Got two samsungs out of an old camcorder battery-safe?

hi people, after realising a lot of devices use 18650s, I had a old fashioned camcorder I will never use. I popped the battery case open carefully, so the can go back in if need be, but they read :ICR18650-18 SAMSUNG, SD1 282.

Are these safe to charge and use in my device as I do not know the discharge rate, if I can that is a bonus two free batteries!

Short answer,you can use them in a regulated device but I wouldn't recommend them for a mech.

Bondo, I only have a regulated device, no plans to get a mech at the moment. I am replacing this macbooks battery soon (Its got an older style pack that still has 18650's in) so will get a couple from that too . I thought it was a joke at first, but I opened an old camcorder battery and there they were!

you are unlikely to get good performance from old batteries. They already have ?how many? cycles on them? I'm going to guess you are retiring the old battery packs due to diminished performance,

Well they were a christmas present for me in my teens. Old school camera, only got used about 5 times. So thats why I took the batteries out(carefully, I can replace them in the case if need be).

Dont risk your mod with with old batteries...you said you got new samsung 25r's if im not mistaken so just use those in it..Do you know anything other than they are just old batteries?

Yeah I only have one samsung battery though, I just thought maybe these for charging? I have checked them one is dead, the other charges fine.

I was the original owner of the camcorder it was brand new, only used it a few times as a teen, the batteries at maximum has 25 charge cycles. I charged the batteries every few months as it reccommended, but one cell is dead anyway, only one was working.
Apart from that, I just know they are samsungs that say ICR18650-18 SAMSUNG

BTW I will not use them if they are unsafe, I am just charging them, I won't put them in my device unless someone with knowledge says it is OK.

On the weekend I get payed anyway, I was only going to use them for the few days while my 25r charges untill 2 more turn up as I am placing a nice order on the weekend that should turn up on tuesday, so even if they were used it would only be for the 3-4 hours while my 25r charges until tuesday so I can vape. ( They are only about £11 for two of them)

Icr cells were used for awhile in vape mods until people figured out that imr cells are safer.
if it holds a charge it should be fine to use.
is it the purple wrapped samsung icr?

Also fwiw, icr cells are always protected while imr cells are only protected if specified.

No, I believe they are older than this, around 2004 or so, It is a light green wrapper. Not the dark green they do now, but a light green.

Looking at the sticker, because there is no spacing it says EA1 T914A, so I am not sure if this is 14 or 4 amp. Think I will just wait till the weekend to know I am safe with real samsung 25r's.

The samsung writing says ICR18650-18, SAMSUNG, SD1282. I wonder if the 18 means somehing after the 18650?

I don't think I would trust a batt that's been unused for 10+ years.

The Samsung ICR series maxes out at 2C discharge. That means you multiply the mAh rating by 2 to get max discharge amps. These are 1800mAh batteries, so 2x1800 is 3600mA or 3.6A maximum. That's very little, about 10W if you're really pushing them to their limit (which I wouldn't recommend, see below).

On top of that they're only 1800mAh, so that means they won't last long at all especially since pushing them to their limit you won't get the full 1800mAh.

For the final nail on the coffin, as others have mentioned they're ICR chemistry so they're much more dangerous. Theoretically if you are very careful with them and only use them in a regulated device and don't push them to their limit it wouldn't be totally unreasonable to use them but given the other problems above I would say it's not worth it...

Ok thanks bondo and jon@LiionWholeSale, I will just wait for the real samsungs to arrive when I order some on saturday.

I am in the UK, I see sets on ebay for about £11, is there many fakes floating around? If there is, I will buy from a vape shop (They are only £5.99 at my normal shop, but they are out of stock so I need to buy them elsewhere).

Vape shop it is then. Have to use a different one to usual, but theres some good ones to choose from.

Baking soda or chemical fire retardant.
Trust me get a battery to vent lithium cells and put water on it is beyond fucking stupid. A special person at work did that with a cellphone battery and he had to explain to the boss why the store had to be cleared, the fire department showed up and why the new tile in the backroom had a 6 foot scorch mark on it.

That's actually a different battery as well, that's the 2600mAh version, the 1800mAh version has lower limits because the discharge is proportional to the mAh.

Baking soda is good, no need unless you are mixing and matching low amp batteries.
Besides baking soda is multipurpose.
