Giving up on RTA, moving to RDA

Hi, I have been vaping on a griffin 25 RTA for about 6 months and just can't seem to get the wicking quite right. It is very fiddly to work with and I am ready to move to an RDA because it is so much easier to build on.

Can anyone please offer sone suggestions?

I was thinking of moving to a squonker so I can retain the tank or possibly an rda with a large juice well if anyone can offer any suggestions.

Dont' give up on ALL RTA attys ... I feel your pain on the Griffin 25 (non plus) ... however they have redesigned the atty and called it the PLUS version to fix the serious design flaw.

And that is why I traded mine off.

I have since purchased multiple different RTA attys and have been happy with all of them. The Griffin 25 was the bane of my existence I think.

Look into the GeekVape Avocado 24 RDTA -- This atty has gotten a lot of praise.
It's on my list to get on my next spending spree. I traded for a Limitless RDTA. Very very similar.

And I'm now a happy squonker. I DO keep buying new bottom-feed RDA's for fun, but several of them would be fine as everyday all day vapes.

But I'm also happy with the vape on a mech - I use 1-battery mech squonkers. If you want TC, or high watts, I can't really advise...

For the kind of gear I use, a great bargain to start is the Coppervape mod - if you can buy from Fasttech or other chinese sites, it's a mech squonker that works well and feels solid, for under $30.
Then for a squonking RDA, you could get a clone there too - some popular ones are the
0-16 Origen Little (very tiny, great for restricted lung hit and intense flavor. Not good for "big wire")
Narda (great flavor atty, may whistle)
Hadaly (a LITTLE more air than Narda, another good one)

Depends on if you like flavor or huge clouds.
Tsunami has a squonk 510 pin available. I think, I read, it comes with the Tsunami 24 RDA
I like MutationX for huge clouds, but they are temperamental to drip and keep the cotton off the air holes.
A So Horney RDA or Clone is a beast for clouds. 2 post, 3 holes per post, It will hold 6 parallel coils, but of course, you can use 2 just as easily and have options on how high you want your coil to set. I'm not sure if you can squonk on it though, I haven't checked.

Flavour and clouds. I like a tighter airflow though, the griffin seemed yo airey for me. I would like to have a similar airflow to what I had on my aspire triton tank. Not a fan of wide bore drip tips.

You might want to try a Geekvape Ammit. I have two of them and really really really like them. Restrictive airflow compared to a Griffin 25 and the Herakles RTA-2. Single coil deck, but can support a large coil build. Wicking is fairly simple (IMO) ... some seem to have issues with it. For me it was simple after fighting the Griffin 25 for weeks.

I agree with the Avocado 24. I have 2 of them. It is just like a RDA with enormous drip well that you can see through. Love mine.

Squonking can be a real game-changer for a lot of folks

The suggestion for a CopperVape mech is great - if you are into mechs. If you want regulated, the Wraith by Council of Vapor is nice in the lower priced, regulated department. If you want higher end, VT75 is nice. I do not have experience with any of the other regulated squonkers on the market. The Kanger 160 is a popular choice for a first regulated squonk, but I can't personally give any advice on it EXCEPT: Most squonkers (me included) find that the atties that come with squonkers are not that great.

Fortunately for all of us, 2016 saw an explosion of squonk (sometimes called BF for bottom feed) atties hit the market in all price ranges and there is something for everyone's vaping style

Id put my Billow v3 plus up against an RDA for flavor and clouds...Best dual coil RTA ive personally used to date..Simple wicking..huge and simple build deck for what ever coil you want...Don't give up on an RTA till you've tried this one.

The Origen Little is pretty good for MTL - authentic and clones available. Of course, the authentics are like $100 US, but the clones from China are around $10 and vape very nicely. I'm using one in my rotation tonight, actually

As mentioned above, don't give up on the RTA's. I have the newer Limitless RDTA Classic and I like it just as much as my Buddha Zephyr. It's simple to wick no leak's, it hits butter smooth, has excellent flavor and a very respectable vapor production. And for the price, you can't beat it with everything it includes and the available optional build decks.

I don't know of any that aren't custom made = BIG bucks - except Sonar here.

Got a kick ass little series from this lot. But he does all kinds of custom work at amazingly low prices. I also have a single of his from another batch.

