First of all, I hope I am posting this in the right place as I normally don't start threads I just infect them.

Lots of wick materials out there and I have tried most of them.

But awhile back, I went on a quest to find the perfect organic wick material.

Very long story cut very short, I finally found Ramie Fiber also known as China Grass.

And here is where you can purchase it if you so desire.

http://www.woolery.com/store/pc/Ramie-Top-8oz-China-Grass-p901.htm#.U-a4hfldW-Y

$15 plus $&H gets you a full 8oz of the product which is one hell of a lot. Consider that organic cotton balls come in a large bag that weighs in at 0.16 oz for about $4.

I do boil and dry mine before using it.

It is easy to work with, kind of like cotton.

The funny thing is that it does not soak up and store liquid like cotton does.

It just wicks like crazy and has an amazing capillary action like nothing I have ever seen before and almost immediately transfers liquid from the grooves on the deck of my Kayfuns and Russians to the coil.

In many cases you can change out flavors by simply emptying the tank and replacing with a new flavor and in the space of a couple of tokes you are getting the new flavor 100%.

Obviously this will not work if your last flavor was cinnamon or something else that was really strong.

Also, it does not have any flavor of its own like hemp fiber and really delivers the flavor as well as the vapor if you are into cloud chasing. And it does not burn as it is heat resistant.

I have been using this exclusively for about 3 months now and I see no reason to use anything else!

IMHO, you should really give this stuff a try.

Good to know rj, thanks for the humble info. How long does a wick last before needing changed?

My concern with buying from ebay was that they said it was bleached. Any idea where we can find raw or ecru version of Ramie fiber?

To answer both questions.

Savage,

An 8oz bag of the stuff is FREAKING HUGE! Enough to knit something out of it if your were so inclined.

As a rule when my Resistance indicator drops by 0.2 ohms it is time for me to dry burn my coil so I just go ahead and replace the wick at the same time.

Truth be told, the wick outlast the coil. And it cost 1/1000 of a fart to replace.

Oddvape,

Great question, I boil mine prior to use so there is nothing to worry about.

Even Organic cotton has been put through some kind of whitening process. Read the small print on the bag.

Here is a picture of how I prepare the Ramie for boiling before use.

Ramie Clamp.jpg

The clamps keep in shape.

You simply take it out of the boiling water and blot it dry and then fully dry in a toaster oven set to warm for about 20 minutes.

That piece you see in the picture is good for a solid two months of wick!

And forget eBay, get it from here!

Like I said, I purchased a full 8oz bag and I will be running out of my 100' spool of Kanthal long, long and long before I run out of the Ramie!

I works really great with micro coils. You just take one end of the wicking material, roll it in your fingers until it is really small and thread the fibers though the coil.

Just like you would do with cotton.

Thanks for the info. I should be getting some of this to try in the pif box that is going around. From your picture, I am assuming that you have to secure it before boiling or you would end up with a mess of loose fibers? Those who advocate NOT boiling probably wouldn't like the metal you are using. But, as pbusardo says, he didn't boil his analogs before smoking them, lol!

You are correct that you need to use a clamp of some type to keep the fibers in a usable form while boiling.

And I do this in a large pot of water and I do not end up with any kind of metallic flavor from using these clamps.

Or any flavor from the fiber itself for that matter which is one of the many reasons that I love the stuff!

Also after you remove it from the boiling water, you can get rid of most of the excess moisture just by blotting it with paper towels. 20 to 30 minutes in a toaster oven at a low setting will dry it out completely and then you just have to give it a bit of a "Fluff" before using it.

Keep in mind that one of the uses for Ramie fiber is to make hot pads to set your hot pots and pans on.

120 deg F is just fine to dry it with!

I use ramie in my kayfuns. Best flavor ever! Not a fan in my rdas though. could be due to me wicking it to large or small. regardless, ramie is nice, and im not going back to cotton in my kayfuns!

Glad you like it in your Kayfuns:D

The reason that it does not work for shit in RDAs is it does not hold/store E-Liquid worth a tinkers damn!

It just wicks like crazy and has to come into direct contact with a continual source of liquid to work.

Tomorrow or the next day, I am going to build an RDA with Ramie in the coils surrounded by cotton to act as a reservoir to see if that works.

It is very seldom that I recommend a product for fellow vapers to spend their hard earned money on.

This is one of the two I have ever recommended.

The first one was the Kanger T-2 clearomizer when it first came out in competition to the CE4 "Stardust" Crap and the ViVi Nova (nothing against the Nova) and I still use them to this day in my stealth vapes.

If you do decide to order it (and you really should) please order it from here..........

Nancy Reid the manager was kind enough to send me samples when I was evaluating this for vaping use.

So please add in the comment section that the strange dude who wanted a sample for this purpose sent you!
