RY4 Double steep problem

Ry4 D gets harsh when steeped for some reason.

RY4 double really does not require steeping after mixing it is one flavor you can vape after 3 hrs. making.10 % is on the high side % wise. I have tried it at 10 % and it is like you said on the stronger side. I have found not to exceed 7% and tastes great. I have made it 2% (weaker) but very good. I usually make it 4 to 5 % and everyone likes it. Now IM talking about the TFA Brand. Over period of time I have found three day steep 4% works best. I almost always use new coils when changing flavors. Just depends on the how strong the last flavor was and how long since it was changed. I don't add anything it's very good on it's own. If I want to add anything for a flavor change then steeping goes to the flavors that I add if any of them need steeping. As far as lasting I have had it after a year taste great. TFA ry4 double is not a overbearing flavor and in the making of it I never keep the cap off just not needed for that flavor.

Curious did you buy old or did you keep it the two years and that is how it got old?

I have found that certain flavors like Rum or Cognac tend to enhance the RY4D a bit, not so much in strength of flavor, but they tend to round it a bit especially if using FA brown sugar or a touch of molasses.

Both, I bought it from an online vendor and didn't notice the date until I ran out of my other nic stash. It was already 18mos old when I got it, so 6 months later when I used it I found out the off flavors. Couldn't return it of course. That's why its important to look at the date labels on your nic and make sure you didn't get old stock that sat on a shelf gathering dust for a year or so.

Wow, that is why I like wizard they make it per order, Would of thought others would do the same. I know when nic/ pg or vg gets old it will have a peppery smell and flavor that smells like Chinese e liquids I cain't handle that.

yep, he's right. When Nic degrades in PG or VG it acquires a peppery taste.

I taste some licorice first 3 days, 4th day is the first "delicious day" to me and the dark body gets smoother on the 5th imo. I'm new to this one and like it so mixes haven't lasted very long here

I have noyt figured it out yet but I am havine an allergic reaction to RY4D or Acetyl Pyrazine. I am not sure which one it is yet, but now that you post this it maybe the RY4D!

The only way for me to describe it is; I am getting a burned feeling on the roof of my mouth and on some recipes a bad cough as soon as I take a hit.

It is the same kind of feeling I get as when I eat pizza sometimes and the hot cheese will burn the roof of my mouth. Again I am not sure if it is the AP or RY4D? The mixes that this does it on, has both in it and have not narrowed it down any more yet.

I will make up a recipe with Just RYD and no AP and see if it is this for sure and post back.

It is some kind of allergic reaction that I am having and all my juice's are usually well steeped and will only do a small taste test on those that are not. however one recipe was shake and vape and that did it as well.

I would like to get this figured out myself! Perhaps all along it was the RY4D?


My bet was on the AP until now. I think your allergic reaction sounds the same as mine and RY4D was a suspect

Well I'm glad I'm not alone with this bizarre reaction. Yes I get that burning as well after it's well steeped but I use the RY4 Doble straight with nothing else added. I've tried to dilute my stepped mix to 5% with unflavored and still was getting the burn. Today I've tried to dilute it down to only 3% and still getting burn, it just takes little longer to take affect.
When I first started using the RYD I've noticed it has some very sour note in it. Didn't like that but got used to it. The more I'm playing with it, more I think that the sour note might have something to do with the burning feeling. I wish I knew the composition of the flavoring, might find an answer that way.
I do have lot of allergies, there might be something that triggers it there when steeped. Let me know your findings, I'm pretty much at dead end with this problem.

Could just be a bad batch of RY4D too...

Test your VG/PG/Nic in 1ml testers without any flavour

Test your AP in that, if smooth in unflavoured

I taste some of my mixes, although nic burns lol. Toothpick can limit that

Also, try adding ACV to the 5% RY4D you have. It can lower the harshness

In my case; which just maybe a coincidence and not related @SpaceCadet.

My nic tested within 3 points using the same base stock. I actually vaped unflavored for a few hours through out the next 2 days the last time this happened to heal my mouth and give the taste buds a rest. Rinsing with warm water and baking soda helped as well.

I drink about a gallon of water a day and always stay hydrated.

I Just put the RY4D and the AP mixes down and no problems since. I do have problems with pg higher than 30%, but not a burning sensation, more of sore throats and canker sores.

I just havn't gone through the trouble of narrowing it down any further yet.

It is kinda like holding a hammer in one hand, and hitting your thumb on the other.....on purpose

Not trying to start another argument but if you leave the lids off your juices for a week you risk contamination with anything in the air. Bakers in Europe don't have to use yeast with their breads I've heard due to the naturally occurring yeast in the air. They are experts with 100s of years experience. Maybe the microbes all die off and taste bad after they eat up whatever they live on in your juice?
What does your juice taste like in SMALL batches the day you make it? It sounds like a very simple recipe so mixing up smaller batches until you figure out whether just typical dispersion works or not might help. Do you have an identical NIC free PG/VG mix or can you make it without the NIC? If you leave the cap off for a week, maybe try using 5-10mg less NIC and not leaving the cap off? That is said by a chemist on this site to break down the nic, so maybe you won't need to steep for so long to get the taste you want without airborne contaminants?

I am pretty new to DIY but I read all of HIC's recipes and they pretty much all say shake and vape! May taste better the 2nd day! He is considered one of the best recipe creators on this site by some so that is maybe why I haven't been caught up in the steeping process. He also uses Vaperstek nic which I don't have so if all of my juice tastes like crap too I may tell a different story next month.

Wonder if you've experimented by adding a bit of Caramel to one of your good tobacco recipes?
Adding some Vanilla?
Or both?

Small amounts like a drop or 2 in 10ml.

They usually get real creamy and sweet.

Or go the other way and add a drop or 2 of Tobacco to your Vanilla Recipes.
I've heard it helps to taste the Vanilla better.

Yes I like to add vanillas to tobaccos and also have added honey. I do not like the caramel at all so that is why I dislike the RY4s I think. To eat caramel I love it - vaping it not so much
