Kayfun to airy?!?!?

SSSSoooo ...
I picked up a Kayfun light clone. I went from cigalikes and clearomizers to sub-ohm tanks and RBA's and then on to RTA's and RDA's. I never got to experience the hyped Kayfun MTL. All in all it's a really decent authentic pull. But only decent. I was expecting to have to PULL on the SOB. I find it to be still pretty airy for my tastes. Anyone who ever smoked Parliaments will know the draw I'm looking for. If I take the Kayfun and stuff cotton into the air hole it is perfect lmao!

Anyone know of any SSSSUUUUPPPPEEERRR tight draw MTL atties out there? Preferably rebuildable. I've got a couple of pod systems that I like the draw on ... but Non of them seem to satisfy me. I need to be able to tweak the build and power level.

EDIT: The Kayfun airflow has been discussed and fixed. But I'm still always open to suggestions and discussions on the MTL vape experience. I haven't vaped this way in a looong time so I'm totally out of the loop here.

@Huckleberried woild be a good person to get advice from on that.

Personally, I find the Kayfun lite to be perfect. It could be you ended up with a drilled out clone though.

Nah ... I checked the diameter and it's right on. This was actually one of the things that made it hard for me to make the full switch for so many years. There are very few atties on the market that have the draw I'm looking for in a MTL setting.

Well... I don't know how much help I'll be, I like a bit of an airy MTL, like the Geekvape Ammit (the first one). I'm surprised the Kayfun was too airy for you. I don't know if this will help, or not.

I see a lot of MTLers talking about the Berserker, but this guy is really informative, IMO.

There are a lot of Kayfuns.... if you got the kayfun 4, it's got TWO external airholes, which I would hate. But, the "Kayfun Lite Plus" was always great, to me, and I like airflow that most around here call "gnat's ass tight" -- it's got the hex-key adjuster thingie on the bottom, and I always kept it closed almost all the way... and it was GREAT!

I don't know the "kayfun lite", but maybe without the "plus", there's no way to adjust it? All my KFL+'s had the hex-key adjuster on the bottom.

Yah that's why it's so hard for me to find an agreeable MTL experience. I'm am 1 in a million in my draw preference. So, up until inserts started showing up, no1 makes atties that are for such a small percentage of people.

I see a lot of MTLers talking about the Berserker
I actually have a Berserker mini on the way. I'm hoping it does the trick.

Great video ... thanks for the link!

Lite was the same as the plus just with non adjustable airflow.
It was a hair less expensive at the time.

@WPMac can you post a picture of the Kayfun you’re referring to?

With so many variations it’s easy to consider that we are thinking different versions

Well hello there Mr. Airflow pin!! I knew it was there, from my previous research on it ... and completely forgot about it. That's perfect!! Thank you :D

Now ... if only it wasn't 3 miles tall and gold  That's ok ... If the Beserker is a good draw the kayfun can be my around the house MTL :)

They make “nano” kits for those that drop the height in half...
or you can get a bell cap.

Loads of custom options of Kayfun!

Just do a search on fasttexh for it...
they may still have the tip fill caps for it also.

I got it in a trade with no box or anything. Just was told it was a Kayfun Lite Clone
Here's a pic for reference ... though the problem has been resolved :D And I didn't like the way the drip tip felt. So I put my 2 chamber smok 510 on it. The inner tube is a little bigger than the kayfun ... but I honestly don't notice a difference in vape quality.

I can say the Savour MTL is a good tank, only 2ml though. It comes with 2 airflows/posts. One for restricted lung (installed) and a MTL, the restricted lung post is too loose IMO, and the mtl is too tight for me, tighter than a KFL. I drilled mine out with a 1.5mm bit and it’s good for me.

The EHPRO True mtl tank is a great tank and is true mtl, run mine on the largest hole and it’s still tight, also is fairly low profile and comes with a bubble glass (3 mill?)

Well then that's the exact problem -- anyone wanting very tight draw HAS TO be able to adjust the airflow.

The Berserker does have a setting for VERY tight draw. I really liked that aspect of it. Unfortunately, mine leaked like a sieve. I have the original, not the mini or the v2, so I dunno if they fixed the leak problem.

If only the Achilles was still made/sold, I'd HIGHLY recommend it... it's super-tight, and has SUPER saturated flavor and great TH too. But dammit all to hell and back, nobody makes/sells it any longer. If they did, I'd buy about 10 of 'em!

