24 will take longer to heat up unless your running high power but even then it will still take longer than 26, 28, 30 or 32 , most live with it and if your mod doesn't have an automatic cutoff feature it's no big deal.

24 gauge should last a very long time once your satisfied with the results , just burn off the crud and re wick every now and then.

Thanks VH. Puts my mind at ease. Do you have any recommended builds for 24 for me to experiment with?

Sorry i don't , i rarely if ever go below 28 , no matter what type of coil i wind if the ohm's are similar it performs similar , fancy looking or not .

It just takes a lot of experimentation to see what you like , some like dual coil builds and low ohm's , i tend to like simple single coils and ohm builds above 1.2

Running dual 22gauge 6wraps. Puts me at .21ohms. Mine heats up extremely fast. I feel like you have a connection issue. Your 30 watt device is going to heat up slower than your panzer because it's limited at 30 watts output power. If you check on ohms law. Your gonna be at close to triple that power in your panzer depending charge of battery and your device's voltage drop. Is this your first mechanical mod? Do you know how to adjust your 510 pin at atty and then adjust for battery rattle. Is you mod getting hot as your trying to fire it?

It is my first mech. I adjusted the pin so the battery doesn't shake. The mod isn't getting hot, however the coils do after a little bit. Since I'm running at .27 resistance with 3.7V I think it should be around 50 watts output. I am considering returning the panzer and picking up a 50-100W regulated device.

My first experience with my panzer was similar, I ended up figuring out that I could take the top off and with my finger push up the pin and the screw on my atty to make a good connection.

I have the new sigelei 100 watt and my wife has the ipv2 that is 50 watts, we both vape off of 24gauge at 40 watts and the coils heat up instantly. I have both our devices built at .25 ohm with dual coils. I do 6 wraps a piece on a 3/32 drill bit. This is one of our favorite builds.

Well at least you got the more powerful mod , i'm sure your wife will be happy with the underpowered 50 watter lol.

Well I took back my panzer and got some awesome juice (Thunderhead Vapor for those in Washington). Ordered the sigeli 100 watt. I doubt I'll go above 50 any time soon except to play, but it was $20 more than an ipv2 and I don't like the look of the touch button on the ipv2. Thanks people. Appreciate the guidance.

she is begging for the sigelei. It is a great box mod. Love the battery life and the
huge fire button. I also like the battery compartment over the ivp's. I have two
panasonic batteries in it at .25 at 40 watts, and i am able two get about 10 hrs
of solid vape time.

I'm running dual 10 wraps of 22ga. Takes a moment to hear, but flavor is awesome

Just got my sigelei 100W. Did 6 wraps vertical dual coil, at 75 watts it heats write up. Getting a lot more vape with the 24 gauge. Looking forward to playing with the thicker stuff.

With a mech at 0.17 you shouldn't have any problems but with a regulated device there is no reason to sub ohm.
Most regulated devices can't go really low and as you get closer to the lower limit the wattage it is able to deliver drops.
30W at 0.17 ohm and 30W at 1.7 ohm is still the same 30W.

I ordered a 510 connection voltage meter so the next time I look for a mech I can check the voltage drop off. I would like to have on, but at this point I just don't need it.
