Credit card fraud online?

Hi all
I just got a call from my bank that asked me if I made a $1.99 purchase this AM..I said no, I did not...the last purchase was
from SweetVapes, for $15...so my credit card info was compromised online between then and today..somebody tried to see if my stolen number would work..
Bank canceled this card out and will mail a new one out to me within five days...I'm just glad Chase monitors for fraud and notified me of suspicious activity....although it does make me wonder how secure the SweetVapes website is...

You are telling my story right here! I've been battling with my bank for three days now over nearly $250 charged to Google.com for whatever someone has purchased, and I'm furious!
The bank put my money back in Wednesday because the two suspicious transactions were still in the pre-authorization stage. There was also a "test" transaction of $1.12. I went there and filled out papers for "statement of dispute." But yesterday morning, not only did the charges pop back up, they cleared. Then the overdraft charges started popping up, leaving me drastically in the red. Back on the phone with the bank....money finally shows back up today, along with overdraft charges removed, but now I'm afraid to put our paychecks in the bank for fear the charges will run through again. My card was cancelled on Wednesday and I won't have another till next week. This agitates me severely because there are several of our bills that are paid online, and even when I get a new card I'll have to go through a few online entities and change my payment method - AT&T, netflix, hulu, our internet provider, car insurance, you name it....within the past two weeks all online purchases have been made via PayPal except for flavor orders from Wizard Labs and ECX. I am LIVID.

well sweetvapes just may be contacting you ?? when you use a CC ,some CC processors do this little thing called "capture" .basically they hit your card for an extremely small amount ,usually a buck only.until the company actually processes your order and pumps in the info for it

just a heads up
Chase said it wasn't SweetVapes.. My order from SweetVapes was last week, not today...But SweetVapes was the last transaction on my card..just sayin

Wow, I am truly sorry to hear that!
Would changing banks (and cards) be an option?

There are a lot of sites with malicious code planted to skim cc info with the expiration date and cvv number. I've had to replace my card twice due to that crap. Now I only deal with vendors I know, at least reasonably, that are secure. Fasttech is one. Not sure of the other Hong Kong/China based sites.

I hate to change banks, been with them for nearly 10 years, but the card will be replaced by next week. I'm on the bank's website pretty often, which is how I caught it so early. This happened on a smaller scale a couple of years ago, someone had paid their dentist in Texas on my dime and also ordered a horseback riding video (??), but that was refunded to me as well. But I still had to go through the "new card" fiasco....I'd just told someone last night that computers and technology are amazingly handy but they've also created a whole new brand of thieves. Stealing is so much easier now, no one has to go through the trouble of pointing a gun to your head and robbing you, now they can sit at home in their recliners and reap the rewards.

I think there is a rash of this happening in recent days. Very similar to the above stories I am experiencing. Mad a purchase Tuesday for vape gear. Got the call from bank now card shut off. Thus is 4th time in last 15 months. Ugh

I had a similar situation and had to wait for a week for the new card to arrive. However, I went to the bank and they gave me a temporary card, I could use for my online payments.

Well speaking for myself I think when my new card gets here I won't be putting it out there online anytime soon..
I have more mods than I can vape as it is now, and tanks and such could be purchased with cash at my local shop..
I do use a debit card to pay my Verizon bill and Gieco insurance using their websites the last few years with no fraud problems at all. ..but I'll quit ordering vape gear online, at least till this fraud problem clears up...

My mother's bank will make you a new one right there and hand it to you. Mine can't do that, and didn't even offer a temporary. :(

We're thinking of getting one of those you add money to, just for online purchases.

We get things a lot cheaper online, but this is the gamble we pay for it though :(

In the 2 and half years I've been vaping, had my card comprised twice, luckily my bank is pretty good and give me back the funds while they dispute them, but still a hassle getting a new card etc.

After the last time it happened, said I wouldn't use my Debit card anymore, and for a while I used my CC, as only had a $500 limit in it, but then I was using it so much and paying it back off, they thought I was a great customer and raised my limit to $2500, so then felt nervous using that too, but do have a notifier that tells me if anymore than $100 is spent, so do have some alert to if anything happens.

Also got a prepaid card, but the problem with that is, it takes nearly 7 days to get money transferred to it, which doesn't work for a vapor who wants their vape mail yesterday.

Pretty smart to have that $100 alert ..
I'll see if my bank will do that for me maybe.. thx for the reply

This is the exact reason that I don't enter CC/account info online. I'll only use PayPal even though it's far from Completly safe.

