I am new to the forum and just exploring around and saw this section.

Back in late January 2014 I decided I needed to get healthy and loose some weight. Primarily I just wanted to be in shape and look better. In mid February 2014 I started a diet and started working out.

Last week I passed the 100lbs lost mark.

I am now focusing on continuing to burn fat while building muscle. I really dont want to loose much more weight, but my body fat % is higher than I'd like.

Down 90 here, still need more to go but not overly worried about body fat.
Mom is 130lbs lost within 15 of her goal.
Take your weight multiply it by 12 and that is your target intake of the day.
Lean protiens, veg heavy and mono sat. oils are your friends.

Very nice Work!

That is very close to what I am doing now, as far as intake.

I am shooting for 1.2 grams of protein per lb of body weight, 1.0 grams of carbs per lb of body weight, and 0.5 grams of fat per lb of body weight in my current plan.

Mono oils like olive, none of that light horse shit I am talking the green first cold pressed stuff..
medium chain triglyceride coconut oils are amazing.
Omega 3 and 6 from fish and eggs.
Fresh ground flax and whey or low sodium cottage cheese with frozen fruit.. awesome sauce.

We adjusted, I took all canola, soy, and hydrogenated oils, sweetteners and brominated oils, processed food shit and threw it right in the trash.
Took LOTS of label reading, still do for hidden fucky faux food. While it means cooking more I tend to do bigger batches and graze when needed.

You could swap the carbs out to starches since the body will convert them.

I like to stick to slower carbs like oats, brown rice, and low carb wheat bread

oats and brown rice FTW!! I got a super easy way recipe for brown rice and veg if you want it, makes great left over fried rice in coconut oil, or by it self.
For bread most around here use canola or soy oil to cut costs and HFCS. We found one called powerseed made locally that used fruit juice instead of sugar of hfcs.

Sure!

I try to avoid coconut oil though, I use olive oil instead, coconut oil does not agree with me.

I also get my fat from cheese and eggs

Congrats on the weight loss :)
Mind if I ask what you were before starting to lose?
I've been going through a similar experience myself, trying to get healthier and in to better shape.

The way I see it, if you want to loose fat the process is simple: Burn more calories then you consume.

I was nearly 300lb in 2009. I was working at Walmart at the time assembling bikes/furnitures. Then moved to truck unloading which involved spending 2-3 hours picking up and placing 1500-2000 boxes on a conveyor belt that easily weigh up to 100lbs. A month after starting that I decided to cut back on sweets and nearly eliminated soda in favor of plain water, two things which I practically lived off of (and am still paying the price for). Got down to 215 by 2010. Didn't change any other eating habits, still avoid most vegies and still eat a ton of meat products. Basically was just the increased physical activity and reduced calorie intake. Left walmart and started working at an Amazon.com shipping warehouse 4 years ago. More physical activity, more exercise, had to walk 15-20 miles in a 10 hour shift. Lowest I've reached was 195, but most of the time I sit between 200 and 210. My weight loss has pretty much stopped, being replaced with muscle building instead. Over last summer I had to get new pants and shorts because my old clothing was getting too loose. Gave up cigs last sept, so will have to see how that plays out this year.

Now, weight loss can come with side effects.
I was doing fine for a few years, then in 2012 I started having groin pains. Eventually got so bad it was effecting my ability to work so went to the doctor. I had a hernia on the right side of my groin. Explained the weight loss and he told me the rapid weight loss could have resulted in the hernia. Looking online, it seems like a common cause of hernias. You loose the layer of fat and now more stress is being placed on the abdominal muscles, which may not be up to the somewhat sudden task of holding everything in. Got it fixed, then 2 months later had a hernia on the left side of my groin. Possibly fixing the one caused the other, the right side was weaker so happened first. Just something to watch out for.

Another side effect (which could be good or bad) is the increased energy resulting from the weight loss. MY ADHD and hyper activity results in me being energetic. Lost weight, lost fat, became more energetic. More energetic meant not being able to get as much sleep some days. It actually got to the point that I couldn't sleep well unless I worked my ass off to use up that excess energy. I still have issues with sleeping, but not nearly as much as I used to.

Last year I tried to get back into bicycling to further the weight loss, but failed.
Will be trying it again this year, hopefully will work out better with the lack of smoking.

There were plenty that were less then a quarter of the price.
Just be a matter of getting into the habit of using it in the mornings before work.

