It was 90 yesterday, not 77. ;) And Dale, Rich is right, the garden is just starting to produce. There are quite a few ripe tomatoes out there now, the cantaloupes are about as big as a softball (PLEASE God let them get ripe! It's our only fruit!), I'm in the middle of doing the sauerkraut now, and there are some nice fat butternut squashes out there I need to can up for winter. The summer squash is getting away from me. I should have been canning that the last couple of weeks, but with everything else going on, I just haven't had the time. Eh, even if it's "old," the chickens like it, so it won't be wasted.

The weeds won the battle this year, however, and it's kinda hard to find anything out there. I know where to look, because I know where I planted stuff, but I bet Rich doesn't even remember we have melons. ;) I did lose my beans. I mean, I know where they should be, but the tangle of bindweed and amaranth all over them is impenetrable. Cucumbers are the same. I've only found a few, and I KNOW there have to be dozens and dozens in there. I'll find them when they turn into yellow schoolbuses.... argh.
Sounds like a real mess, Lannie......:deadhorse:

And it was 91 today, Dale, but still didn't feel like it. Cricket popped just after noon, so now we have two baby heifers to contend with and we have to start milking again as of tomorrow morning. (Lannie milks, but I need to be there on shit duty and for other support)
G'Evening my Old Phart Friends, hows everyone doing tonight?
How the hell are ya, Jimi? Nice to see ya around here again.

Lannie you should grow your cucumbers on a fence, sure you have a spare piece somewhere and a few posts to wire it too, it will help keep them up out of the worst of the weeds maybe. They do well that way too and easier on us old pharts to pick.:D

Because she is already in bed, I will answer this. I put up posts with several wires running end-to-end. Problem was the cukes grew at ground level and were covered by the bind weed before we could lift the cuke vines to the first wire. The bind weed wound around the cuke vines so tightly that we couldn't separate them without risking ripping the cuke vines.

I know just what a pain those are, even if you pull them they still come back

Seems to me like I am ripping them out constantly. I can fill several wheelbarrows with these damn weeds and walk back around that area the next day and it looks as if I never pulled a one of those G#@ Da%$ Rotten Mot&%r Fu$#%&g Sons-a-B$#%&es......

Yeah that's the way it goes here too, I haven't found anything organic that will stop them either. Every year we get more and more

Ditto.
Have you guys always have problems with that shit, or just recent years?
I never even saw that shit back in Orygun. Here, it was present when we first moved here, but didn't seem to be the prime nuisance (it was the purslane back then). It seems to me that the more I cultivated the ground, the thicker and quicker it grew and rapidly took over as the primary nasty weed. Now it does grow in areas that I have never plowed up (e.g., the pix I posted a couple weeks back with it growing up the fence in the dog yard), but it seems to grow quicker in softer tilled soil.

The purslane goes good in salads and is good for you, we fight it every year too so I eat it to get some revenge.

Many years ago, some forum friends of Lannie's were trying ever so hard to grow purslane (as you say, it is a healthy veggie) and they just couldn't get it to grow (they were somewhere back east). I scratched my head because I couldn't get it to go away. Things like this obviously depend on the type and quality of your soil.

I can't get it to go away either, it's like a low growing jungle, so i must have pretty good soil then

Well, it has been a bunch of years since I planted anything in Illinois (I live there in 1968 for a few months, then 1972 for about 10 months) and, as I recall, the soil was soft, almost black, and very moist. Just about anything will grow there. Around the Urbano-Champaign area, corn seems to grow with no effort by the farmer.
Hard to figure, i thought we had a pretty regular group:(
Maybe they dropped out because there was no Jimi to talk to and Dale and I were just too boring to keep them interested?

Yeah everything seems to grow well here especially the weeds:giggle: it's a full time job just trying to keep up with the garden.

I seriously doubt that.

Nah - been very, very busy with all manner of real life problems and projects - no time to relax and socialize - miss it and can't wait to get past all this crap!

Hi Jimi
Hi Old Pharts!

I have been super busy with my job. I expect my hours to lessen since they hired more nurses. It's okay. I'm planning on a second job just in case this job fizzles out. (Lack of hours) I still need to get my transmission rebuilt. It's a shame since the car had less than 70,000 on it when I first figured out the problem. Right now, I'm able to drive it as long as I'm gentle with the overdrive (auto). I had the A solenoids replaced back in July. I wish I could find someone who could figure it out but all the locals want to do is rebuild or replace.

Automatic transmissions are about the only thing on a vehicle that I will only do simple stuff with.
Filter fluid replace, input/output seals replaced, etc.

I have friends who do the internal work on them.
