Full disclosure:
Let’s get all the disclosures out of the way. This kit was sent to me directly from Smok specifically for the purposes of this review. This will not in any way, shape, or form cause me to give this kit a favorable review or change my opinion in any way.
Yeah, I know this mod has been out for a while. I also know that everyone owns one. Some people even own multiple Aliens ( @Paratech lol ) in multiple colors. To be honest when Smok first approached me I did ask for the G150 and the Spirals Plus tank. Instead I got an Alien kit and a Spirals Plus tank. Now mind you I’m not complaining, it's all good. In fact I am probably one of the few members on this forum that up until now does not own an Alien. So I guess it is only fitting that if they were not going to send me a G150 that it at least be an Alien. I do have several Smok mods but for no particular reason I just never got around to acquiring an Alien. In a way I am glad I finally do have an Alien because now I have one of the most popular mods ever made to use as a reference point. Being a huge fan of the flask form factor though I still do want a G150. So stay tuned.
First Impression Out Of The Box:
Whoah, this color is just banging. Open the box and it just jumps out at you. Love it. Lookie here, I have a matching Baby Beast to boot. First tier of the box has the beautiful purple mod in it. Pull the ribbon and on the second tier is the tank, coils, glass, spare parts, user manuals, and USB cable.
What's In The Box:
* One SMOK Alien 220W TC Box Mod
* One SMOK TFV8 Baby Beast Tank
* One V8 Baby Q2 Coil Head
* One V8 Baby T8 Coil Head
* USB Charging Cable
* Replacement Parts and Glass
* User Manual
* 2 Vape bands
* Screen protector
This is really a complete kit. All you need are some high quality 18650 batteries to get started. The included screen protector is a really nice touch.
From Top To Bottom:
The Mod
On the top of the mod there are four star screws. On one end of the top of the mod you have the 510 connection. The 510 is stainless steel and the threading itself is very smooth. The pin is gold plated and has a really strong spring to it with a short but firm throw to it. All of my atomizers fire on it and they all sit flush.
One side of the mod has some branding on it that is not subtle but no where near obnoxious either. There is a carbon fiber sticker that has Smok in white lettering as well as Alien 220w TC. The sticker looks to be of high quality and it actually has a little texture to it.
On the narrow side of the mod there is a blank side and on the other side there is a firing bar. Smok is famous for its firing bar and for good reason. It is extremely comfortable and easy to find. My firing bar has no wiggle or rattle to it and it feels very solid. It fires easier when you press the top of the bar but you can get pretty close to the bottom and still fire the mod it just takes more effort.
In my opinion, along with the form factor of the Alien the screen is what really sets it apart and made the Alien as popular as it is today. This screen is just chock full of information. On this screen you will see wattage/temp, mode, preheat, battery meter, volts, ohms, amps, PCB, puffs, and puff duration. Like I said a ton of information. The screen has a nice font with adjustable brightness. Some of the fonts are small but I had no problem reading them in any lighting condition. On both sides of the mod above the screen and the sticker there is some venting.
Located below the screen you have the +/- buttons and the charge/update port. The +/- buttons have a squarish shape to them with little indents. They are clicky and responsive. One little annoying thing is they are both placed on an angle, one higher than the other. The - button is actually mounted higher than the + button. When I first got the mod I found myself constantly hitting the - button instead of the plus because it was higher. I did get over that rather quickly but I had to mention it. The charge/update port is also mounted on an angle as well.
Push in and pull out to open the battery door and push down and in to close it. The battery door seals up nice and tight with no wiggle or looseness. On the back of the door there are button style battery contacts and the battery orientation is clearly marked. There is also some venting present. Inside the battery tubes there is also clear battery orientation markings. All of the batteries I have used fit nice and snug and when I close the door I get no battery rattle.
The Tank
In my opinion the included TFV8 Baby tank is a little underpowered for a mod with the Aliens capabilities. The TFV8 Baby is a tried and true sub ohm tank that deserves every bit of popularity it has attained but paired with the Alien I just would have preferred a bigger tank like the TFV8 or TFV12. It has a nice sized, wide bore, delrin drip tip paired with smok’s famous hinged, locking top fill system. The o'rings that hold the glass in place are nice and beefy and should guard well against any leaks. The chimney section screws directly into the coil head to provide awesome vapor and flavor. The airflow is massive and smooth. This is a direct lung hit tank. No MTL here folks. Even if you cut the airflow down to a sliver you will get a restricted lung hit.
The Baby tank measures up at 22mm by 53mm with a 3ml capacity. The two coils that come with the tank are the .15 ohm coil and the .4 ohm coil. The .15 ohm coil can be vaped up to 70 watts but is best between 45 - 60 watts. The .4 ohm coil can be vaped up to 80 watts but is best between 55 - 65 watts. Really disappointed that the kit did not include an RBA base. In this day and age that should be a given and not a separate purchase. Sorry, but if you are going to make a RBA section it should be included. This goes for all manufacturers and if it is made and not included I will always list it as a con.
The Look, Feel, and General Aesthetics Of The Mod:
What can I say? I love, love, love this color. It is a deep, dark, vivid, royal looking purple. Smok also did a bang up job matching the color of the tank to the mod. As far as the form factor I love it. This is a small, dual battery, mod That is really comfortable. The paint on mine seems to be very well done. I know others have had paint issues and that those issues are well documented but mine seems to be holding up very well. Anyone that follows me here knows that I am usually pretty rough on my mods so take from that what you will. I don’t baby my mods at all, I vape them.