It will arrive on Thursday, which is the first day of my 'weekend' so I'll have plenty of time to play with it.

Nope breville is rock solid.. like super solid.
That juice recipe I posted is what I use as my move juice, helps cuts the inflamation.

too bad no one has a carrot flavoring.. :9

That is a monster.. the fiber catch is helpful as hell.
here is a juice I put down on a regular basis.
4 good sized carrots.
1/2 pear
1/2 a green apple
thumb length chunk of ginger.

you can also use it to make some very tasty bases for stock also.

i like this BN, will have to try it soon :)

I was 251 when I started. 148 now (i am 5ft 7in)

Yes weight loss is simple:

Calorie intake < calorie expended = loss

I have always had insomnia so sleeping good has never really been something i have never really experienced.

Right now i am almost nervous to lose much more on the scale. But im estimating i am at 18% body fat. I still want to burn more fat but dont want to be much lighter.

finding that line of fat loss vs. muscle and soft tissue loss is the key.
When I was body building 2.5 grams of protein per lb of body weight was not unheard of. Little or no fats no carbs.. pretty much the keto style diet.

If you have not look into paeleo to shock the system a bit and do a cycle of it.

When I very first started i only counted carbs and protein, i tried to keep carbs under 30gr and protein 1gr per lb of lean body mass.

I ran quick calorie calculations and i would be ok doing that for a whole, but when my loss stalled after losing a bunch, i recalculated and realized my body weight was low enough to catch my caloric deficit. So I decided to download myfitnesspal on my phone and start adding carbs back in.

Carbs, some fats and mono saturated oils, and medium chain triglycrides are absolutely needed for proper body function.
Honestly the key is balance, I have yet to meet a vegan or someone on atkins that was not 100% batshit.

Same here. And I find the whole belief of it hypocritical. Nope, can't eat animal products. But turn a complete blind eye to all the animals that were killed to deliver that organic soy burger to the grocery store shelf, and all the animals that died in the process of producing every item you use in your life. So whats the point?

The human species evolved as omnivores.

Congrats on the weight loss.
I need some inspiration.
I have gained weight since vaping. Yes, I said it. Weight gain!

Snap, I've gained weight since vaping too, but for me it's more that I've just stopped smoking. I think it gave me an excuse to be a pig lol. Way too much chocolate ended up in my trolley.

And wow, great weight loss OP & BigNasty.

I'd be happy to lose about 10 kilos, sorry not sure what that is in pounds. Ah google, 22 pounds.

Maybe different people have different body types. I can lose fat without building muscle, but at the same time, why not make some muscular gains?

I've lost weight since quitting smoking. Also have dry skin and numerous itchy red spots. Wondering if my smoking had my immune system in overdrive thus suppressing underlying conditions.

That's not correct.

First of all: You don't "lose fat by building it into muscle." You lose fat by losing fat. You build muscle by building muscle. They are separate processes and nearly independent from one another. You lose fat by converting it into energy via an aerobic process. You build muscle by challenging your muscles and "feeding" them energy, and it's an anaerobic process.

One can lose fat and gain muscle at the same time, but, because fat burning necessarily involves expending some of the same energy that muscles require for building (no exercise is entirely aerobic or anaerobic), it can be challenging to do both at the same time, and, as you come closer to your goal, that can become increasingly so. OTOH: Muscle consumes energy even while at rest, so more muscle means more fat-burning--even while you're sleeping.

After doing combined whole-body weight training plus aerobic cardio three times a week, for years, I changed-up to focused weight training three times a week and high-intensity interval training (cardio) on separate days. I've found that to be much more effective for gaining muscle, improving my endurance and losing fat than my prior regimen.

In any event: You can certainly lose fat without gaining muscle. And you can certainly gain muscle without losing fat.

Lastly: You cannot out-exercise a bad diet.

Here's a neat summary of the whole fat-burning/muscle-gaining thing: Gain Muscle and Lose Fat At The Same Time!

That's weird, because, for most people, just the opposite happens. It did to me. In fact: One reason I took up vaping was to get myself off the constant grazing I'd been doing ever since quitting smoking 5-1/2 years ago. (It's working, too.)

Yeah I know. I'm actually not as hungry as before. I am drinking more water and taking vitamins so maybe that has something to do with it, idk.

Drinking water certainly can kill hunger cravings, and when you are trying to lose fat, it's a good idea to drink more water. MAybe your food cravings had to do with vitamin deficiency?

Just what I've heard, I'm no scientist.