And no I don't mean that abortion sold on some discount site, the real Achilles (and clones, which is what I have) looks like this:

Those Kayfun nanos truly suck; no flavor at all, and I felt that way back when I used Kayfuns exclusively -- just no flavor, and it's also real damn easy to get a dry hit, a burnt wick.

The nano cap?
It shortens the chimney, I’ve never had it do anything other than make the flavor better. Same base so airflow and build are the same.

Ummm if the draw is set tight, there’s no reason to adjust.

You can only make holes so small.

Rose 3 by Eden Mods is an excellent MTL atty - a little tricky to put together, but smooth (and tight) sailing after you put it together the first time

Wow. Two completely ridiculous statements.
Yeah because a hole can get infinitely smaller and no one has ever used a Kayfun lite and thought it was perfect.

I think what she was trying to say is - Super Duper tight draws are not the norm. So, companies aren't going to make the standard airflow that way. Those of us who want it "cheek sucking" need an adjustable airflow because, more than likely, wide open on anything isn't going to work for us.

They won’t anymore, no.

But with a lot of the older stuff it was commonplace. The giant airflow tanks and what not are relatively new.
There was a tome when 20w was a groundbreaking amount of power. If you built to 0.9 ohms on a mech, you were considered a cloud chaser and treading on unsafe ground.

My first rda had a 1mm airhole, until I drilled it out to 2mm to get what was massive airflow at the time.

Adjustable airflow wasn’t always standard either. That Kayfun lite has fixed airflow. By most accounts of the users at the time, it was fixed at a point that more closely related to a cigarette draw. I won’t go as far as to say that is the case, but it is what i reach for if and when that craving hits. The stock driptip on that tank also
Helped to closely relate to that experience ... at least for me.
Long and slender with a tiny hole.
(Stop laughing, it did help me quit)

I never did like the kayfun driptips, even with my need for a super-tight draw. My favorite driptips are the acrylic Mings -- like these:

setups2.jpg

setups3.jpg

The aperture is about 4mm-5mm, quite narrow by modern standards. Another great thing about acrylic is that it's never too hot or too cold -- the way that ALL metal tips are. I disliked the kayfun tips, and also the "genii bottle" tips, because the aperture is SOOOO narrow, the vapor is too hot, and I've always hated the metal tips for being too cold, and then getting too hot when you take a hit.

And hey, @WPMac -- I really, REALLY appreciate you being around. They all treat me like I'm some kind of freak, wanting a super-tight draw at very low wattage. You are a breath of fresh air, of the way that vaping USED TO BE!!! And still is, for me! None of that huffing shit!!!

I started vaping in 2012. So, while I haven't been "in the know" for maybe as long as others ... But, I have watched, and been a part of, the majority of the progression of the vape industry.

And that is my whole point. 1mm is way to airy for me as an MTL. I need at least 1/2 that, if not smaller (I have the Kayfun closed all the way tight then turned back like 1/4-1/2 turn on the screw). And very few people, even back then, wanted a draw that tight. If they did they went with cigalikes or the few choices in pod systems.

lol ... well I live in both worlds. Or at least getting back into both. My first vape was a clearomizer on a cheap no-name ego batt. My second was a Vapers Corner VCT Tank system (Just a pen/pod system). I LOVED that thing. Vaped on it for like a year. Now that the airflow is fixed this Kayfun vape reminds me a lot of that. It's a totally different vape that I thoroughly enjoy and missed. It's probably been 3 or more years since I've had a good MTL experience.

Now having said that I also love my 45 watts, and my 75 watts and my 100+ watts, and the occasional 200 watt series blow your face off. You see, I fell into the "new and improved" trap and slowly worked my way up the wattage pole over the years. I've been on a 75-100w cloud bender for about a year and a half. But when it comes down to it, if someone held a gun to my head and said I could only pick 1 for the rest of my life it would be a low watt "gnats ass" MTL vape with 12-18mg nic and a buttery type flavor (Vanilla Caramels are my fav for low wattage). Luckily that hasn't happened yet. So I'll sit around with my 10+ atties, all with different builds for different vapes, and vape ranging from 12 to 100 watts with a smile on my face for all of them :D

1mm is about right for me, even 1.2mm, I can deal with. I recently got a Caiman v4 RDA, which has interchangeable internal-airflow "nozzles", but the smallest it provides is 1.7mm -- much too damn big. I cut a blunt 16ga needle off and inserted it into that 1.7mm, and it helps somewhat, but it's still a bit too airy; might try inserting an 18ga needle into the 16ga to see if that helps. However, unlike every tank I've tried since getting used to the Achilles, it actually does provide some flavor -- it's an RDA! So if I can get the draw somewhat tighter, it would be some alternative to my Achilles.

