Hi Jimi,
As we approach the end of Spring and flowers all across the globe are blooming, you may have noticed a rise in seasonal allergies...
Itchy eyes, hay fever, and even respiratory conditions. When I was a kid I had terrible allergies.
I know my dad still struggles with seasonal allergies to this day.
For me, my immune response seems to have gotten better as I've cleaned up my diet, exercised more, actively found ways to de-stress (like meditation and reading the right books) –
And I also started relying more on herbal support, rather than the over the counter medications I was given as a kid.
Here is a list of herbs that support a wide variety of allergic responses:
REISHI MUSRHOOM
Reishi is known as an immune amphoteric, which means it strengthens and nourishes the immune system, helping it regain its normal self regulatory function.
Reishi can be used in either underactive immune conditions such as cancer or AIDS, or overactive immune conditions such as allergies, as well as autoimmune diseases such as lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, and Crohn's disease. Reishi is also used to treat altitude sickness, insomnia, and ADD/ADHD.
LICORICE ROOT
Like Reishi, Licorice root is also an immune amphoteric. This sweet root is known for its ability to strengthen endocrine function and be used as an anti-animal dander agent, making it useful for those who suffer from animal allergies.
CORDYCEPS MUSHROOMS:
Cordyceps mushroom was once reserved for the royal family of China as a powerful tonic to the blood, kidneys and lungs. Cordyceps is an adaptogen, immune amphoteric and kidney restorative used to enhance performance, stimulate endocrine function, reduce fatigue and calm the nerves. Cordyceps is also used for loss of libido, infertility, asthma, chronic cough, allergies and autoimmune diseases.
TURMERIC:
Turmeric is a natural immune regulator and a powerful anti-inflammatory agent. Some researchers suggest that it also inhibits histamine release and stabilizes mast cells which down regulates allergic response. Turmeric has shown in human and animal models to help relieve rheumatoid arthritis, psoriasis, IBD and MS.
ECHINACEA:
Echinacea root and flowers are one of the most commonly used herbs on the market. The medicinal parts of this herb reduce mucous membrane inflammation in the upper respiratory tract and have antihistamine activity. Echinacea is also used for viral or bacterial infections such as flu, cold, bronchitis, sinusitis, tonsillitis, and laryngitis. Additionally, several studies indicate that he can help prevent, treat or shorten the duration of viral illnesses.
BAYBERRY:
Bayberry bark has long been used by native Americans and later by eclectic practitioners for excessive mucus discharges. Bayberry reduces excess sinus secretions and has anti-inflammatory properties. This makes bayberry useful for post nasal drip, head cold, excess bronchial phlegm, diarrhea, gastric bleeding, periodontal disease and leaky gut syndrome.
EYEBRIGHT:
Its name says it all. Eyebright herb is known for its ability to soothe itchy, scratchy red eyes, and stabilizes the mass cells, reducing histamine response. Additionally, eyebright is also used to relieve the eyes from excess mucus and prevention for cataracts.
KUDZU:
Kudzu is commonly known as an aggressive weed that has taken much over the southern United States. The root of this weed is packed with medicinal properties including anti-histamine activity. Kudzu is effective in reducing sinus congestion and helping to control allergic rhinitis.
BLUEBERRY:
Blueberries are antioxidative and anti-inflammatory, reducing inflammation and histamine release, making it useful for treating allergies. Blueberries are also known for increasing circulation to the capillaries of the eyes, which results in improved eyesight, reduces oxidation in the tissues, and is useful for helping prevent diabetic retinopathy and night blindness.
ELDERBERRY:
Like blueberries, elderberry strengthens capillaries and increases circulation to the eyes. Elderberry also reduces histamine production, and mucosal inflammation, thus making it useful in allergies that make the eyes itchy and inflamed.
To a healing future,
Rob
