New to DIY

Hi guys,

First post here so be nice and I did try to search the forum first!
I'm new to DIY but not vaping and have run into a pretty major hurdle already!
I normally vape 80vg/20pg 3-6mg vendor juices so figured this would be the ratio I'd try.. I used a calculator and I'm 100% sure that I calculated correctly and have tried 10+ times now but no matter what recipe I use (been trying out HICs recipes!) they all come out unbelievably harsh. I mean chest tightening kick in the nuts harsh..

Have I got a dodgy batch of 1 of my ingredients? I've seen people say that they've struggled to get their VG up a syringe, well mine flows like piss! It's definitely thicker than the PG but it's nowhere near as thick as some of the 80/20 vendor juices I've bought even as pure VG? Could this be the reason for the stamp in the throat? I bought it off Amazon and has hundreds of good ratings but it could be dodgy batch?

Or is it more likely to be my nicotine?

I've attached a screenshot of the most basic recipe that I tried to show my base %'s.

Cheers guys,
Sam

What brands of fluids are you using, as far as pg, vg, and nic?

And what type of device are you vaping with?

I've tried 3 tanks: Atlantis 2, Artic, Subtank, an RBA (Billow v2) and 2 different RDA's!

Tried them on a Sigelli 75w at various power and a SX Mini at various power and it's exactly the same result.

I used to vape at 24mg through my nautilus so I can handle a throat whack but this is something else and it's so weird as I've only been making it 3mgs..?

Hmm yeah that is strange never really paid any attention to it as all the reviews said they were using it for e-juice.

Yea it's like an orangey colour? Is this normal? I've just poured some into a clear bottle to take a photo of it (normally stored in container in cool/dark place but only had it under a week anyway!)

A quick google says your pg is the right stuff:
http://allaboute-cigarettes.proboards.com/thread/38207/pg-mpg

However, it's possible that your nic or VG are not good. Have you tried tasting the VG? It should just taste slightly sweet. Otherwise it might be bad nic (or highly oxidized nic)? (Your nic is a horrible color - very oxdized - I'd send it back if you can, or buy from someone else).

That nic looks highly oxidized and will pack a punch if it is. Sorry, after reading that link I posted, it just didn't sound good to me using the mpg for vaping.

Ah thanks for the link Amanda was starting to get worried then!!

Ah I had no idea what colour it was supposed to be so presumed it was normal! Would it really be that strong just because it's been oxidised at such a small volume as 3mg?

Am I right in thinking VG should almost stick to the bottle though? I mean if I slightly tilt it the whole lot flows to the other end. It does taste sweetish though..

Not having much like with this DIY malarkey

What kind of syringes?? if its just a pretty standard size and its flowing like piss that's a tid concerning....your VG should be waaaaaay thicker than your 80/20 juices before diluted.

Vg is normally very thick, yes. And the darker yellow the nicotine is, the harsher it is. No magic links, just experience.

Try mixing it unflavored. See how that vapes.
It could also be the lemon. My throat can't do citrus vapes.
You could vape the VG by itself, to see if its bad.
If the VG is ok, add some nic, and test again.
Basically isolate the ingredients, until you find what's causing the harshness.

Just a standard 14 gauge needle with 1 ml syringe and it sucks it up without the slightest problem (I'm a paramedic so pretty used to syringes!)

Yeah it's definitely not much thicker and I would say is actually less than the vendor juices.

Cheers PuffOn will have to give that a go in the morning. I've tried around 12 different FA flavours and it's the same with all so I'll try to isolate the ingredients and see where it gets me!

Thanks for all your help guys, been amazing!

Throw some VG in your rda and vape it straight with new cotton, if its harsh I would start there:)

Somehow it's got to 4am and I've got an exam at 11am so I've really got to put my woes to bed for tonight and give the VG a go in the morning haha! Bloody DIY, wish I'd never attempted it!!!

Will update tomorrow with results!!

There should definitely be some resistance there. It takes me about 10 seconds (depending on room temperature) to fill a 10ml syringe of VG with a 14g needle.

Hi goose. I'm from the UK and ordered my vg nic from the same place ( had to check as I couldn't remember). I have only just started diying my own e liquid to. Was your nic that colour when you got it? As I say mine is from the same place is clear and is thick like it should be. There's no way I would get it into the syringe with a 14g needle with out a struggle I have to use a special one designed for this use. Mine also doesn't have a taste to it and def no punch. If it was that colour when you got it I would email them and see if you can return it as it both looks and sounds like a dodgy batch IMO. what type of bottle did it come in?

I can't believe no one has mentioned this yet as I've only been making my own juice for a few months and I'm sure others here have far more experience. In my own juice making I have always found that I need to use less nicotine than already-made juice I buy from others. For example I vape premium juices at 3mg (.3%) but when I make my own juice I mix it 1-2mg (.1-2%). Also make sure you are calculating the strength of your nicotine correctly. For example mine is 48mg or 4.8%, but there are 10% nics out there as well. I highly recommend the juice calculator as steam-engine.org. Don't be afraid to make mistakes, it takes a little time to learn this stuff.
