Mod getting hot while charging

Hi folks,

Been a smoker for 15 years and in order to quit recently got into vaping.

Purchased a wismec predator mod with a couple of lg in2 hg2 batteries.

I popped the batteries into the mod and started charging it through the usb cable (which is connected to an Aukey usb charger).

After about an hour of charging I picked up the unit and noticed that it was hot. Not warm but noticeably hot.

I'm getting conflicting information because the rep where I purchased the unit from stated that the mod will get hot if the batteries are in the mod while it charges. She suggested to get a Nitecore or EFect charger or any other charger to charge the batteries.

However, the manufacturer is stating that the mod should not get hot even if it's charged with the batteries inside.

Sorry I'm a noob to this but I don't think the mod should be getting hot when it's being charged with the batteries inside?

Bad battery or bad mod?

What is the output of the Aukey?

What is the output of the Aukey?

^^^That. Not-so-smart charging circuits do not function properly if underpowered by a low output current power supply. Wismec implies at their site it can use as little as a 500 mA power supply but I wouldn't expect great results doing that. A 2 amp supply is required for their fast charge mode.

As others have stated, get a nitecore (cheaper) or xtar (more expensive with extra features not usually needed). LGHG2 are great batteries though, so even using the usb you should not have any major issues. The external charger has added safety features not present in the USB charger though, plus.. it will allow you to vape on your mod, with spare batteries charging for now down time. As an ex smoker, I am sure you have gotten up for that 3am cigarette.. lol.. I hated when my mod was charging at 3am.

Welcome to the forum and congrats on quitting the stinky sticks. If you need any help getting through rough patches, just give a shout. We've all had them.

I would also discontinue using that charger. It is meant for charging cell phones and ipods. Keep in mind, the batteries in your mod are much stronger. 4 of them could probably jump start your car... (although I wouldn't rush out to test the theory. lol, though I have seen portable packs that can trickle charge a dead battery to get the car started on info-mercials.) In other words, those batteries pack a punch and chargers aren't something you want to mess with. A nitecore charger is only $24.99 in local shops here for a 2 port unit, $34.,99 for 4 ports. Not worth risking a fire for the sake of saving a couple bucks on a charger.

In the greater scheme of gear today this isn't exactly an expensive high end device. It also wouldn't be the first one that had a badly performing internal charge function. If it's performing correctly otherwise you will simply have to abandon charging batteries internally or return it. A properly functioning charge circuit shouldn't be making LiOn batteries warm, let alone hot.

Also, a good charger (I still prefer Xtar :D) if taken care of, is pretty much a very long term investment.

I have a 2 bay that I now only use for travel that I have had for about 4 years and a 4 bay that I have had and use daily for about 3 years.

I don't know why people think Xtar chargers are expensive. Unless they are shooting for the cheapest possible price on a NiteCore at eBay - not recommended for chargers or batteries.

For what you get, I think the Xtars are reasonably priced. Heavy duty construction, battery slides are smooth and they do the job well. Granted that most folks will not need/use the included Automotive DC adapter but it is nice to have and I keep mine in the trunk just in case.

In case of what, I am not sure but I have the damn thing:D

The other thing about Xtar is if you buy them from an Xtar dealer they are backed with a 2 year warranty. Two things:

The 2 year warranty.

A company that backs anything with a 2 year warranty actually expects it to last... at least 2 years.

My first Xtar is over 5 years old (WP2 II) - still works.

LOL...

I just looked up nitecore warranty... it is 12 months on chargers.
Either way, both xtar and nitecore are excellent chargers. Pretty sure they both have polarity checking and will not allow batteries to charge backwards and heat protection.
From what I was looking at on nitecore site, the only things that really can damage them would void the warranty.... like excessive dropping and leaky batteries. Keep em dry, clean, and don't try to recharge old, leaky or vented batteries, and the stupid things will probably out live you. (Like my grandmothers 23 year old vacuum. I got another 8 years out of it after that.. only thing that killed that beast was I had to store it in a basement which was to damp.