I can't even imagine using nicotine that high; I could use only 6mg when I first started (Feb 2014), transitioning off the smokes over about 3 wks' time (using my old eRoll), and then when the smokes were finally gone, 10mg was my absolute limit. Anything higher, nausea for HOURS. I got down to 3mg about 2 yrs ago, but recently went back up to 4.5mg, due to mental "fuzziness", having that problem with words "on the tip of my tongue", and it does seem to have helped a lot.

Never ever used a "huffing" type vape, never saw any damn point in it, I sure didn't smoke that way. I smoked VA Slims, in one strength or another, for more than 30 yrs, and that probably explains a lot about why I require such a tight draw -- those cigarettes are very slim, but they're packed TIGHT, to get the same amount of "tobacco" into them.

I've also never seen any damn point in fogging up the whole house; if I vaped that way, my husband would probably exile me back to the porch, where I used to smoke -- and i started vaping JUST so I didn't have to keep running out there, freezing my ass off! My exhaled vapor is roughly the same quantity and thickness as the smoke I exhaled when I smoked, and that is all that's required. I used Flash for quite a while, but over the last 6-9 months, I've finally weaned off it; it got so that along with the TH it provided, it made me constantly feel like I had a sneeze coming on. Couldn't handle that, so that's another reason why I slightly increased my nicotine, to get a bit more REAL throat hit with my 10w. :)

The point for a lot of people is the flavor. The flavor changes with your power level. Most people will say the flavor is better. But I don't buy into that. It is DIFFERENT ... but not better. You get different notes. For instance ... i CAN'T STAND fruits at low wattages. But they are good once I get up past 65 (depending on the build). And Caramel Vanilla is my fav low wat vape ... but it starts to get weird at higher wattages.

I Smoked Parliaments for a number of years. They had a super tightly packed filter.

What is Flash?!? And, if you are one of those people who care about their nicotine intake, you could always increase the PG for throat hit instead of the nicotine.

What is Flash?!? And, if you are one of those people who care about their nicotine intake, you could always increase the PG for throat hit instead of the nicotine.

Heh. I already use 86%-87% PG, and have done since about 6 months after I started vaping. Can't really go much higher, or it starts to burn my throat and nasal mucosa. Tried 90% for about a week, and got a cherry-red throat; both throat and sinuses felt burnt, very painful.

Flash is an additive by FlavourArt, it accentuates TH; it won't provide it if there is no nicotine, but it can take the TH from low nicotine and high PG and enhance it. I always needed it, since I couldn't use much nicotine. I smoked anywhere from 1 to 3.5 pks a day, at different times, in the 39 yrs I smoked, probably averaging to about 2 pks a day, but the last few yrs before quitting, I was smoking a pk or less per day of ultra-lights -- so I couldn't handle much nicotine, but still needed WTA to make the cravings leave me alone. Took about 15 months to wean off it.

For me, the point is *perhaps* not dying of either lung cancer (my father did, it was horrible) or COPD (I already have asthma, so being unable to breathe is something I already know very well, and fear terribly). My asthma forbids inhaling much heat or much vapor; I'm just grateful as all hell that I was able to find a way to vape that's actually *possible* for me, with my asthma -- low wattage, low heat, high PG, and I really haven't needed much nicotine thx to 20+ yrs of ultra-lights -- but the WTA was absolutely essential, because if I couldn't have gotten rid of the cravings, I could never have gotten rid of the cigarettes.

The Achilles is how I get flavor, oh, and also, using a good bit of flavoring in my strawberry & cream -- started out at 31% flavoring, but have gradually reduced it in the 4 yrs I've been making and vaping it, so now it's about 23%, pretty normal amount at this point -- but the Achilles' flavor is SUPER saturated, which is why I can no longer use any kind of tank -- they just don't have any flavor, to me.

