Anyone else see this news story about the guy in Fort Worth who was killed by his ecig?

https://www.star-telegram.com/news/local/community/fort-worth/article225511100.html

Obviously a tragedy, and very sad for his family.

I have a "friend" who had a couple batteries in his pocket last week, loose, and they caught his pants on fire and burned his leg and he is thinking about suing, which really pisses me off. He was not practicing proper battery safety and paid the consequence and now he wants someone else to pay.

My post is really more about what impact you think incidents like this will have on the industry. This case in Fort Worth is gaining national attention and putting an industry already under attack in the national spotlight. Should these companies be held liable for people not practicing proper safety?

Of course not, but is it possible they will in this litigious society we live in

Combine that with shoddy advice (or lack of) given in vape shops, etc and the FDA's mandate vape shop employees not help their patrons learn how to vape, it's a total nightmare

Drives me nuts, how we hold companies responsible for inept consumers. I haven't even really looking into this story and further than what I was seeing on that day, but example 2.

This kid I know, who is an "avid" vaper, decides to put two 18650's in his pocket, no battery case. They spark, burn a hole in his pants and burn his leg, a very minor injury. A couple weeks later he ends up at my house for a superbowl party, we have some mutual friends, walks in the door and starts telling us how he met with a lawyer to see about suing. I couldn't wait for him to get out of my house as I didn't want him to get a boo boo and try to sue me. It's pretty crazy and sad. Vaping isn't only good for people's health, it is good for the economy. I am way more into vaping than I ever was smoking, DIY'ing juice, buying vapes, wire, etc., but because it isn't good for the "RIGHT" people in the economy then it is given an unfair shake. Pretty sad.

Yeah, someone needs to sue the FDA for putting a gag order on vape shops, that way if they don't disclose battery safety, maybe they do deserve to be shut down

I'm curious as to how many of these events are the result of improper or lack of instruction by the vape shop. I'd also be interested to know more details beyond what the article says.

I'm sure that has something to do with it, but as Lucy said, the FDA has that mandate to vape shops employees. I know at my vape shop there is one guy in there, the only person I'll buy stuff from, who knows what he's talking about, is great and has advised me on multiple occasions not to buy something I'm looking at because it isn't a good product, will give me whatever information I ask about if he knows, but really I've only ever frequented 2 b&m and I have to assume that they aren't all like that.

I mostly stay away from b&m shops because most of the kids look at this old man like an idiot because I have no interest in spending $200 of the latest Smok mod of the minute and they have no clue about mechs or battery safety.

Yah, I have found in most instances that employees of stores, whether it is home depot, a vape shop, whatever do not know all that much about the products they sell. When it comes to things that require a measure of safety to operate, I have always been of the mind that I should either learn through practical experience and the gathering of information, whether that is from a first hand user of the product or reading or whatever. Everything I know about vaping safety I've cultivated through this site, practical experience, and a little bit of common sense (like not leaving two high powered cells in your pocket without some type of protection).

Of course, as most of us know, when you buy batteries from good sources they usually include a .30 cent battery case for this very reason.
