SMOK Alien any good for SS316L TC vaping?

Hey guys,

Newbie here. I have spent the better part of the last month reading about various subjects of vaping, box mods, TC, coils, tutorial etc... There is so much information available and it's hard to get a hang of everything. But back to the main topic of my thread.

My current set-up is a SMOK Alien 220W with an Aspire Cleito w/ .4omh coils. I am buying a Recoil RDA tomorrow from the local shop. I plan on using dual pre-made Kanthal A1 Clapton coils from Geekvape to begin with as they are available at my local shop for a decent price. This will be my first time setting up coils and wicks in an RDA. Hell, it'll be my first time using an RDA. Now I understand these coils aren't for TC but it is just to get a hang on setting up the coils, wicking and the whole RDA experience. I have read a whole lot about TC and I am eager to try it out asap. I plan on buying a spool of SS316L, possibly 24ga or 26ga, doing simple 8-10 wraps coils around a 2,5mm bit and trying it out. As I get better at it, I'll try myself at building SS316L Fused Claptons coils. I have heard good things about SS and TC which is why I've decided to try it out.

Like I said above, I currently use a SMOK Alien box mod and I have read that basically it doesn't do a good job with SS coils in TC. Is this (still) true? From what I read, people have had to set a very high TCR to get it to work decently and even then, most went over to a DNA 200 chip based box mod and kept the Alien for regular VW vaping. I should mention that I have the VB1.0.2 version of the Alien.

So what are your thoughts on that? Should I look into getting a new box mod if I plan on using SS316L based coils? If so, which one should I look into? I use LG HG2 batteries, if that makes a difference and I'd rather use a box mod that supports interchangeable 18650s.

Any help and/or recommendations are much appreciated! Thanks

You have the B version, I have the A so not sure how it would be different. I was really disappointed with firmware 1.2.2 and SS316L TC but the new 1.2.11 so far is an improvement.

The problem with the last update was either the vape was anemic or too hot, no consistency with SS316L. SS304 was actually a good vape with the TCR set to .00105

I would say give it a shot, just remember to set the TCR to .00092 for SS316. If it it give a choppy vape then do a firmware update but make sure you use the B version, not the A version, Smok has both. I would recommend watching DJLsb vapes youtube video on the Alien that includes a tutorial on the proper way to upgrade the firmware.

I would add also that even though the TC is improved it is lacking compared to a DNA250 or Hohmtech G2 or Slice. So far the Snow Wolf 200W Plus and the Battlestar also do a better job at SS316L TC than the Alien, just shy of the DNA250 or Hohmtech mods though.

I've been using mine with a pair of SS316L triple-fused 28/38 claptons @0.22 ohms in my cloud beast. It's really good when it's good, but it isn't terribly consistent. I find myself adjusting it a few times throughout the day.

I also put a 28/38 single clapton @0.7 ohms in my wife's subtank rba, and it is smooth as silk all day long.

It's worth trying, IMO. And you can still vape the SS coils in Watt mode, if TC doesn't please you.

I'm using the original 1.2.1 version, btw.

Tc seems to be working fine on mine, vaping at 330F with 38w on ss316L dual coils. Using 26g 4mm 6 wraps on each coil. My firmware is vb1.0.2 out of the box, no updates applied.

This problem, the anemic or too hot vape is exactly what I've been reading around which is my concern. Oh and the VB1.0.2 version of the Alien is the latest. I guess I'll just have to try it and see. Thanks for the reply!

The Battlestar was one I was really considering at the time of buying the Alien. But now that I have the Alien, regardless if it it'll do fine or not with SS316L, it makes no sense to me to buy the Battlestar. I have been looking at the VaporShark and Lavabox DNA200 but I had never heard of the Hohmtech G2 or Slice. These Hohmtech definitely looks like a solid performers. Will have to read reviews about it! As for the Lost Vape Triade DNA 250, it also looks interesting. Although I will have to find myself batteries with no button top as those are incompatible with the mod apparently. Thanks for the recommendations, I will definitely look into those!