My sympathies for those dealing with this bullshit. I lost $2200(and some hair) to online thieves years ago when identity theft was a new thing and banks weren't as forgiving to frauds.

I received a notice from a vendor that their site was compromised 3 mo. previous to them sending notification, that was 6 or 7 mo. ago. During the 3 mo. before receiving the notice I ordered from this vendor twice. About a month ago I went to use my c.c. and it was denied, luckily the cc co. noticed an unusual charge followed by a second one. The first one got through before they caught it and shut it down. What a nightmare to get straightened out and the 2 wk wait for the new card. They need to come up with a safer system.:(

Yeah, the little green padlock in the address bar doesn't always guarantee an encrypted connection, and if there's dishonesty inside the company it doesn't matter anyway.

That padlock icon means bupkiss if the site has been compromised by malware/keystoke logging programs....

I had it happen to me a few months back. Luckily the bank caught all the attempts to charge and stopped my card (I found out when I went to use it at Kmart the next morning). So I went directly to the bank and they attached a cash card to my accounts. 3 bucks a month. Now when I order something I get the total right before the process payment button and then open another window into my bank and transfer the money needed to the cash card account. Then I go back and finish the process payment for the vape supplies. Every transaction has gone thru, it's that quick. All I have to do is keep over 3 bucks in my cash account for the monthly fee.

That's part of what angers me. I do everything in the world to protect myself, but if the other party is compromised by something serious it's all for naught. Guess I need to go the extra mile and just stop online ordering. Had to resort to snail mail and telephone to order the husband's meds from Canada. After doing business with a particular site for three months, I got online to refill his scrips and the site was just gone. I called and questioned it and was told the government didn't like us ordering medication from non-US sites and their IP address had been blocked.
Big brother is always watching....

way's around that crap. I take 2 meds that would cost me over $400 per month, even with fucking insurance since they consider the Rx outside their covered meds. I get mine from Canada at $70/month. The U.S. government is filthy with profiteering scum.

Fer real....one of Chris's inhalers is right at $400 a month, just for one. Still $160 from Canada, but that's better than $400. And the other inhaler here is $53. That same $53 will get him five of them from the Canadian site.

I basically find out how much my order is total first. The. Just add the amount to my Google card and order. That way only exact $ is available for my order. If you add money with a bank account ita free or like 2% with a debit card

Good idea if vendors take it, know some won't take pre-paid cards, so they can be funny on what cards you can use, but set up account and ordered a card last night, so will give it a go.

The funny thing about that is sometimes the meds are from the same manufacture as you would get if you purchased here. Why is that? Greed?

Discover used to have a one time cc number generator that would link to your account. You create the number, give it to the site, it's gets charged once, and the number gets shut down. My wife and I used to use it all the time, then they discontinued the service. Don't know why, because it was great for online purchases. :(

Probably because Discover has a $0 liability for fraud. So why would you need a temporary number now?

My Discover and my Chase card both have zero liability for fraud.

The same thing happen to me last week I ordered the new JoyeTech EVic Mini off Gearbest. Chase Bank called and said someone from China just purchased 57.98 on my credit card in China. They declined the charges and called me to cut up my card. It took 4 days to get a new one. I was so thankful

I've had it happen twice in the past few years. This last time the only thing out of the usual was a purchase from a new to me vendor. I won't mention the name since I don't know for certain they were involved or exploited. My bank caught the fraudulent activity and called so the only thing it actually cost was the time involved getting a new card and changing card info where needed. This time I also got a pre-paid MC that I can limit any damages with. At least with this set up if I have to cancel a card I have a separate one to fall back on until it settles out.

Yes,but the temp cc number also protected other vendors from getting ripped off. The thief could still get the goods and the store gets the shaft. Seemed like a win win type scenario....

Big brother is always watching....

Sign up for a VPN, and big brother has to work for it then. They're cheap now days. You simply set it for another country (ip) and you're right back to ordering online.

I utilize a VPN for most of my CC transactions and all online communication while I'm on my PC. There is way too much censoring going on in the land of the free. The VPN is a means of watching censored news broadcast for me.

I got mine, the problem is, most places are not ready for them yet though, I only got to use the chip at target, everywhere else has the slot for them, but they say they are not working yet.

And the chip makes no difference to online, as your still inputting in the card info, which is what they use.
