It is easy because of the sheer size of the Catholic Church....and yes, there have been many instances of coverups and safe havening. Fortunately Pope Francis is all too aware, and is taking a proactive stand regarding this atrocities. What does encourage me to believe that most people are ignorant is the fact that this is not a Catholic issue exclusively....there are MORE instances yet to be brought to light of protestant clergy doing the very same sick things....but again, there is no centralisation of the various protestant denoms....so since there is no place to put the blame but the individual...it does not make the news. But since there is the Vatican, and global Archdiocese....we make for better news stories. To use your words...only an idiot would believe that this is restricted to the Catholic faith.
