the first time I used this I was a bit thrown off by the smell and used it in place of caps custard. I think you know how that went lol. was totally disappointed. didnt vape it again for months. I decided I would try it standalone one day. oh man so good ! now its one of my favorite flavors. that little lemon hint is just right for me. I am not much into lemon vapes but fa custard and some fa lemon sicily is just right.

FA custard is one of my favorite flavors that they offer , as a chef I prefer the taste of real custard, I'm also a sucker for fruity capes.

I like it in the 1-2% range with some meringe and a touch of fruit. No need to add sweetener.

Thanks for these notes HIC! I made it into a grapefruit gelato with your recommended percentages. Right off the bat, the grapefruit taste was perfect and after 2 days, the custard is really starting to come through.

I've been going berserk on this flavor recently. I use it mainly as a standalone at 5.5%, but I also add to it .5-1% Citrus Mix. The Citrus Mix doesn't standout out at all, but rather accentuates the citrus element of the Custard. It's just awesome. I can't believe this flavor didn't work for me in the beginning -- sometimes my palate lies to me.

Wheres a good US base site to get this custard without ordering from FA direct? I see that one stop DYI shop does not carry this custard.

Have not developed a taste for it as a standalone yet. If I add some vanilla to it the flavor gets better for me. When I mix a mistake doing a V.C recipe, I add a bit of FA custard & the mix is greatly improved.

I like the FA sour note that doesn't exist in american ones.
FA custard is my favorite custard and is a base for many of my recipes, just wish it was a bit more concentrated.

The sour note as a standalone is what I'm not used to. Will search for recipes that call for custard in the mix.

I just got FA custard and it has a lemon note witch isn't bad but it does not have that custard that I am used too. I have mixed it with Vanilla and its a bit better. I do think that one needs real steeping for a few weeks to be good.

I agree with the strong lemon note & the lack of custard flavor.

Haven't tried the FA, but The Flavor Apprentice Vanilla Custard is my all time favorite DIY flavor. It is great all by itself and mixes well with everything. I like to add a bit of cinnamon and Pomegranate, and it works well with raspberry. The TFA French Vanilla Cream, Vanilla Swirl and Vanilla Cupcake flavorings are also all very good. Just be aware of the warnings regarding the use of flavorings containing custard notes. Personally, I take an informed "risk" considering I ignored the warnings on the cigarette packs. The TFA Vanilla Bean Gelato is different but still pretty good and has the custard notes removed.

I have yet to figure the correct % to mix using TFA V.C.

Bumping this one for the great notes (as always) from HIC. Inspired me to break out the FA Custard that I couldn't remember why I ordered.

Mixed it up standalone at 4% to get a feel for it. Vaped it fresh in a 0.2 ohm RDA and the first hit was a little "ew, what's this?". The second hit was "wait, this is unlike anything I've vaped before". The third hit was like "I still don't know exactly what's going on here but I'm going to chain vape this entire 5ml in hopes I figure it out." I'm a fan! I think this setup (mutationX and triple parallel 28ga duals on a SMPL mech mod) probably morphed a delicate, layered flavor into something much different. It's still really good though.

No, it's nothing like anyone else's American Vanilla Custard (that I've tried). I could see FA Custard @ 2% with about 1% each of Vanilla Bourbon and Vanilla Classic being better though IMHO. I didn't get much lemon out of it yet but my experiments thus far only total 1 min of mixing and 10 min of vaping. Gots lots more work to do!

It's not as creamy as I expected but that might come out more with time? Fresh @ 4% (and at high wattage) it's a little edgy, dark and inviting. Because those words totally give anyone other than me an idea of what it tastes like.

I can see it going well with bright fresh fruits like HIC's gelato combos but I think I might try it with other darker flavors first. Fig? Oakwood? Forest Mix? Maybe Oba Oba even though I haven't tried it yet (don't remember why I ordered that one either but I'm absolutely positive it's HIC's fault).

Need to mix more and vape faster!!!!

The main point of this rambly non-sensical post is THANK YOU @HeadInClouds for your supremely helpful notes. You win the vape forum internet, forever.

FA Custard: 2-5% standalone, but usually used in lower percents as an ingredient

If you are looking for an American vanilla pudding flavor, you should also read about FA's Vienna Cream, Catalan Cream, and all three FA Vanilla flavors.

FA Custard is a true basic custard flavor, not goopy vanilla pudding. Custard is made by cooking egg yolks, sugar, milk/cream, a little vanilla, and often a little lemon zest, into a thickened cream. FlavourArt is an Italian company, so they've included the light vanilla and lemon zest flavor as an Italian chef likely would. This is a bright, sweet, lightly creamy flavor.