Well got the Berserker Mini today. It has a wonderful draw. It's lacking in flavor but I'm not a huge fan of the coil currently in it. Will replace it and check back in with my thoughts on it.

Haven’t tried the mini, may receive on for Christmas tho. Mostly use round wire anymore due to laziness, but recently built a 1 ohm dual 30g kanthal /38g wrap 2.5 mm fused clapton for the True tank and it did seem to boost the flavor a bit.

I just started vaping in April and quit smoking in June, so I have recently tried out a lot of hardware looking for a smoking equivalent experience. I smoked Pall Mall lights at the time I quit. I never smoked a Parliament, but maybe you are familiar with a Pall Mall. I am one of those people who are looking for a super tight draw. I tried the Kayfun Prime. It's smallest air hole is 1mm, and that was far to airy for me. After that, I didn't try anything that I couldn't get the airflow down to less than 1mm. Here are my thoughts about the stuff I tried. I will skip over all of the non-rebuildable stuff ;)

Skyline RTA

I was pretty excited about the whole airdisk thing, so I ordered the Skyline and the extra airdisks. I discovered that even using the smallest airdisk the airflow is too airy. The Skyline also has a separate airflow control, and it is possible to get that closed enough to get a satisfying draw. But it is one giant hole and the adjustment is infinitely variable, so whenever the airflow adjustment got (frequently) moved off its setting, I had to spend forever finding just the right spot again. The Skyline has acceptable flavor and is not difficult to coil or wick. The only other thing that annoyed me was the liquid flow control. I had to twist it a lot to make even small changes in the size of the opening. Fine control is great, but that was a little ridiculous.

Dvarw

After reading so many threads and reviews waxing poetic about the Dvarw, I was really excited to give it try. It also has an air insert system, and it offers an insert that is .8mm. But I was so disappointed when the Dvarw arrived. I put in the .8mm insert and it was still a whole lot airier than the Kayfun Prime on the 1mm setting. Its a breeze to coil and wick, but I found it to be too loose to be vapable.

Spica Pro

This one also has air inserts; they call them air pins. It comes with three sizes, and, frankly, none of them got the airflow tight enough. But it also has a separate airflow control and the smallest hole on it is .8mm. The first time I tried it, I was ready to start singing hosannas. The draw is absolutely perfect and satisfying for me. I tried the draw back and forth comparing it to a cigarette, and the Spica is just a tad tighter.

Once I got the wicking right, the flavor is a little overwhelming. I mix my own liquid and each time I mix, I am cutting back the flavor more and more. Last time I cut it back 20%, next time I will cut it back 30%.

It has a chimney height adjustment that is supposed to control throat hit. It seemed pretty gimicky to me when I read about, but it actually makes a difference, especially in the 5-6mg of nicotine range. At that level, I can take the throat hit from chokingly harsh to almost nonexistent. I am down to 1.5mg now, and the chimney height adjustment does nothing.

There are some things I don't love about it. The tank is small, so I have to refill often. I ordered the ultem tank and that got me an extra 1ml volume, so that is better. The top cap has some wickedly sharp knurling and it is still really hard to grab. I use a paper towel and that makes it a lot better.

The drip tip is also the liquid flow control. Is has two little spikes on the bottom that lock in place. It works really well, and I love the action and feel of the liquid flow, but if you want to use a different drip tip, you will still have to put the factory drip tip in every time you want to fill or adjust the liquid control. The factory drip tip is narrow. More narrow than a cigarette. When I first tried it, it was really weird and I thought I may not be able to deal with it. But after an hour or so I got to really like it. Now if I try anything else, even an 8mm (standard cigarette size), it feels really big.

CoilART Salt

I haven't actually tried this one, but the smallest airflow hole is .6mm and I am really curious about it.

Unfortunately, mine leaked like a sieve. I have the original, not the mini or the v2, so I dunno if they fixed the leak problem.
Well, it leacked bad for a bit ... but I figured out the problem. The zerker and the mini have almost identical decks. If your cotton is touching ANYTHING other than the coil or the juice holes then the juice runs along whatever it's touching down into the airflow hole. I just went in with some tweezers and pushed the cotton around till it wasn't touching anything and no more leaking :D

A heads up about the Salt, will be a bummer for you, the airflow adjustment ring leaks air so even if you set it to .8 it will seem looser. It’s not that big a deal for someone like me who likes a looser mtl, but would probably be a disappointment for someone like yourself.

