Just popped in to see what was happening here tonight. It is great to see such activity once again.
I can't stay long because today was very long, tiring, hard, stressful, frustrating... Lannie came in from the barn this morning and told me Cricket was sick (the cow who gave birth yesterday). Looked like Ketosis, but she was wobbly (like she was about to fall down) and one of Lannie's cow friends told her that was Milk Fever. I drove over to a neighboring rancher's place and borrowed some medicine (liquid minerals) and Lannie and I tried to do an IV (sub-cutaneous, not in the vein), which didn't go too well. I drove to Faith Vet to get more medicine and came back to assist Lannie. The neighbor showed up with some hay for us, so while he helped Lannie with Cricket, I cleaned up the hay room and laid down some new pallets, then we moved several tons of small bale hay in there (his kids are still hay monkeys and stacked it right up to the rafters). We had a short rest, then Lannie milked Cricket as best as she could given that she was in no mood to stand still after being punctured with needles a few dozen times. We never even managed to get any breakfast all day, but finally came to the conclusion we had done all we were capable of and will see how it worked out in the morning. Phew...
