Vicious Ant Spade

So I pulled the trigger on one of these BAD BOYS... or I hope it is a bad boy lol. Anyways, I have been squonking with a Pulse BF Mod and either the pulse 24 or dead rabbit rda. I have only used pre-built coils, but am now getting into making my own (Not sure what to use with a mech squonk mod though Kanthol, Nichrome, or SS). So I am still learning all that. I have pretty much all the tools to do it including an ohms reader, drill and other small tools. Not sure what gauge wire to order or which type and brand. Should I just order spools of all gauges like 22-32 or so? I don't think wire is too expensive, but I am not sure.

So pretty sure I am ready. I also have been reading and watching videos on ohms law and battery safety etc... because I know it is important when it comes to mechs. Anyone have any experience with the Vicious Ant Spade and or Dead Rabbit/Pulse 24 and what type of coils and wire have worked best? Any advice or opinions is much appreciated. I am going for flavor mostly. Thanks A lot.

Here is my current setup with some pre-build fused claptons and an ijoy 20700. But like I said I want to start building my own coils for best flavor.

Start out with round wire. I prefer Ni80 on my mechs... Ramps up MUCH faster than Kanthal. Stainless steel also works, but since the resistance of SS increases as it heats up, I find a variance in the vape that I do not like. Purchasing 3 spools, one each 26 gauge, 24 gauge, 22 gauge will give you a good feel for things. When you're ready for more, you can either attempt some Clapton wire starting with 26 gauge wrapped with 32 gauge, then fused Clapton's using 2 x 26 gauge wrapped with 32 gauge. As you get more comfortable with Claptoning, go with smaller wires... 2 x 28/36, etc.

Or, a lot of companies are selling decent fused Clapton wires on spools, now.

I honestly do not feel or taste a significant difference between fused Clapton and Alien wires...

For my mechs with trusted 30 amps cells, I typically build something like a 5 wrap, 3 mm ID, 2 x 26/36 ni80 fused Clapton which comes out to around 0.15Ω...

I'm jealous - have almost bought a Spade many, many times :shades:

It is very likely to have a much faster response and much less sag than the Pulse, which does have a lot of issues

I'm a real fan of SS and get all my wire from advancedvapesupply.com - while they are not the cheapest, their wire is clean and as advertised

They also sell a lot of prewraped wire

Thats A LOT of good information man I appreciate all of it. Question for you about the NI 80 though. I have seen alot of people saying Nichrome added a metalic taste to their vape for whatever reason? Have you experienced that? I also heard it was great in mechs because little to no ramp time, but the taste thing kind of made me want to stay away.

I'm one of the people who gets a metallic taste, which is why I like SS better. But Kanthal is worse to me.

I, personally, have noticed no taste difference. Some might say, though, did I do not have the most refined taste buds. That said, I did notice a taste difference when using nickel 200 in temperature control. Of course, taste is all subjective. For the couple of bucks it might cost you to get a spool of nichrome 80 wire, I think it would be worth it to find out for yourself.

Thank you I will def check them out. I actually ordered some prebuilt wire spools of a few different types, I am just worried they wont be as advertised and most likely be a wrapped flat wire or something, but im hoping not so I will definitely check that company out. Thank You.

Ya I will def try it out as it will be best to see for myself like you said. I think I am most interested in trying nichrome an SS. So I guess I can grab a few gauges of wire of each type. What kind of cotton do you guys use?

Again, remembering that I claimed to not have the most sensitive taste buds on the planet...

If you like the organic Japanese cotton pads, this stuff is pretty darn good and very inexpensive.
COTTON LABO Organic Cotton Large Puff, 0.23 Pound https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000TCEXOS/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_W0qWAbMRQ5XFX

If you prefer the loose or stuff... Similar to, say, cotton bacon, just try some organic cotton balls from Walgreens.

If you're real cheap, get some Sally's rayon. $20 will get you a lifetime supply. There is a break-in with Sally's rayon but the stuff lasts so long, that most people find it worth it.

If you're really stuck on the idea of using some "premium" wicking, I recommend Native Wicks.

My new favorite is Cotton Bacon Prime - amazing stuff that lives up to the hype, I was surprised at that

Zero break-in and wicks faster than anything I've ever seen. It also tastes fresh for a longer period of time

I use cotton bacon right now, and sometimes japanese organic cotton. But have heard of some people using organic or egyption that is almost yellow looking. Just seeing what people think lol. Biggest thing will be learning to build coils and what materials to use.

As long as you are being safe, the only way to get there is to experiment and find what is right for you :)

I like the Spade mod, very well built, no complaints from my end other than I had to file down the door panels a bit as the initial fit was really tight. However, I've heard from the shop I purchased mine from that a few people have complained about arcing issues with the button to contact.

I don't know if lower resistance builds makes that more evident, but I don't have, or ever had any arcing issues. (I typically build around .75-.80 ohms, simple kanthal build with 26g)

I've only taken the mod apart once, and that was just to shorten the throw a bit (out of the box the button is pretty stiff)

2 other misc. comments about the Spade:

- I find the bottle removal pin pretty useless since I never remove the bottle without removing the battery. I guess its there for people who might want to change flavors while leaving the battery in place. When my bottle is close to empty, thats when I replace the battery, so for me, the bottle and battery swap is almost always done at the same time.

- For the easiest, no mess refills, when you screw the cap onto the bottle, just cover the top hole on the cap with your finger, then turn the bottle upside down and release, you should hear a small pop of air, no juice should leak out if you limit the refill amount to 95% of the bottle capacity.

Hope that helps a bit, enjoy your new Spade!

BTW, the Spade squonker is now available in Club, Heart and Diamond shapes ;)

Good stuff to know, thank you. I ordered my spade directly from vicious ant which is coming from the Philippines if I am not mistaken. I am definitely really excited to get it and start building. I will only be using in my house ofc as I rarely take my mods outside and when I do I definitely would not take this in my pocket. I appreciate all the information and advice.

That’s all well and good, but does longevity matter if my coils are getting gunked up in a week or two? Gotta change the wick regardless if I am cleaning my coils.

IME - the wick tastes fresher longer, four or five days, not just a day like with CB V2

I also have to rewick weekly, or every 10 days at the longest

Wow...my CB V2 wicks are lasting me at least a week. I don’t use super sweet juices and the flavor is decent for that long at least. Usually I change it out because I’m trying a new coil build lol.

That is what I am trying to say, the CB 2 lasts a long time, but it doesn't taste fresh for as long as the CB Prime

I only rewick and dry burn every 7 - 10 days, regardless if I'm using CB V2 or the new Prime