You can definitely tell a difference adjusting from one air hole to another, but the machining just isn’t good enough to be adjustable AND give a tight draw. I can close it completely off and still take a puff.

Thanks so much for the info. I would have hated to spend the money on it just to be disappointed again.

For squonk RDAs, Etna by Digiflavor has 3 air options and the smaller 2 are both quite tight

The Speed Revolution also has one tiny air hole, but also a tiny deck not suitable for coils over 2mm diameter with high gaugre wire - 1.5mm if you want claptons, it is so tiny that regular 510 drip tips are so long they will touch the posts, and your coil x( But it's great tight MTL if you dont mind tiny coils and tiny driptip

Hastur MTL tank has super tight air option, but it was also super hard for me to get the top cap back on after filling

I don't mind tiny coils. I may be an artistic builder, but when it comes to my vape I prefer function over fashion. BOth the Kayfun and the Zerker currently have 2mm wraps in them. I'm thinking I'm going to go with 1.5 on the zerker next time. The cotton situation makes the 2mm almost seem to big.

And I've had the same experience so far with the Zerker. The o-rings so tight its damn near impossible to move both the AFC and the fill cap. When I replace the coil I'll probably replace the o-rings and see if that helps.

I have an Etna and Hastur mini inbound. Looks like to me that MTL has split into two camps. I may be Captain Obvious here:

"True" tight air, 1 plus ohm, round wire, low watts.

"Modern" more airy even to restricted DL, .6 to .7 claptons, higher watts.

Don't think any rba can be both, seems like there alot of claims by manufacturer that some are.
After 1 so so purchase and 1 very bad, if I see any reviewer open it up and DL, I move on, not for me.

Well the newer ones coming out with the airflow inserts can have a huge range of draw options. Having not owned one myself I can only speculate. But My assumption would be that they would be a "jack of all trades master of non" type vape.

That's very true -- that Caiman v4 I just bought, the smallest "nozzle" is 1.7mm, and they claim THAT is tight -- IT'S NOT!!! It's much too airy for me, and even after inserting a blunt 16ga needle down that 1.7mm, it's STILL too airy. If an 18ga needle won't fit down that, then I plan to get some 20ga needles and try that.

People constantly have told me, this or that or the other thing is REALLY TIGHT -- but those people are vape-huffers, they don't really know what "super tight airflow" really means.

I found this to be almost always the case as well. It's why I have such a hard time actually purchasing MTL atomizers. Any and all reviews on "tight" ariflow MTL attys are based on the users experience. And unless I know that user is looking for an authentic cigarette draw then I have no idea what their version of "tight" is. I want to be able to draw, not inhale, as hard I can for at least 3 seconds straight before I run out of room in my mouth. I want my cheeks to suck in while I hit it for that 3 seconds. That's my baseline for a tight draw. Then I can adjust myself a bit depending on the coil/juice/power.

Heh, I routinely take 6-7 second hits on my Achilles, and yes, it's VERY much like drawing on a cigarette, from which I also took very long hits. My son, Mr Know Everything, says that cigarettes aren't that tight... but he smoked Camel Wides, so no, I guess THOSE cigarettes aren't that tight! But VA Slims? Gnat's Ass. :D

I liked your expression, "cheek sucking".... it's like consuming a Frosty... with a straw. :D And people who huff their vapes have NO frame of reference for what constitutes a tight draw -- Mr Know Everything says that Kayfun 4's, wide open, are "tight as hell". Right.

That kind of suction is what I missed absolutely the most, in my prior attempts at quitting smoking -- I even went so far as to tape a VA Slims filter to a cut-down straw... but there's still no resistance, since you're just sucking wide-open air. I craved that tight-suction feeling -- now I'm perfectly happy, even when I was vaping at 3mg (after the WTA was done with), since the Achilles is so very tight, and delivers such excellent flavor.

Andria

ETA: I should add -- those who are young enough and haven't smoked long enough to have developed the vertical wrinkles in their lips, by all means, huff away, and you probably won't develop them -- but for those of us old farts who already have those wrinkles... what fucking difference does it make? That kind of tight suction WILL cause those wrinkles, but if you've already got 'em... No biggie!!!
