Alright look I understand this is a global site. And really this is a phrase that isnt used by the world but it's been used by my family, and will continue to be used, 'Merry Christmas'. Infact I remember saying, and may go to, 'have a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.' Honestly we have become to soft as a to make everyone happy there are people who are gonna be pissed. And this is one that is pissin me off. Its not Happy Holidays. Its Merry Christmas, and if it offends you, too bad. I work with many people who are Jewish, Muslim, And Hindu and they ALL say MERRY CHRISTMAS. That being said, I will then return them with the same, and add Happy Hanukah, Kwanzaa or Merry Christmas even if they don’t celebrate. This is Christmas, what will happen if we have to start observing other holidays?? Would it make sense for America to celebrate the Canadians Boxing Day? NO. Most Americans don’t even know what it is. What ever happened to if you don’t like it, don’t do it? Oh they took over and now we the masses have to bow down to the WEAK. F that!
End rant.
Merry Christmas Y’all!!
Ps feel free to blast me, I’m good with it. I have a thick skin. Plus, I’m not afraid of a keyboard tough guy/girl………..

Christ was born....we have proof of this, so Christmas, merry or otherwise is an occasion of fact. In my opinion, those who are affected by any particular holiday greeting are just looking for a reason to protest...and those reasons are found in some tragic sense of fear or guilt. I wish people Merry Christmas because that is what it is to me. I don't run around asking people their religion, so I cannae really know. Most Jews will return the sentiment regardless. As a Franciscan street evangelist, I am perpetually full of cheer and will gladly acknowledge a person's holiday traditions...provided they inform me exactly what they are lol !

Oh, the ones that dont will tell....but they say, Merry Christmas anyway. Infact a dear friend of mine at work is Hindu she is a manager. She was told, 'you cant say Merry Christmas it might offend someone'. She told me when she left the managers meeting, she said to make a point, "Merry Christma'. BUAHAHAHAHA. gotta love it.

Let me be devil's advocate here. People say im good at that.
what did the native americans celebrate? Happy winter solstice? happy good luck keeping warm?
I do understand were your coming from, and I do think its ridiculous we have to pu$$y-foot around the subject, but xmas isn't American.
I am an American,( 5th gen Norway/ and some pole) so don't think that I am on a high horse using indigenous people for examples.
Does anyone know if natives had a dance or pow-wow, or time for get togethers this time of year?
Merry xmas seems to mean almost nothing, similar to " How are you doing to day?" We almost always say "good" because nobody really cares what kind of day, month, year, life, we are really having.
I applaud you for starting a thread that can get very....opinionated.
May I say, A very big, MERRY CHRISTMAS TO YOU AND YOURS!!

Globally....celebrations were held to mark the four agricultural seasons of the LUNAR year.....even my Church (Roman Catholic) acknowledges that Christ was most likely born in the early summer of the Gregorian Calender...which of course did not exist in the mid first century CE. Subsequently, this unifies the worlds celebration of the time when "The earth sleeps"....this being said...regardless of what we say, believe, or exercise...we are all saying the same thing...in gloriously different ways.

"the earth sleeps"....sounds pagan. your rebuttle, fran?
The more I learn about just how small our marble in space is, the more I realize that Christianity is a conglomarite of all religions.
We have a xmas tree in our lunch room at work, and we just went thru harassment training.
A guy said, jokingly," Im offended by that tree". I said, What? you don't bring a tree to your home to invite the spirits of the forest to give your home new fresh life? All sarcastic.
Then a guy that no one talks to because he wants to "save" everybody gave me a thumbs up, without a word. Ive got my eye on you, fran!! lol

We simply spend WAY too much time in VU. One could probably could cut the silence between us with a knife if we somehow ended up sitting at the same table in a cafe.

It doesn't bother me either way, really.

For me, typing out "Xmas" is just easier, it's not a political or religious statement. I think people know what it is meant to confer.

I also don't walk around saying "Merry Xmas", because that would be absurd. ;-)

I am a Pagan. If people say merry Christmas to me I politely say you too. This is because I want them to enjoy the holiday season with their loved ones. I say happy holidays because in a country that is and was made from a melting pot, there are many who do not celebrate the holiday. I take no offence to marry Christmas.

That being said December 25 was said to be Mythrs day of birth. The Romans adopted this as Christmas to please the pagan people when the conversion to Christianity came about. We celebrate Yule. It is the winter solstice. It was being celebrated before Christ's birth. The tree, Santa, stocking's, and the north star all come from pagan traditions throughout the world. The Christians came and addaptex things. Concurring countries in the name of Christ had nothing to do with religion, it was politics. Norway was sold out by their king and the Norwegian people were forced to convert. Tonight Santa will leave gifts and my kids will wake up with smiles that is the most important part for me.

On that note. HAPPY YULE, MERRY CHRISTMAS, HAPPY HANUKKAH, HAPPY QUANZA, HAPPY WHAT EVER THE HELL YOU DO. HECK HAPPY INTERWEBS DIRTY BARNYARD FECAL FAPPING DAY.

My point is everyone please enjoy what ever it is you do this time of year. Be safe, hug a loved one and hell hug a stranger, but be careful that could get weird. I hope you all have bright blessing and enjoy your selves.

There is a sanskrit saying "namaste" that means "the divine in me recognizes the divine in you" or "my soul recognizes yours"

To me happy holidays is like saying "my culture recognizes/respects your culture"

If you're a christain and a Muslim walks up to you and says "happy Ramadan" or a Jewish person says "happy Hanukkah" how would you respond? Some might say enjoy your holiday but you know damn well plenty would look at them confused and respond with something like "I don't celebrate xyz holiday" and walk off.

Some people in the United States actually think this is a "Christian country". It isn't. It's a country that has "freedom of religion". No where in the Constitution is there an established federal religion.

I've even heard some people say "I'll say merry Christmas if you don't like" our customs" you can leave" which is a mind boggling statement to me. It's like saying convert, deal with it or leave. I'm not sure what they mean by "our" either. Our who? Americans? Americans are a mix of religions and customs.

There was a headline in our state that read "school strips all holidays from school calender because Muslims are offended" instead they just call it winter break. But when you read the actual story Muslims were not offended, they simply wanted thier holiday recognized on the calender as well.

Sometimes when I speak to the majority of people in the United States the concept of our country feels fake to me.

One of the most beautiful components of my religious training is that of comparative religions. It serves to deepen my love and understanding of my brothers and sisters globally. It also enables me to join them in their spiritual joy...even if it differs from my own.

TBH I am not a Christmas person however I take it on the chin - half heartedly join in for the sake of the culture that I live in..and grit my teeth until its all over ( with a smile on my face). I respect the cultural importance of this tradition as I respect all (most) cultural traditions Ho! Ho! Ho!