I will definitely give it a try. Out of curiosity, you say you ''find yourself adjusting it a few times throughout the day'', what exactly do you mean by that? Resetting the TCR? The Temp/W on the mod or something else? Thanks for the reply!

Maybe the problems that people were having that I've seen online were with the first version of the Alien. I also have the VB1.0.2 which was out of the box also. I will definitely give it a try and see what goes. Thanks!

Usually just the temp, but sometimes the tcr. Maybe the temp is due to the ambient temp change after letting the mod sit for awhile. No biggie, though.
I had to drop the tcr down to .00075 once, for some unknown reason. Then had to change it back to .00092 later after a refill.
It's never gone bananas and tried to cook my tongue or anything though.
It has held true all day many times. I think changes in ambient temp affect it more than they should, but I'm no expert. Just relaying my personal experiences.

I really like the Battlestar but yeah, if you already have the Alien then it's not a huge upgrade.

As far as the DNA'S the 200 and 250 are the boards to get, the 75 is a real step down unless your a MTL vaper. The DNA 133 and 166 or 167 are DNA 200 and 250 boards but with 2 18650 instead or 3 or a lipo. Same performance but less power.

The G2 and Slice are both excellent but not as pretty as a lot of DNA mods. The performance is excellent though and does TC on ANY metal. What I really like is you can fine tune your vape on the mod, no need to connect to a PC. These are the mods that got me hooked on TC, they are in TC mode 100% of the time. Most of my other mods are in power mode which is my preferred vape most of the time.

That makes sense. I'll have to try it to know how it performs. Thanks for the replies!

After much reading online and such, I decided to grab myself a Lost Vape Therion DNA167 :) It has the ''new'' DNA250 chip and all the goodies. And it looks and probably feels way better in the hand than a G2. The Slice is nice but looks funky and I don't like that I'll have to buy 26650. I don't mind having to plus it on my PC to tweak it. Also, 167W with HB6s will be more than enough for me. I don't see myself vaping any higher than 120W with my TFV8. Hell, my LG HG2s might even be sufficient. Will have to look it up. I also just grabbed myself an authentic Tsunami 24 RDA today along with a Coil Master DIY V3. My shop didn't carry any SS316(L) wire so I'll have to grab that some place else or online. Excited to try it all out together! Although, the Lost Vape Therion DNA167 seems to be pretty much ''Out Of Stock'' everywhere online or they have shitty colors left. I'm looking for an all Black, preferably the Elephant Black, so if any of you guys have a good recommendation of shops where they have it in stock, send it my way :)

Thanks for all the replies and help people! Very much appreciated!

Can't go wrong with the Lost Vape Therion and the great thing is it already comes setup out of the box. Maybe try vapordna.com, they seem to get the new stuff in quick and ship from California. There prices tend to be on the high end though. I do have an eye out for the black framed Therion with the white or grey snakeskin, if I find it for a good price I will let you know AFTER I order mine....lol

Well, from the other forum I use in the UK as well as here, it seems a bit of a lottery unfortunately if it will work well or not.

I have the 'B' revision, and find that SS316L works very well in TC mode. I seem to be in the minority on the other forum though, with many other users, including real TC nuts who have many, many mods find it just doesn't work for them.

I am really unsure as to why this would be. I have no reason to disbelieve those that are saying it just doesn't work for them, as they have no reason to not believe me when mine works well.

I would say to test it out as you already have the mod. If it works well, or well enough for you to enjoy, then that is great! You can then enjoy TC using the mod you already have. If however you are building correctly, and find it doesn't work, it would be a good idea to get another mod that does SS TC well.

Ever since I tried TC on a DNA I was hooked. I haven't tried wattage in almost 2 months now. I have the Smok Alien and haven't touched it since I got the Therion. It's night and day difference.

Thread is a little old, and I am guessing you found the mod already, but just in case VR has a black frame with carbon in stock.
