My best friend just posted this on my facebook wall, basically to make fun of me/wag a finger.
Now I'm feeling betrayed by both I Fucking Love Science and him. :(

http://www.iflscience.com/health-and-medicine/studies-reveal-health-risks-e-cigarettes

Someone gimme some ammo to fire back at him, QUICK! :D

Ok I read the article. First off no one EVER told me vaping was 'safe" when I started, they all told me it was SAFER but those who were completely honest said there was much research still needed. I, as an American free man with a brain said to myself "safer is better" why not give it a try.

The article had a link that in part showed this...
There are approximately 600 ingredients in cigarettes. When burned, they create more than 7,000 chemicals. At least 69 of these chemicals are known to cause cancer, and many are poisonous.

Many of these chemicals are also found in consumer products, but these products have warning labels. While the public is warned about the danger of the poisons in these products, there is no such warning for the toxins in tobacco smoke.

Here are a few of the chemicals in tobacco smoke, and other places they are found:

  • Acetone – found in nail polish remover
  • Acetic Acid – an ingredient in hair dye
  • Ammonia – a common household cleaner
  • Arsenic – used in rat poison
  • Benzene – found in rubber cement
  • Butane – used in lighter fluid
  • Cadmium – active component in battery acid
  • Carbon Monoxide – released in car exhaust fumes
  • Formaldehyde – embalming fluid
  • Hexamine – found in barbecue lighter fluid
  • Lead – used in batteries
  • Naphthalene – an ingredient in moth balls
  • Methanol – a main component in rocket fuel
  • Nicotine – used as insecticide
  • Tar – material for paving roads
  • Toluene - used to manufacture paint
Your friends article then went on to say that ecig cape contains Formaldehyde, just one of the 15 listed from the 69 in total from cigarettes.

Thank your friend for me for verifying what I was told when I first started gaping. Ecigs seem to be much, much safer IF all they produce less formaldehyde than tobacco and NONE of the other 68 chemicals in tobacco smoke. Seems to me I'm 6,800 times safer vaping.

Hell, Mr Scientist...I live in the 6th largest city in the USA...do you think I'm completely safe even just breathing the air outside with 4 million people driving their cars and running air conditioners etc., etc, etc.?

Crap I could go on forever here, but I hate long posts and this one too long already. So I'll just say Mr. Scientist, I know that vaping probably isn't entirely "safe". But, can't you even admit that 1 (possible) chemical is better than 69 poisons? A good start in the right direction don't you think?

Thanks for replying! Just to be clear my friend didn't write the article, it's from a dorky science website that we both enjoy reading. He knows I just started vaping and wanted to scare me/shame me so he had to share it with me immediately. (we fight like brother and sister, always trying to prove each other wrong, it's kinda our thing)

Also any article that does not site its references is just fueling the fire many studies have to be done by many labs to gain a Statistical probability just because one lab tested it means bull even if there results were Supoosedly accurate who funds that lab?

I don't even bother reading those articles, just a bunch of rhetorical bullshit over and over and over and over again.

its actually a huge website very well known in USA and UK "science community" which is why its so surprising they would put out an article full of speculation and little to no science with the headline "studies reveal health risks in ecigs".. rings of propaganda to me

go read the comments on the original post on facebook.. we arent alone in calling out the bullshit

it is suspected of being carcinogenic when inhaled
Recent studies have shown that they still contain tiny particles that can irritate lung tissue and could cause disease.

not very scientific

I did. Sadly, it's mostly people tagging their friends in a "See? Told you!" kinda way. Goddammit.

yea i meant the ones getting all the likes lol those are the only comments people read anyway

it's so split like this because its either someone who hasnt tried it because they are so emotionally attached to cigs they are scared to give them up so they remain uneducated or they are people like us that have tried them and seen (or rather felt) the light

I realize it wasn't your friend which is why I addressed my questions to Mr. Scientist.:) Having good, intelligent, informed, friendly debate is a good thing so I'm glad you have friends like that and that he's concerned with your health and well being.

I'll admit I'm tired of the BS coming from either the pro tobacco side, the anti-vaping side, and mostly from the I Know What's Best For You and You're Too Stupid To Run Your Own Life (please see the list under Washington DC or 1000+ idiots on Capitol Hill) crowd.

To keep my lungs safer I'd have to choose to put neither tobacco or ejuice in my lungs. I liked smoking, now I like vaping and even more than I did smoking for several reasons and it being safer than cancer sticks is on the top 10 list of those reasons.

So, Mr. Scientist, life is not safe and it's up to me where I choose to be completely safe or roll the dice and take my chances, not you. Did you, Mr. Scientist after writing this article, drive to the bar, have a few drinks then drive home? Life is NOT safe, we all decide and should be able to decide what we want and don't want to do and hopefully will use our limited grey matter when deciding.

One thing for sure, politicians, the supposed "educated class", FDA, EPA, HHS, and other self anointed busy bodies can't make any better decision for you than you can. To all of the above listed busy bodies...KMA and I'll vape away. :D

Another toooo long post brought to you by Vapo the Soap Box Master.

this was posted in the comments on the story and pretty much sums it up

Headline: Studies Reveal Health Risks of E-Cigarettes.

Conclusion: We don't have enough information to determine whether E-Cigarettes pose any health risks.

Can you get any more sensationalized IFLS? At this point the topic is pure yellow journalism. How about you try this again when there's an actual story to report?

This is what happens when people "think" they know something without investigating and therefore mistakenly use bullshit, fear mongering and straw men as a substitute for cognitive reasoning and truth.

See now this sums it up very nicely. I get all ticked off at these clowns and have to write a book in reply. That post summed it up nicely. Touche'

I don't care who is spewing propaganda/misinformation...it could be my own brother, I will never trust any source till I do my very own independent research which I have been for almost 6 years and no diseases due to vaping and I was one of those who vaped ejuice with a very high amount of caffeine back in the day. I am still alive and my blood work always comes back healthy period.

Myself and another good online friend of mine that vapes replied to my bestie's post giving actual facts (many tidbits from replies here, thanks all!), and wondering why IFLS didn't have any sources listed in the article, and basically what a complete fail the whole thing is.
My friend's only reply so far was, "I've yet to catch them [IFLS] being wrong."

My latest reply was wondering why my friends barely blinked when I was smoking actual cigs, but are now questioning my choice and/or giving me shit over my choice to vape. Seriously, what IS that? I'm talking about non-smokers too.
PS if anyone wants to add me on Facebook, please do! I need all the vaping friends I can get.

To quote your friend " I've yet to catch them being wrong", translated I think they're usually right so they must be right this time because they agree with me. And to those who didn't blink about you smoking but play chicken little over vaping it's called fear and ignorance nothing more scary as fear of the unknown and everyone has an opinion wether it's an informed one or not so we end up having to swim thru the BS.