NP, just wondering. I do have a FrankenSkull Clone I bought on a whim coming in, thought I'd try seeing what all this squonking thing is all about. I've got a Hadaly, Narda, Velocity 2 and Split Addy that all have the bottom pins for bottom feeders and the clone was cheap.

I was really bored and watched one of those Vape chat things (rather boring actually) and they mentioned they predicted 2017 was going to be a lot of squonkers coming to market. That (which they didn't like) and a lot of touch screen regulated mod's.

I'll be posting a review of the griffin 25+ this week on my youtube channel that includes a wicking tutorial of it. It'll be a little different then the non plus version but should work the same with the same concept behind it

I bought the geek vape ammit tank and a geekvape tsunami RDA. I have been using the tsunami for a while and I love it, no dry hits at all. I have yet to try the ammit but will do soon because it is a chore to drip outside of home.

Great post man thank you - I am honestly so curious about squonking that I had to ask - is the advantage of squonking vs. a regular drip RDA and bulk of an RDTA that you don't have to constantly physically drip the juice on the wick? Instead, you pre fill the provided squeeze bottle with desired juice, put that in, attach your atty and your good to go until the bottle is empty? One more question, lol I promise When using an appropriate squonk RDA, do you just build dual coils and wick them just like you would any build or do you need to build your coils or wick it differently for the bottom juice flow? Thanks so much man and if you get the chance to respond whenever I would appreciate it! Thanks again for the quality posts!m too!

Hey! Please tell me you still have that Griffin 25. I was taught a cool little trick that has made the Griffin 25 my favorite RDTA. If your looking for a smooth hitting, cloud chucking beast with one of the top flavor/taste rated RDTA out there. But have do you leave the silver O ring on right? The "O" ring that screws down around the velocity deck posts goes on first. Then, install either one (just because Geekvape gives that awesome rubber piece to go solo coil) or two coils, tighten them on the sides of the posts after you size and clip the leads then your ready to wick! I wet the front and spin it into a point and lead it through the coil, grab it with the tweezers and continue to turn as you pull through. Then just pull enough cotton through to where it hangs down to that silver "O" rims. Then, take your tweezers and grab the tip of the wick and tuck it into the indent created already for the wick. Since, the ring is already screwed down and tight you can tuck the wick ends into the "O" ring. Repeat on the other side. Then prime the cotton (I soak it) and then screw the Griffin back together. THIS IS ESSENTIAL; The RDTA is designed with FOUR juice holes that open and close by turning the tank portion. Make sure to have them closed when filling the tank, and then when your ready to vape, turn the tank a quarter to open the juice doors and let it flow! *Tip; Keep the juice doors closed when not in use to maximize the amount of juice you have. This is crazy beneficial for taste and cloud production by allowing that bottom airflow design to really regulate (on a regulated box mod) vape production/quality through the coil build and wattage. I LOVE my Griffin 25. I've yet to try the limitless line yet but that RDTA is top of the line. I hope this helps!

That is the beauty of squonking, all the flavor of dripping with the convenience of a tank. I have 10 squonk boxes and run standard single wire coils and fused claptons. I wick so the cotton is just touching the bottom of the deck and squonk as needed.

I'm in a car a lot for work so with my squonkers I get to drip while driving

Previous posts nailed it - the "pure" flavor of dripping, but with an onboard juice supply.
Also, building and wicking is more "forgiving" than a tank - you don't leak or gurgle or flood from a slight wicking difference, you just maybe squonk a little more often...
And yes - in general, it's less wick than other methods - because you can re-wet the wick with a squeeze, you don't need a lot of wick to "store" juice really, or (with most good bottom feed RDAs) to act as a "dam" to keep juice from an airhole.
For instance, often, my wick is "wispy" and just enough to kind of lie on the deck...

A good place to start looking for what kind of squonk set up is right for you is to look at what your favorite set up you are using now

You can get squonking in just about all price ranges right now - you don't have to spend big bucks to get started like the old days

A lot of folks like the Kanger 160 around here - didn't know they were putting out a 200W

The only thing I'd look at is replacing the stock atty - most folks have not like the Kanger atties - but for $10 you can get a decent bf clone on FT to suit just about any vaping style

I don't know about the Kanger 200, but the 160 is made for 22 mm attys. A 24 mm has some overhang if that bugs you...
