I was fortunate enough to have had a Big Brother from United Way's Big Brothers & Big Sisters program. My big brother one weekend in 1985 rented/traded/barter use of a satellite dish from a friend. He had done so in order that we could watch a live concert. It was the concert where Sting confronted his stalker. Enjoyed and still do enjoy music from The Police & Sting on his own.
Me and my brother also got into a bunch of other stuff that weekend. I wound up in the car shop helping his brother "Boogie". Boogie taught me the basics of using a torch, cutting off radiators and slapping new ones up in and tacking them. The shop had pits for the mechanics to get into under the cars. It was fun helping Boogie, he let me go at it for a while in the second pit. Think I got maybe two cars done to his six. *chuckles*
Being quick at that takes time, experience. Boogie had been doing it for years and likely did it while sleeping. I learned too it was shop policy for radiator repair to drop an old busted radiator out and replace with new one instead of trying to fix the older one.
It just made better sense/cents doing it that way as all they needed to guarantee then really was the welding used to hold a new one in. They could point to the radiator supplier if a new one was bad. In which case the shop settled with the supplier on behalf of the customer. "Uh huh, send us a fresh one the last one numbered [HASH=2184]#xxxxx[/HASH] was bad." The supplier usually complied or gave credit.
Old ones or bad new ones went out for scrap recycling. A service come round to collect them, tossed the shop a few bucks for scrap material. Of course, the service cleared profit in that it gathered scrap from a lot of shops and got paid for it from the recycle/junk yard.
Once my big brother caught on though, he had to drag me out of the shop. Oh he railed at Boogie, his own little brother. Boogie just chuckled. "Well, he asked what I was doing. I showed him, he got it and off he went." Later on I wound up on the roof of that shop tarring it in a hot as hell Summer. *chuckles* Worth it for a few bucks.
