Vaping Safe?

Hi there! I haven't started vaping yet but wanted to ask people if a specific type of vaping is safe. I'm talking about creating my own e-juice with 80% glycerine and 20% water for a vape pen. So is this combination safe for my lungs? If not, then what is the safest way to vape with no nicotine or diacetyl but still with a flavor?

Water won't work for E-juice, The coils won't work with water, I'll move this to DIY section where you can get some pointers

Really? how about distilled water? I was watching some video where it was 80 glycerine and 20 water to make a base e juice for a vape pen...

@Whiskey Not necessarily tap or spring water, but can't you thin out VG with deionized water?

Yes I heard you can use distilled water, but maybe someone who knows about mixing better than I do will come along and help you out!! Welcome to VU:)

You can use distilled water, but I don't think I'd go higher than 10%. Someone that uses max VG would be able to help you better with that. I'm high PG. It just seems to me that 20% would make your mix toooo thin, and possibly cause leaking, which you don't want.

Is it safe? More than likely.

Is it a good idea? Probably not.

Hi @Alcapwn1999 - you may have heard of people using distilled water in small percentages to thin out vegetable glycerin - this is generally only for people who have a sensitivity to propylene glycol, which is what most of us use as both a thinner and a flavor-carrying agent.

When you say "vape pen" I'm thinking you're probably referring to an eGo battery (about the size of a Sharpie) with a tank of the same size. For something like that, 50/50 on the PG/VG is probably a good place to start, unless you know you're PG-sensitive. In that case I'll wait for someone else to chime in on using distilled water, but I don't think you want 20% - you want to avoid rust forming on your coils, which could lead to the inhalation of all sorts of other nasties.

There are lots of diketone-free flavoring options available, most cater more to the fruity vapers than the cream/dessert types. It's still possible to make most recipes without the "bad" flavors - Flavour Art, for instance, has a whole line of vape-safe flavorings that they've tested free of any of the substances currently on health-minded vapers' watch lists. I'd check out Bull City Vapor or another vendor of your choice for supplies to get started - I like BCV because they have warnings prominently posted on flavors known to contain diketones. Unfortunately it's not a complete list and some baddies slip through without the warnings due to the dishonesty/ineptness of certain flavor extract companies (Flavor West comes to mind).

Hope this helps, and good luck!

I use VG and VG nicotine base, currently thinned about 15% with water. Nothing has ever rusted, and I get no leaks.
I used to use 20% water, but the VG I've been getting seems a little thinner than it used to - could be due to warmer weather!

Why does it bother me when I hear that someone who never smoked is looking to start vaping? They don't understand that vaping makes NO SENSE to anyone but ex smokers. The only way we can POSSIBLY justify this "money pit" of a hobby is because "it's money that I would have spent on cigarettes if I was still smoking"...LOL Expensive way to be trendy and look cool and blowing clouds won't get you nearly as many chicks as you might think...LOL Regardless, I don't judge. Rather have you vaping than starting to smoke any day. Good luck :)

And I stand corrected on the water thing...

Maybe because a majority of the ones that state that, are wanting to try it because they think it's "cool" or their mommies and daddies aren't paying attention to what Junior is watching on Utube

Well, I'm 62 and never smoked except for a cigar when I golf. My 18 year old son got me started and now I'm a mixing fool. Love creating new and unique flavors that mostly impress my son and his friends. I never mix with nicotine, just love the flavors. I have over 250 flavors...mostly FA. This has become a great hobby for me. Not sure why you have to be a smoker to vape. As an added benefit, my teenage son actually talks to his old man and seems interested in what I have to say...that's a first! This forum has greatly my knowledge of mixing and I'm very grateful for all the great contributors here.

My point was that as ex smokers, we celebrate this as harm reduction and "safer than cigarettes". But if you don't think that there will be SOMETHING down the line, you're simply kidding yourself. Just because it doesn't have nic in it, you're still inhaling foreign substances into your lungs and putting powerful batteries next to your face. Is it safer than smoking? Sure it is. There's no way it CAN'T be...but you are still putting yourself at risk for whatever side effects there may or may not be. At 62, maybe that's an acceptable risk that you really see nothing wrong with. My post was not really aimed at your particular demographic. It was aimed at the younger "monkey see clouds, monkey must blow clouds" crowd.