So what to do with it? Some people enjoy it plain, anywhere from 2-5%, for the authentic flavor of real homemade custard (which does not taste like Jello instant vanilla pudding). Italians include custard in lots of desserts, so I take my ideas from real recipes. Here are my main uses:

Pour Custard over your favorite fruits. If you enjoy vaping fresh fruit flavors, you need this flavor. It works perfectly with all of FA's fruit flavors to add sweet, creamy, bright flavor. Try your favorite fruit(s) with a hint of (1%) Custard for the simplest Italian dessert.

Gelato is Italian, egg-based ice cream that begins with a cooked custard. Simply adding FA Custard to your favorite FA fresh fruit flavors will give you authentic Italian gelato flavor. 4% Grapefruit with 1% Custard makes grapefruit gelato, for example; 1% Bilberry with 2-3% Custard is bilberry gelato. The stronger the fruit flavor is, the higher the ratio of Custard to fruit. I haven't found an FA fruit flavor that doesn't taste GREAT as gelato.

Custard is not just for Italian desserts. If a (real food) recipe begins with egg yolks, milk/cream, and sugar stirred together over heat, then the vape equivalent needs FA Custard flavor. You'll find it's the beginning of many cooked candies, ice cream, cakes, pies/tarts, and numerous other (real) European and American dessert recipes.

A little FA Custard adds bright sweetness that also complements deeper, bolder flavors - like chocolate, butterscotch, caramel, maple, tobaccos (!), rum, and nuts. Whether you're working on chocolate-rum mousse, butterscotch pudding, or even a smoother/brighter tobacco - any time you need bright-sweet-creaminess - FA Custard is one to try.
So funny. This is one of the first flavor notes I ever read. Someone had cut and pasted it and I thought this guy knows his shit. I made a bottle of grapefruit gelato and still love it. Actually, I'm Vaping it right now. Can't wait to get my flavors and make all your recipes I have bookmarked.

I have the same problem. I just received my first ever FA purchase, 10 different flavours from Mama J's. I cracked open the Custard and started adding drops to some pg/vg/nic I had ready and waiting.

The bottle says 33 drops per ml so I blindly started dropping out of excitement. I poured 5ml of my mix into a measuring cup and dropped 2 times 33 drops. Then I checked and I was up to about 7.5ml, So I did some quick math in my head and thought wtf is going on here. I have only put 2/5 of the recommended flavour in and its at 50%.

So I stopped adding of course and put some in my Genie with a 1ohm coil and its pretty rough.

Should it really be mixed at 5% and what's with putting 33 drops per ml on the label?

33 drops per ml sounds to me like 100%. They are trying to help with the conversion from drops to percentage. Its not a suggestion of how many drops per ml to use in your mix. If you do 33 drops of that flavor, it will be approx 1 ml of flavor. If you want to mix it at 1%, you'll want to add it to 99ml of base.

What you really want is 1-2% or 1 drop per 1.5 - 3ml (probably, I'm drunk and math is hard). I'm not sure how many ways (other than nicely) there are to explain it.

Get a calculator. Learn how volume and percentages work. Then get a scale.

I really hope you didn't mix honey the same way. R.I.P. @camjoo

haha no I didn't do any other mixes at that rate.

Thanks for your help. I do remember reading somewhere before about the x amount of drops equalling 1ml. It wasn't on the pages I checked just before mixing so I forgot about it.

I have been mixing ok with just volume measurements using cups and syringes and my dodgy eyes :p

Whew! That's good. Not a problem.

My only regret with DIY was waiting so long to get a scale. And also I went out of my way to buy glass vials so I'm still syringing a lot.

Mixing by volume is awesome. Mixing by weight is way awesomer.

Yeah some scales, a crockpot and an ultra sonic cleaner would be nice. I might see if Santa has any this year.

Nope, skip the UC - the crockpot can be bought for $10....LOL (Actually the UC is really convenient for cleaning atties!)
Exactly. No need for things that heat juice. If you wanna invest in something to mix your juice up, get a reciprocating saw and a Irwin quick clamp. Super glue quick clamp to reciprocating saw blade. Clamp bottle and shake that bottle better in 10 sec than you can by hand in 24 hr.

Actually.... Huck and I were part of a blind taste test group over at the other place. Crockpot at 150 degreees, vs UC, vs nothing. Results indicated that heat was an important factor :) That said I rarely steep, although I do if Caps custard is involved or tobacco (which I rarely use). As for shaking, I just give a quick shake by hand (I guess the max amount I mix at once is in 4 ounce bottles though - ymmv with larger amounts of course).

Crazy. I tried the crock pot method once with strawberry custard and it destroyed the flavor. Never looked back. Now I just mix faster than I can vape so regular steeping isn't an issue.

I take this note from fa "Get hand on a 5 ml dropper bottle, fill it with plain e juice of any given strength, and add 3 drops of any of our flavors. This roughly means 1% of flavor as a drop is more or less 0.02 ml ."
