Question with making own e juice.

Hey everyone. I'm looking to start making my own e juice to save money, I have one question and it's about the nicotine that I should buy. What pg/VG ratio is best for juice to have the best flavor also what mg strength should I get, my e liquid is always 6mg nic when I buy at the shop.

PG/VG ratio doesn't matter for taste. Some claim higher VG juice needs more flavoring, but I humbly disagree. As for nicotine strength, remember, the higher the concentration, the cheaper the nic. If you feel comfortable with 100mg/ml nicotine, by all means, use it. If you're squeamish about the high concentration, go lower.

I'm about to place an order tonight for everything. What size bottles of pg and VG would last a few months, is 250 ml of each good. I'll be laid off work for 3 months so I'm trying to stock up now so I can make my own for that period of time.

Just calculate how many 30 ml bottles of juice you go through in a month! If, say, you vape 50/50 you can just get a bottle of each in the amount you would estimate you will need (does that make sense?)

General consensus is that PG carries flavor better than VG, but doesn't produce clouds as easily. Keep in mind most flavorings are PG-based. I use a PG-based nic solution because it's easier to draw into syringes, but I barely add any plain PG to my DIY juices - I aim for 3.75 mg strength with 10/90 PG/VG ratio - after adding flavorings I end up with 80something% VG juice at 3.something% mg/ml strength.

For you, I'd suggest mixing a base liquid (using a calculator like eJuiceMeUp) at around 6.5 mg - after diluting with flavorings you should be in the 6 mg range - PG/VG ratios really depend on your delivery device and preference much as anything - if you're not sensitive to either medium, I'd go somewhere around 40/60-60/40 for a tank, and from 30/70 to 10/90 for a dripper.

As far as nicotine quality, I've had good luck with VapersTek and Nude Nicotine, bad luck with some unnamed others - if you're not sensitive to harsh flavoring that adds to throat hit you should be fine with any of the frequently-advertised nic base suppliers, I just feel like the taste of my juice should shine, and VT/Nude are the only bases I've found to date that allow that to happen...

Thank you. I just placed an order at myfreedomsmokes and the nic I got was 48mg at 50/50 will that be good ? Or should I change it quick before I head to sleep?

Just so you arent confused...The base nicotine is strength of the nicotine itself....24mg nic you will find you need more of the liquid to reach your nic content than you will a higher base...Always where gloves but also keep in mind the higher the base, the more dangerous it is to get it on your skin.

Make sure you understand the nic amount you put in your juice before hand as well..As a first timer this is extremely important...dont hesitate to ask more questions if needed.

Be sure you use a calculator when you mix - and double check so you get the right amount of nicotine! One that is popular is ejuicemeup at http://ejuice.breaktru.com/

Thank you. What is the average percentage of flavoring most use for a 30ml bottle, iv read anywhere from 10% to 20%, I wanted to use a little less if possible to make the flavoring last longer but I don't want to give up good flavor by that also.

It entirely depends on your taste, your setup, and your flavors. I use a lot of Flavor Art, and I think the highest I use in a mix is 9% - many mixes are much less. I use more for TFA and Capella, but never even close to 20% - I think the max is around 13%. (Obviously the percentage stays the same regardless of bottle size!).

I use TFA flavoring, to me it makes the best flavors. Be careful when mixing, 48mg is pretty high for making 6mg. Like the others said, make sure to use the calculator. You want to make your 6mg base (PG, VG, Nicotine) first. That way you can just put your % of base flavoring in the bottle and just add that on top. Depending on your taste the amount of flavoring differs in each flavor. Flavors such as blackberry only need 10-20%, where subtle flavors like vanillas and chocolates need 20-30%. It's all a matter of mixing and trying. My max vg flavors are 75/25. The 25 is flavoring. Just know that when you start using more than one flavor in a recipe that you need to back off on the % of each flavor. Making juice takes a lot of practice. Good luck to you. Btw, I go through 30ml a day, so that's 2,880ml over the course of three months. That is 3/4 of a gallon lol.

You're fine - but to get down to your 6mg strength you'll need to cut at 8 parts of either plain PG or VG to nic solution - what you choose to use is what will mostly affect your final solution thickness.

I plan to start with doing 50/50 or 70/30 pg to VG ratio.

I got everything and made my first bottle of juice last night. I made a 30ml cherry. I used a e juice calculator to find out the exact measurements of each nic,pg,VG etc I needed. It went good but two questions. When everyone talks about cutting the nicotine, did I do it right by just using the e juice making calculator , entering all information and using only what it listed to use? Or do I need to do something with the nicotine prior to starting to mix in general. Also what gauge needle so most use to draw VG out, I only had 18 gauges and it was a pain.

I would make your pg/vg base first. then you just add flavoring and the base in a bottle of juice.

Thank you. So by using only the amount of nicotine from the bottle the calculator says to use, that is the cutting of the nic people refer to?

Yep, just put the target nicotine level in with no flavor to make the pg/vg and nic base.

Thank you for your help. What's the best way to draw the VG up, the 18 gauge needle I have is a pain. I went to cvs and rite aid and both said they don't sell any syringes or needles.

I don't use a needle when drawing VG into a syringe.
I just pour some VG into a small container I use, for VG only.
I buy my VG by the gallon, so I don't think I'd find a large bore needle long enough anyway.

P.S. a farm supply store will carry syringes and needles. You can also seek them out online in many places.
I never thought of that. Thank you theres a tractor supply and a farmers feed store a block from me.

These fit on top of my 236ml plastic bottles that I keep my PG & VG in.
You can dispense from them directly into top of a 12mm syringe, (plunger removed).
I use a 16ga (green), Leur Lock blunt tip needle so they wont "blow off" and make a mess.
Sometimes I heat my VG bottle in some hot water to make it easier to work with.

The needles I got from my TSC were sharp, so be careful.
I had to grind the ends blunt, but they didn't have any 16 (green).
But I use the smaller ones for the flavoring anyway.

Good advice here from Contagion and freemind - farm supply co for the syringes if you don't want to go online, you're mixing right if you're using a calculator, and you might consider making up a big batch of 6mg unflavored juice so you don't have to break out the nic, pg, and VG every time you mix, just measure the amount of pre-mixed base you want and then add flavor.

Thanks for the great advice everyone. I have one last question. I made a few bottles on Sunday night. Iv been steeping them since in a cool dry dark spot.
My question is if the flavor on one of them isn't as strong as I'd like will it work to add a drop or two of the flavor in the juice and shake it good then let it steep, or is it better at this point to add sweetener?

If the flavor isn't strong enough, adding a few drops can help. Depending on what you are making, it may not need to age anyway.

I made one bottle of lemonade on Saturday and Sunday morning I tried it in my RDA and it was amazing. Tasted like lemonade. So because I would be busy with work all week I made more bottles sunday when I had time.
They have no choice but to steep till I need to use one. Is it good to make more than just one or two bottles a time so I'm not mixing every other day? Juice lasts awhile if i remember correctly.
Would breathing do much to a juice if it's going to just be not used for a few weeks till I have to open it to use anyway, if I shake it up everyday to keep it mixed?

Making it ahead isn't a problem at all.

Juice doesn't need to breathe unless it has a flavoring with or cut with and alcohol.

Thank you. You and everyone who posted replies have helped a lot with this. I have been researching making my own juice for awhile and wanted to learn everything I could before I started, it is enjoyable and doesn't take that much time to make a few bottles. The money I'm saving is nice too. How much sweetener do people usually add to a 30 ml bottle just to increase the sweetness and flavor a bit, I don't want to over do it?

I start sweeter at .5%. Yes, a half percent. Go up or down from there.
